Radcliffe & Maconie

David rehearsing in Gdańsk, 26 August 2006

Seeing as some of you have already heard this news over the airwaves this evening…

Do tune in to Radcliffe & Maconie for a live ‘Echoes’ exclusive on Wednesday 24 September.

As well as ‘Echoes’ in all its glory, David will chat.

You can listen online, either live (Listen in the top-right) or by selecting Listen Again (scroll down the page and select the desired day; you have a full week after the broadcast to do so).

That’s Wednesday 24 September between 20:00 and 22:00 (UK), BBC Radio 2.

If you’re in the UK, you can find Radio 2 at 88-91 FM, listen through your DAB
digital radio or even your television: channel 0102 on Sky, 902 on Virgin and 702 on Freeview.

Stuart Maconie, you may recall, compèred the ‘Remember That Night’ premiere at London’s Leicester Square last year.

Don’t forget the current issue of Mojo magazine, available now, which is worth picking up. It’s the one with Queen on the cover.

  1. FEd’s working late again. You should call this place Late Night News, LOL!

[Tell me about it. – FEd]

  2. Burning the midnight oil FEd?

Now that it’s September I’m hoping I can make it to at least one chat session. It seems like ages since I’ve been able to squeeze in an early-morning (for us on the West Coast) visit.

This Radcliffe and Maconie show sounds like it will be a fun listen — Echoes and a bit of chatting with David as well right after the big release date? September is sounding very, very good indeed!

    Peace!
    Gabrielle

  3. Hello, FEd!

I hope all is well with you.

I’m marking my calendar; thanks for keeping us up-to-date on everything!

Only thing we’re missing is “Blotto”…

    [Bless. – FEd]

  4. I am keeping track on all the upcoming special events – your calendar definitely comes in handy.

Thank you for all your hard work, FEd.

[Thank you for appreciating it. – FEd]

  5. Well, hello Fed and all here at the blog!

No, I didn’t fall off the face of the earth, it just felt that way. I am finally settled into my new digs and landed a job at a music store. The bloggers out there that know me will be happy to know that I made sure the shop is now carrying the GHS David Gilmour line of guitar strings. If only we were a Fender dealer my life would be complete.

Hey Susan….I’m thinking another get together for the cinema eh?

[Nice to hear from you, Tomi Sue. – FEd]

  6. As this will be the BBC, the programme should be available on their “listen again” feature on the web for those that miss it when first broadcast.

    Did that make sense?

    [Perfect sense. – FEd]

  7. Just to be sure it’s the one with Queen on the cover or The Queen? Hmmmm…does The Queen still have her Mojo??

    Thanks.

    Andrew

    [Did she ever? – FEd]

  8. This gets better all the time. At this rate there is so much happening that week beginning 22nd that I hope we still have time to listen to the CDs and watch the DVDs!

…..If this weather keeps up there won’t be a lot else to do….it’s still soggy in Surrey!

[Just when is it going to stop, Heather? – FEd]

  9. Hey FEd!

Waiting anxiously for a chance to chat with David later this month and to see and hear his new release!

  10. i know it’s not related but i just watched the blue and my jaw hit the floor. i’m still trying to gather up my busted teeth. wow!!!!

    thanks.

  11. [No, I didn’t fall off the face of the earth… – Tomi Sue]

I didn’t fall off either… just spending time being a daddy of two and being overworked over the summer…

  12. [David will chat. – FEd]

Oh! For a fraction of a second, I thought that David would enter ‘our’ chatroom!

    Un rêve éphémère…

    Michèle

  13. Wow, that’s long from now..

Finally got around to order the 5 disc set of Gdansk. Can’t wait for September 22 now.. £55,80 for not getting taxes.. Stupid Norway..

  14. Hey Fed,

I’ve just had a thought….the radio show is two days after the release of live Gdansk so by then the majority of sane people will have heard the version of Echoes on that release. Therefore using a bit of detective skills, is the version to be played on radio a version of Echoes previously unheard and unreleased.

    Cheers
    Andy

[Not that I know of, but it does seem rather a strange time for an ‘exclusive’. – FEd]

  15. Andrew,

The Queen would not have a Mojo, but she always has someone on hand with one, should it be required.

  16. Hello FEd,

Is it just me getting excited or do I sense a definite buzz ? 😉

The preview on the home page is really nice.

Hope to pop in for a chat tomorrow.

    Cheers,
    Ralph

  17. Hi Fed

Thanx for all the latest news! September is a good Gilmour-Month!

