Orb laser shows

As some of you have been eagerly anticipating, there are to be two exciting launch events for Metallic Spheres, the soon-to-be-released new album from The Orb, which features David Gilmour.

The first is on Friday 24 September – tomorrow – in Ibiza. Café Mambo is the place to be, from 7pm CET, for the inaugural event labelled “The Ambient Spheres Gala”.

Surrounding clubs will carry an audio sync of what’s happening at Café Mambo, complete with a live set by The Orb performing Metallic Spheres in its entirety. Following the performance, there will be a DJ set by The Orb’s Alex Paterson.

See the Café Mambo website for further details.

Should you care to follow online, Ibiza Sonica Radio will be broadcasting live from tomorrow’s launch between 7pm and 9pm CET, so don’t miss that.

Then, on Tuesday 12 October, an original laser show production will take place in Los Angeles. Once more, The Orb will perform Metallic Spheres in full.

As well as lasers, there will be alcohol, which is why it’s strictly for over-21s only.

The venue is the Masonic Lodge at 2244 Westwood Boulevard 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles (that’s the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, CA 90038).

Although The Orb will be in attendance at these events, David will not be.

If you would like to be there on 12 October, however, let me know. Please include your full name and contact telephone number, as well as the number of tickets you require. You can’t change this later, not without giving me a headache at least, so please get it right first time. No personal details will be made public, of course.

Admittance is expected to be free of charge, on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

Metallic Spheres is released on and around 11/12 October, depending on the day that new releases usually reach the shops in your part of the world. See the album’s microsite for more information on the project and, coming shortly, the ticket allocation for the L.A. launch.

Lastly and unfortunately, technical issues are once more affecting David’s website currently, but it will be back online as soon as possible.

  1. Hope techno probs rectified soon. I did have difficulty getting in but here I am.

Love to go to shows but actually planning my wedding and will be on honeymoon then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow!!! Eh, who would have thought it!! Sure David would understand.

Best wishes to all here and of course you FEd.

  2. As well as lasers, there will be alcohol…

Sounds good to me – but I’ll have to settle for listening on the radio.

    Thanks for the link.

  3. Greetings!

I would like to attend the Los Angeles laser show on OCT 12th, and would like to bring 3 friends with me (4 tickets total).

Can’t wait for the album. 🙂

  4. Good news.

No wonder the event for Europe will take place in Ibiza, it’s the perfect place to enjoy top club parties, electronic, dance and ambient music, trance, on form Djs… I remember seeing in Ibiza DJ David Guetta years ago at ‘Pacha Club’. Oh! What a night! Hot! 8)

Very nice to see that the blog (once again) is offering tickets to attend the event in the US. Lucky you, American bloggers!

David won’t be there in L.A. on 12 October? Maybe he has decided to perform that night on top of a wall at Nassau Coliseum – Long Island, NY… 😉

    1. I would love to see Roger do The Wall at Nassau Coliseum. This is the same place where I saw PF play The Wall 30 years ago.

Naturally I’d also love to fly to LA and catch The Orb. Am VERY excited about the upcoming release.

  5. Very exciting!!! Ibiza would be wonderful but too far away and too soon for me.

I would absolutely love tickets to the 12 October event in Los Angeles. I’m located in Northern California and will definitely be there.

I love the underground House music scene and really look forward to experiencing The Orb. 8)

  6. Happy Birthday, Hydrea!

    This is for you. 😛

And Happy Birthday to Thomas. 🙂

Are you Thomas with the Wireman tattoo that we can see in the blog gallery?

    1. Yesterday it was my Best Birthday in all my life because I had around me only Love and Harmony.

So, don’t worry, I’ll be back soon in Blog with good news…

Thanks Michèle!! Oh yes, you know I love Hello Kitty :)) And Thanks FEd for your wishes. I had a great joy when I saw it. 🙂

      See you soon… I promise.

      Bye, Hydrea

  7. I definitely can’t get to LA, but could possibly get to Ibiza at a push. It does sound like a good excuse to spend some time on a beach!

If I can’t be there, I’ll tune in. Thanks for the link.

I hope they both go well and everyone enjoys the occasion.

  8. OK, I haven’t gotten my head round the mechanics of this…

How do the Orb play this live without David? Will his guitar be on tape and they will play instruments?

I’d love to be in Ibiza this evening. 😀 Just to be somewhere warm and sunnier than Britain, if for no other reason!

I’d love to go to LA, should be quite an event, and fabulous that it will be free! Good show The Orb!

Another thing I haven’t gotten my head round is what time to log on to Ibiza Sonica Radio. 8| I never know for sure what time it is in another country until the pilot tells us! I mean, half the time I don’t know what day or time it is at home and when we change the clocks in Britain, it really confuses me. :)) I wonder if I would cross the international date line to get to LA? I’d probably arrive a day too late!

ash (who doesn’t really need trippy music, or drugs, to be out of her mind)

    1. Ibiza is one hour ahead of the UK, Ash, so you want to tune in for 6pm (GMT).

As for it being played live without David, it’s all synthesisers and samples anyway, so it’s perfectly plausible. The Orb are known for being delightfully experimental during their live performances, so you should always expect interesting improvisation.

