  1. Happy Birthday to a Great Man and a Unique Musician, I haven’t missed the chance to wish you the best for your day here since 2007 and I never will.

Let’s celebrate On An Island listening to it the whole day! 🙂

This album is like the best wine, though. The older it gets the better it becomes.

I hope that you are very fine FEd as well. I’ve been off the blog for a while and reading this post just reminded me of how beautiful it’s always been.

Here in Amsterdam I’m about to have a beer… Cheers David!

I’m so pleased you managed to get your fridge fixed in time, to get a bottle or two chilled, to celebrate your sixty eight.

    Have a great day.

    1. You do have to wonder though, is a part for a fridge the weirdest EVER birthday present? 😀

  38. It’s funny how a stranger can feel like one of the best friends you have ever had. Your voice – your guitar – so familiar to me it feels like a big hug from a dear friend. I have always said that if I ever got the chance to meet you, I would simply just ask you for that big ol’ bear hug.

  39. Another Brick In the Wall was played in honour of David’s birthday today on BBC Radio Cumbria.

  40. Wishing you a very happy birthday, David, “with friends surrounded, the dawn mist glowing, the water flowing, the endless river, forever and ever”!

It’s not the first time, nor will it be the last, to thank you for 40+ years of musical memories and positive energy that have been such an important part of my life. It may sound corny but a day without Gilmour is like a day without sunshine! 🙂

  41. … just caught myself strumming “Lost For Words” on my guitar… What a song…

Thanks for all the fish, err music. 😀

  42. Happy birthday, David and many happy returns! Hope you have a nice day.

I have been listening to and grateful for (Pink Floyd’s) music for 40 years. Now, as a mother, I am bringing Pink Floyd’s music to my two young daughters.

Ironically, yesterday, I just learned to play on acoustic guitar; “Wish You Were Here”. I had never tried to learn it before, I always thought it was far too hard. (Only the basic intro/picking and strumming chords throughout). The part you play, the intricate picking, is something I will do my best to learn, though I have my doubts that I could ever get to that point. But I will try!.

So I am over-joyed, while finding this blog/website today, that it is your birthday today!

For all of your music that you have blessed me with being able to listen to and now bring to my daughters. I hope they, as well, carry it to their children in the future and so on!

*My dream would be to see/listen to you play/sing LIVE one day. That will be MY birthday wish. 😉

    1. So I am over-joyed, while finding this blog/website today, that it is your birthday today!

Isn’t is just a FANTASTIC find Chasey? Visit often – you won’t ever regret it!

    1. I’ll third them … I’m jealous as hell.

Maybe it’s time to get the “Barn Band” back out on the road Fed?

Have you got your spoons polished ?

      1. Spoons, coconuts, wooden block thingy that looks a bit like a gavel… I’m good to go.

  44. Happy Birthday, Sir!

Let two things never leave You – good health and that little crazy thing…

  45. Happy Birthday David. I’ll be putting on On An Island tonight to celebrate.

I had to come back to let you know I just came across your; “First Solo Album Released In May 1978” (on YouTube).

I will enjoy your beautiful songs/voice (from this CD) today especially, in celebration of your birthday!

  47. Happy Birthday David and many happy returns. Enjoy your day with family and friends.

P.S. I was sitting with my wife when Polly’s tweet about the fridge came through…hilariously typical of the parts guy.

  48. Happy Birthday, Sir!

Wish you all the best, and may you enjoy the gift of happiness, because you have been so very generous in kindly sharing your gift with millions of people all these years. Thank you!

  49. Happy birthday David! Four years ago I planted a rather sad looking juniper twig (seedling would be an exaggeration) and today it is lush and growing. When I realized it was David’s birthday I nicknamed it the Gilmour Juniper. It’s thriving. So may he, so may we all.

  50. Just like to join in with everybody else on here to wish DG all the best on his special day and many more to come.

Has it really been 8 years since On an Island? Time is flying by so fast. Or is it just me?

  51. Happy Birthday David Gilmour! Music would not be the same without you.

Where we start…is where we end…So much behind us…Still far to go.

  52. The songs played on Absolute Classic Rock were:

    Shine On (13 minutes!)
    Comfortably Numb and
    On the Turning Away

3 classic guitar solos, usually they play up to 5 tracks but could only fit in 3 but came with comments that ‘If Carlsberg made guitar players they would be David Gilmour’ and why stop at 5 songs when you could easily play 150!