I just found out, that on David’s YouTube channel there is footage of Comfortably Numb live in Gdansk.

    bye
    Werner

[Another surprise (I should work late every night). Good to know. – FEd]

  18. Hi Fed.

I know this is not the right place but maybe you’d like to use my hosted photos (click my name to see one).

Leicester Square Odeon, Session 06. Sept. 2007

    Unbelievable, nearly one year ago.

    Beste Grüße
    Frank

[Great photos, Frank – vielen Dank. (It’s hard to believe that it was a year ago, isn’t it?) – FEd]

  19. Just thought that David and his fans would like to know that his picture is being used to advertise Zippo animal circus, following his visit to one of their shows (click my name)?

Which is ironic considering David advocates his support for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA); and lists them as one of his supported charities.

Like many fans this endorsement to animal cruelty at Zippo Circus has not gone down well and I urge you to please remove the picture and renounce animal cruelty.

[We were only debating this topic in the chatroom last week, as it happens. (And for what it’s worth, personally, I agree with you.) – FEd]

  20. Forgive me for stating the obvious, and developing a theme I’ve touched on before, but it occurs to me that there really is something unique about the tour that Live in Gdansk captures….

Lots of bands tour long after their “heyday” but David has gone out at the age of 60, performing new material and old favourites and, rather than playing pastiches and sing-a-longs of the hits, he has redefined those songs and polished them into something that represents definitive versions, beautifully crafted, played with new vigour and affection.

I don’t believe that has ever been done before. I don’t think there is a single version of a song on this tour that I would chose the original over, or the Pulse version, or Momentary lapse, or Live at Pompei etc.

Sorry, there is one – “the great gig”, noticeably absent from the DVD and album.

By the way, am I the only person who would looooooove to hear David play the “vocal” from “The Great Gig” on guitar? Now that would be something.

  21. Thanks for the good news FEd.

I haven’t posted in a bit, but I’m just busy. Don’t worry, I am not deliberately avoiding going on the blog to avoid the videos and audio from spoiling the Gdańsk coming soon! I hope us folks across the pond will get some interviews and appearances, as 20:00-22:00 Greenwich time is 1:00-3:00 over here, and on a Wednesday!

Have a good weekend if I don’t post tomorrow.
    Anthony

  22. here’s a question i’m surprised no one has asked yet:

will there be any hidden extras on the two dvds?

[You won’t be surprised to know that I’m not telling. – FEd]

  23. Should be able to catch it at about 8am – the time I’m supposed to start work.

I work for myself Fed so I might have it on in the background. Thanks for the info.

    Wilko

  24. Paul, that was good. How much can I get for my Strat with a cigarette burn on the headstock. LOL.

David and Jools will be good to hear also. Bring it on Fed.

  25. While we are talking about audio, Coverville has just posted the ‘The Pink Floyd Cover Story’ to ‘celebrate’ Roger’s birthday and what’s the first track they play? It’s David Gilmour and David Bowie ‘covering’ the Syd Barrett track, Arnold Layne!

As you will hear (click my name), it was I who made the request. 🙂

Some brilliant covers on the show that I had not heard previously too!

Can I have a job in the David Gilmour marketing department please? 😉

  26. I would rather my children watched a circus than play some of them awful games on a computer. I don’t see the cruelty here, sorry!

    Anyway….

    Have a nice weekend!!

  27. Hello all…I’m 50. Is that why I’m not allowed in the chat room?

[No, it’s because it closed more than an hour ago. – FEd]

  28. [Like many fans this endorsement to animal cruelty at Zippo Circus has not gone down well and I urge you to please remove the picture and renounce animal cruelty. Paul]

Hmmmm…isn’t this stereotypical?? I personally don’t like the circus because I really don’t find it entertaining.

However, I also know there are certain circus companies that entertain without animals. Granted I don’t know the specifics about Zippo.

And just because David goes to the circus doesn’t mean he endorses anything. The only reason I would agree for taking the picture off the site would be strictly personal.

Fact is, we don’t need to know what David does with his personal time with the family.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

[Indeed. That’s the last comment on the topic, thank you. – FEd]

  29. Hmmmm, this threw me as it says “Join Them” and then these names still appear: FEd, lorraine, Melissa, Michele.

[Preferably when it’s open. Sorry, but I can’t let people in through the back door; you can imagine how popular that would be. That’s why there has to be a cut-off time, which is always made clear. – FEd]

  30. Don’t feel bad Parish, I missed the chat room cutoff last Friday and was left on the outside looking in. And FEd had quite the marathon going too.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

[I hope you can both make it when the time’s better suited to your time zones. – FEd]

  31. [That’s why there has to be a cut-off time, which is always made clear. – FEd]

But I haven’t received an invitation in ages, have those stopped?