🙂 Now I’m really thinking I’d love to be at one of these launches, these clubbers haven’t got a clue of how much of a treat is in store for them.

Theoretically then, is it possible for a guitarist to play live whilst The Orb do their thing? Maybe this could be a great live show to take on tour… praying…

Looking forward to tuning in at 6pm (thanks Fed).

  9. I would love to come to the LA show.

My name is Casey Leveque and my number is […], I would like 4 tickets.

    Thank you.

  11. I guess I’ll wait and listen when it’s released.

Hopeful that a video is commencing Fed. 😉

  12. Given the size of these venues, I would think The Orb would care to play in more then just these two locations. Or perhaps these are merely the first two dates of a more extensive tour to be announced later. Maybe it’s just my wish that the nearest of these venues weren’t 3,000 miles away!!! Because if The Orb were playing nearer to me at a price I could afford, I’d definitely go!

Price is absolutely a factor here. Roger is doing a show I’d DIE for, in several locations I could get to, but the ticket prices are much too high.

Incidentally, if anyone wants to read about Roger’s Wall tour, he’s the cover article on the current Rolling Stone magazine (in the US).

  13. ‘Lo all.

Well there I was, listening intently to Friday evening’s Orb Session on “Ibiza Sonica”, to my amazement, just as another swirl of ambient guitar hit the speakers the DJ introduced a guest and both talked over the top of the music struggling to mention anything constructive. Apart from “Down there people are talking, but the sound through the earphones is so much better”. I for one didn’t have earphones with a direct link to the mix desk. I couldn’t hear the crowd talking at all, but could hear the voice of said DJ who appeared clueless to the Orb’s work and the equally clueless guest, far too often!

    I give up!!

    Rant over.

    1. I hated the commentator talking over the music like that too, Mike. The damned commentator talking over the music and David’s guitar in particular. When he interrupted David again to tell us there was going to be a wonderful sunset, I switched off!

Sorry David. It was so irritating, I decided I’d rather hear the album when it comes out than have my initial impression spoiled by an idiot that doesn’t know when to shut up.

Ooooh, that feels better. I enjoyed a rant too, Mike. 🙂

      ash

    2. I wasn’t too chuffed with the DJs talking over the music either. I assumed it was so that no-one could just record it off the radio.

Did I hear ‘Blade Runner’ on the Spheres half?

  14. I’m sorry I couldn’t find a way to follow the Ibiza event online, yesterday. I’m sure it would have been interesting, especially for those like me, who are not much experienced in electronic music.

L.A. is definitely too far for me, so I think I’ll just listen to the album at home, when it will be released.

    No lasers here…only alcohol. 😉

  15. 😀 Good day to all my fellow bloggers and to you Fed, it has been a long time. I want to say Hello especially to Frank Par and to Werner and Angelo who in the past always said nice things about my posts. I also am very excited and cannot wait for the release, and it happens to be on my birthday. 😀

Keep up the great work Fed, the site is great and I have to say I really enjoy Polly’s new website. Filled with wonderful photos of the Hoping Benefit.

    Sincerely

    Linda
    Williamsville, NY

  16. … no way to make it to one of the places, but honestly, I’m not sure I want to hear any samples. 😉

I’ll check the ORB album though, after its release…

    Best regards

    Taki

  17. Too far away for me, but cool that you’re giving tickets away.

I’ll wait for the album. I like what I’ve heard of it so far.

  18. Two major events where David could have been playing in the world Friday night had he wished: Chicago (The Wall) and Ibiza (Metallic Spheres). Wonderful! A fan in Chicago wrote: “Claiming you’re playing Comfortably Numb without David Gilmour is like Mike Love claiming to be the Beach Boys.”

David is the new Elvis: sightings of him in Toronto, in malls (malls?! 😮 ) in Chicago and now Pittsburgh. Astonished, dignified gentlemen being rushed for autographs while exiting restaurants.

There is so much expectation on David’s Wall appearance, it sort of takes one’s breath away.

Lucky folks who go to see The Orb in Ibiza or LA: tell us all about it; ENJOY! 🙂

    Hugs,
    Bella xoxox

  19. I listened to the show on Ibiza Sonica for a while on Friday evening.

Electronic music is not really my cup of tea (I find it boring and very repetitive in general) and oh yes, the commentator really got on my nerves too, but between all his ‘blablabla…’, what I heard reminded me of the soundtrack of ‘The Colours Of Infinity’ (documentary about fractal geometry), composed and played by David (in 2004, I think), that I like very, very much.

So, yes, I will definitely buy the album (but just the standard CD).

    Thank you for the link.

  20. I just ordered my copy of “Metallic Spheres.” It will be delivered within a few days of its release. The last time I obtained new music within a week of its release was “On An Island” in 2006.

It’s a risk to get an album like “Spheres” as synthesized ambient music doesn’t usually “do it” for me. But from the samples on the microsite, I think I’ll like this music. I already plan to use it in my classroom.