Hope David had a great day and yes, even the Fat Old Sun shone for him!

    Have a great weekend

  53. So, David is 68 and I was born in ’68. I know it means something great!!

Happy birthday David. Enjoy many more, please. Thank you so much for all you do!

  54. Best wishes on your special day David.

Of all the music heard yours holds a very special place for me.

Saw your Dark Side of the Moon concert at Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh, Pa with my future wife!!

  55. By the way, today it’s been 8 years since David Gilmour’s concert at the Mermaid Theatre. Time is flying.

  57. Happy Birthday David.

Thank You Michal for the Comfortably Version. Bravo.

My mutt Lime is 8 years of age also.

My bride and I will eat at our fave Indian restaurant on Saturday for her B. Day! Busy Ides of March.

    Come on Sun!!!!!!!!!!!

  58. I enjoy seeing how many people from around the world respond to the celebration of David’s arrival. He unites people from all over. He has given the world a great gift; his excellent talent with composing beautiful music that lasts not just for our life time but being enjoyed by fans that heard it when the music was first released, their children and future generations to come. That makes him up there with the greats that are still remembered after millenniums. We are fortunate to live at this time and hear one of the greatest musicians creating in our lifetime. David’s Birthday is indeed a reason to celebrate.

  59. I always enjoy how David’s blog site brings so many people around the world together. To see the different languages is wonderful. Music is definitely an universal language and David speaks it well.

  60. Many happy returns.

My gift is a link to information about a new musical I saw last night. Arrabel, filled with heart and soul, a story told through only music and dance. No pesky lyrics to get in the way. See it if and when you get the chance.

  61. I got distracted and forgot what I was going to tell you in the chat room about the Royal Shakespeare Company play I went to see, ‘A Life Of Galileo’. Here is a review and here is where it’s playing next.

I enjoyed it. However, the reason I talked about the play was to tell you, Fed and fellow chat irregulars, about a couple of lines Galileo came out with at the point where he was demonstrating his telescope and describing features of the moon to Sagredo. He referred to “the dark side of the moon”! I’m sure he said it twice.

Of course I thought that was terrific (I had on a Dark Side T-shirt, true, I did!)

I wondered, was it a nod to Star Wars and the “dark side of the force”, because the actor playing Galileo is Ian McDairmid who played Emperor Palpitine in Star Wars, but more than that, a nod to Pink Floyd? I think so.

  62. Dear David, wishing you all the best for a happy and healthy year!

Thanks to all who maintain and contribute to the blog – I enjoy catching up on the interesting conversations. 🙂

Very sorry to hear of Susan’s passing.

    Take Care. CT

  63. A very belated happy birthday to you, David.

I think I might need to re-subscribe or something as I no longer seem to get notified of new blog posts or chat…

    1. There haven’t been any blog-related notifications sent for a while, but you should be receiving reminders of when the chatroom is open. Please check again tomorrow, including any spam folders. The chatroom will be open from 1pm (UK).

    2. If I may be so bold and at the suggestion of dear Michèle, a sort of belated gift birthday gift. I tried to do a decentish scat…..

      My version of Cymbaline.

    3. That’s a very high quality piece of work there Julie.

I can tell that even on my iPad as I sit in the bar of Cinema City waiting to see “Under the Skin”. Scarlett Johansson stalking Glaswegians … Doesn’t get much better than that.

  64. Wishing David a very very Happy Birthday, health and prosperity and may its joy last through the year.

Apologies for the late post but I was under the weather and could not get to a computer. However the date certainly did not go unthought of, celebrating someone who has brought so much musical joy into my and so many others’ lives.

Again, bon anniversaire, tanti auguri, tanta gioia. Hope there was delicious cake. 😛

  65. A little bit belated greeting here, but I wanted to share a little story:

On March 6th 2006 I was travelling around Europe and happened to arrive at Kiruna, the northernmost city in Sweden, 145km north of the polar circle. It was like being in another planet, so still and eerie it was the feeling. Then I got to a lonely motel, where a nice gentleman helped me with the accommodation. Feeling a little warmer and more comfortable, I heard a familiar sound, a voice that sounded like home. It was David Gilmour’s new album, On an Island, being advertised on TV. It felt right.

  66. Went for a drive this morning with DSOTM Live playing. Ended the afternoon with a wonderful thrashing of Man U in the Theatre of Nightmares.