[Afraid so. Haven’t had those since late-February. – FEd]

  32. [By the way, am I the only person who would looooooove to hear David play the “vocal” from “The Great Gig” on guitar? Now that would be something. – Tim_C]

Hi Tim. It could be something.

I possess a tribute DVD featuring Jeff Beck working over Brian Wilson’s ‘Surf’s Up’ to overall good effect, allowing that ‘SU’ is innately quite amenable to the voiceless performance given the stunning lyrical quality of that music; which in turn lends meaning to abstract but still vivid lyrics.

One of the finest things about David Gilmour’s guitar music, when it is not forthrightly bluesy, is this often lyrical quality.

Some music seems to beg for words that seem absent.
For me, ‘Great Gig’ seems to be lyric gospel-like music that happens to be played by voices. I thought this was a dramatic way to go.

But, yes, I’d like to hear that guitar have a go at it – maybe Richard Wright would agree.

  33. As you can see, I’m not getting much work done today! There’s too much to catch up on.

Great photo Frank! Hope to see more.

I agree with Andy about it being a bit late for an exclusive.

Oh, and Blotto looked like a lot of fun!

[Oh, it was. Click your name for another of Frank’s photos. – FEd]

  34. [As it’s not obvious, please note that you need to click LISTEN NOW (at the top) to be able to listen again. The player will then pop up in a new window, where the archives and how you play back old shows (LISTEN AGAIN) becomes apparent. – FEd, 2 September]

[You can listen online, either live (Listen in the top-right) or by selecting Listen Again (scroll down the page and select the desired day; you have a full week after the broadcast to do so). – FEd, 3 September]

I forgot to say that your help is much appreciated (especially for us, non English people, therefore not that familiar with English radio stations’ websites).

Your explanations are always very clear and complete. C’est parfait. Merci.

    Michèle

[Thanks very much, glad I could be of help. – FEd]

  35. [The radio show is two days after the release of live Gdansk so by then the majority of sane people will have heard the version of Echoes on that release. – Andy]

It can’t be much of an exclusive if we’ve all heard it, LOL!

  36. Thanks Fed, I’ll try and pay more attention. I’ve had many distractions lately.

    Speaking of distractions…

I’m going to see ex-Renaissance bandmates, Annie Haslam and John Tout on 9/20 at the Sellersville Theatre in PA. It’s Tout’s first live performance in over 25 years!

    [Hope you enjoy. – FEd]

  37. […he has redefined those songs and polished them into something that represents definitive versions, beautifully crafted, played with new vigour and affection. – Tim C.]

Indeed, and I second what you said Tim.

Perfect example is the song “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” provided by Richard a few days back where David has changed his voice inflection to a new version. It made the song more folk sounding, emotional, heartfelt and maybe even a bit reflective, that’s my 2-cents.

To David Gilmour – many thanks for taking us through such a beautiful journey at Live in Gdansk.

  38. About the chatroom. From what I can see from Twitter, the chats seem like a lot of fun!

I noticed that you were thinking of ways to stop cats from chewing electrical cables the other day!

[Thanks very much, glad I could be of help. – FEd]

Oh FEd, you are always of help!

I may be fairly new to posting, but I have read up and even I can see that you do more than you should do here. You are appreciated!

[Watch out, Barbara, I might just have found a new favourite. And yes, we cover all the important topics: nuclear energy, politics in the Middle East, cats chewing cables… – FEd]

  39. Oh! Santa FEd! Amazing! You truly are the best!

Watch out, Fran, I am the new favourite! 😉

    Michèle

  40. [Watch out, Barbara, I might just have found a new favourite. – FEd]

No worries here Fed. I will brush up on my compliments and Southern born charm. Do remember the compliments come from the heart!

Tonight I must say my compliments are for David and his music. I just tried to watch some of the MTV Music (?) Awards and I have to say this show is sadly mis-named. There is no “Music” on this show, only screaming and trash behavior. Am I alone in thinking this? It makes me appreciate David and all that make wonderful MUSIC with him. I wish I had better words than just thank you, but, thank you so much for the wonderful music.

And of course, thank you Dear Fed for being a part of his music family also. (How was that!)

Hope you had a good weekend.

    Barbara P

[That was perfect, thank you. – FEd]