  21. Hey FEd, I’ve been hearing about a new Bryan Ferry album that is coming out soon. I’m told David is a player on that album. Can you tell me more?

  22. Hi Fed,

If you are stuck for a topic then a worthy one, and one that has been close at hand recently, would be breast cancer awareness.

Mrs Pete was struck down with it in March and although all the nasty stuff is now over and she is back at work you still have cancer for a 5 year period (in the UK that is).

What happened was that she went for a routine mammogram that turned out to be positive, had an operation. (Well you have 2 actually. The lumpectomy and a lymph node sample. The lymph node sample determines if it had spread or not.) Thankfully the tumour was caught early and the cancer had not spread so therefore a course of radiotherapy was recommended as opposed to chemotherapy had it spread.

Anyway, as I say, all the nasty stuff is over and all is going in the right direction and fingers crossed it will not return.

Now the important thing here is that it was detected early and I am now on a campaign to spread the word to the ladies on the blog that early detection is vital and that if you get an invitation to go for a mammogram…

IF YOU NEVER LISTEN TO A THING I SAY AGAIN, JUST DO IT!!

    1. Very well said, Pete.

September is actually Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, by the way, which I’m told is linked to breast cancer. More on that shortly.

(I think next month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.)

Continued best wishes to Mrs Pete.

    2. Thanks for your post, Pete. I’m so glad your wife’s cancer free. My brave Amazon Warrior mother had a mastectomy in June, and is undergoing chemotherapy every 3 weeks through December. I’m steering clear until we get over the round of bugs we’ve had lately. I can’t emphasize how much a social support network helps, and I can’t thank my mothers’ friends for all that they have done to help her through this.

    3. Glad to hear Mrs Pete is on the mend Pete. 🙂 Best wishes to all the family.

Thank you for your reminder to ladies on the blog to take advantage when a mammogram is offered. I have two friends who have been successfully treated, one has recently had reconstruction surgery too.

  23. Hi F’Ed-

Was just thrilled to read about the date/time of this event for Metallic Spheres, as I will be in LA that day and the next to catch the brilliant seven from Manchester, James.

Back in 2006 you had a similar offer that enabled me to see David, Richard (RIP :-/ ) and Co. at the Jay Leno/Tonight show taping in LA when I was already going to be in town to see the 4/19 and 4/20 shows and to this day, it is one of my fondest memories of that trip. (In fact, you can see the top of my head in one of Polly’s photos from that day that made the site/gallery). So I guess thanks are indeed in order again for that.

If at all possible I would love to secure four (4) tickets for this Metallic Spheres laser event (myself +3) in LA…

Please let me know if there is still room, I would be honored to be among those in attendance that evening.

Thanks again for doing what you do!

    Best

  24. The Orb in LA is terribly tempting.

But I know my way around Washington DC, for 10/10/10, which is far closer, and I’m hoping for- well, do I really have to say it???

Our hopes lie with you to make the impossible possible!

  25. 😀 WOW! How amazing that this will be happening in my own backyard! I’d love to be able to get to this show if there are places still available for LA! If at all possible can you reserve 2 tickets for me? Thank you in advance… and hope to be hearing from you soon!

    Cheers!

  26. […]

Would love tickets for the LA show. Myself + 1 would be fantastic.

    Cheers!

  27. Please reserve 3 tickets for the Los Angeles laser event on October 12th. Would be honored.

    THANKS.

  28. Please include Jim Clayton + 3 friends (total of 4 tickets) for the Metallic Spheres Laser Show on Tuesday 12 October, 2010 at the Masonic Lodge at 2244 Westwood Boulevard, Los Angeles.

    I’ve already pre-ordered Metallic Spheres on Amazon.com.

Thank you for bring this show out to SOCAL!

    Jim

  29. I would love 2 tickets to the LA show, if they’re still available.

    Thanks!

  30. I would like to attend show on October 12th in Los Angeles. 3 tickets would be great. Thanks.

    1. If you would like to be there on 12 October, however, let me know. Please include your full name and contact telephone number, as well as the number of tickets you require.

As I said, I need a full name, preferably with a telephone number.

Please check your e-mail and respond to it by the end of the day – no later. That’s the only way I can get you on the guest list, I’m afraid. Right now, I’m sorry to say that you’re not on it, so I hope to hear from you soon.

  31. If it’s not too late, I would love 4 tickets to the Orb show on the 12th.

    […]

    Thank you!

    1. I need a real name – in full.

Please check your e-mail and respond to it, including your full name (which will not be published here or anywhere else, don’t worry; it’s for the guest list only), by the end of the day. As things stand, you will get no further than the door.

  32. The allocation of tickets for tomorrow night’s L.A. launch event has now been used up and winning entrants have all been e-mailed. No further names will be considered.

Thank you all for your interest; I hope you have a great time.

  33. Guys,

the address in this post is wrong! It’s taking place at 6000 Santa Monica Blvd in The Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetary!

    See here.

  34. Hi good morning FEd!

Just this morning I found this article on Spiegel online about The Orb and their latest album.

    Have a nice weekend
    Herbert
