'Astronomy Domine'

A view of the Gdańsk crowd with the Monument to Fallen Shipyard Workers in the distance

Something else for you to listen to now: ‘Astronomy Domine’, over at MySpace.

The video is also there, but please bear in mind that YouTube is not the best way to enjoy Marc Brickman’s light show; it really does give a rather poor representation of the concert’s visual qualities.

If you haven’t already seen it, you can watch ‘High Hopes’ here or at Best Buy, as mentioned previously.

So, if you can spare six minutes…

Speaking of Best Buy, do note their snap of the five-disc set.

The poster, you might like to know, is double-sided: showing David with the Solidarity Monument (to Fallen Shipyard Workers) on one side, and a view from the stage captured during the show on the other.

As you can see from this shot of Polly’s, the Monument looms large over much more than Solidarity Square. Consisting of three steel crosses upon which anchors are mounted, it’s some 42 metres in height and stands on the spot where the first three victims of the 1970 workers’ strikes lost their lives.

The photographs were taken by Polly and Anna Włoch.

  1. Thanks for the info Fed. I will definitely be buying it from Best Buy!

But, what do you mean by “Speaking of Best Buy, do note their snap of the five-disc set.”??? Are they misleading us by saying that they have an exclusive?

[I think so, it’s available elsewhere in the States (but not as widely as some would like it to be, I’m sure). They don’t have anything extra included with their five-disc deal, but they do have a better illustration than I’ve seen on other sites. – FEd]

  2. Great.

If I recall correctly, David said that when he started the On An Island tour he wanted to do a smaller tour in smaller venues without huge laser and light shows.

Here we see him play in front of 50 000 people with an amazing light show.

What is the lesson? You can take the man out of Pink Floyd but not Pink Floyd out of the man?

  3. In response to Sami re small venues:

I thought a crowd of 50,000 is a small gig for David.

  4. […They don’t have anything extra included with their five-disc deal, but they do have a better illustration than I’ve seen on other sites. – FEd]

They don’t but the ad is a bit confusing. No?

It talks about an “exclusive bonus CD.” But the next line says 3 CDs (including Bonus CD). So a quick read you may conclude that there are 6 disks total.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

[Indeed, although then it says that the bonus CD, which it suggests is the one with the 12 live tracks, “will arrive in the package with the box set.” I’m waiting for clarification on that and will update ASAP. – FEd]

  5. Shame on you all, if you watch this!! (^Z^)

Just looking at the picture up there, and It makes me wonder if David was transfixed by that ominous monument in front of him.

It was a foreboding thing, and smoke was billowing out of the shipyards as he played…

“A million miles from home, you’re on your own…”

(I hope saying that thing about the monument doesn’t offend anyone.)

  6. Best Buy has the exclusive deal in the US on the 5-disc set, unless something has changed. Amazon has a preorder of an imported PAL set at $115.99, but that is not a domestic, NTSC set, which is what Best Buy alone will be selling.

All I want to see is that Best Buy is going to have a sale price on this set. $69.99 is pretty steep even for a nice set like this. We can thank Radiohead for starting this trend last year with their ridiculous In Rainbows “discbox.”

Not too thrilled about the trend (pricing-wise, I mean,) but I’m still buying the set anyway . . .

  7. OMG!!! Just checked out photo of 5-disc set linked on the news page, WOW!!!

My juices are beginning to flow, its my wedding anniversary on 22nd and birthday on 24th, I have week of work, AM I LOOKING FORWARD TO IT?!?!?!?!?

    [Yes? – FEd]

  8. Hello FEd,

thank you, really, your ideas and creativity are so adapted, various and professional always.

I think DG is very precious in the choice for the blog director and master.

    You are in my heart,
    diana

[That’s very nice of you, Diana. Thank you, I appreciate that. – FEd]

  9. Hey Fed,

I´m doing the same question again. Do you know why Amazon.com have the vinyl release date as November 25?

I´m afraid that my box will arrive only in late November…

[I’ve not been made aware of any delay in its release. – FEd]

  10. They are wonderful pictures. I thought I had looked at all the photos in the gallery. It’s amazing how when you select one for a blog post I normally click on it and get drawn back in to the gallery thinking I had not seen that one before.

You did say in the chat that you thought they had been fiddled around with but perhaps it’s reading about the time that the photo was taken which makes it all the more relevant.

  11. Thanks for the update on Best Buy’s not so exclusive deal FED.

Am I correct when I say the only bonus CD known to date is still at the INDIE stores, that include a CD with “Wot’s…the Deal”?

    THANKS
    GEORGE

[Yes, as far as I can see. Have you seen the Latest News? Does is explain anything to you? – FEd]

  12. I pre-ordered my 5-disc set from the “David Gilmour Official Store” for $69.99 and, as far as I can tell, it’s the same package as Best Buy.

I must say I was tempted to buy some of the other merchandise because of the 10% discount offered with the pre-order but, after adding a couple of shirts and The Black Strat Book to my shopping cart, I talked myself down from the shopping-spree ‘high’ and only ordered two 5-disc LiG packages. Yes, that’s right, TWO!! Still might have to get those other items later when I can come up with a valid excuse — maybe an early New Year’s present or something. ;^D

Missed chat today unfortunately (boo-hoo, me being bummed out). I swear, I’m gonna make it one of these days now that the busy summer schedule is slacking off a bit!

    Now, to watch or not to watch Astronomy Domine?? I’ll never tell. ;^}

    Peace!
    Gabrielle

  13. Fed,

There looks to be a lot more than 50000 people in this crowd. The concert looks massive.

It would have been fantastic being there.

    Wilko

  14. Man, I’ve heard some words from Dave that he don’t like to play to great audiences (Festival and Stadium), he say that makes a lot of nervous! PULSE is proof of this, after Learning To Fly you can see his face and a phrase wrote down in it: “Man, what I’m going to say?”

    Dave is kinda fun!

Anyways, great audiences or small, he’s always known how to put this out and make the show go on…

    See ya!

  15. Hey,

Here’s a short mention of the new CD + a funny picture from a Danish paper (click my name).

Looks like Lech Walesa is about to go tickle…

[Thank you, Lene. Keep the articles coming. – FEd]

  16. I don’t understand how this is “exclusive” at all. There’s nothing “exclusive” inside!

[It’s “exclusive” in that you’ll be lucky to find it in any other stores across the States. – FEd]

  17. i’ve just looked at the picture of the 5 disk version. does all that extra content (photos, poster, guitar pick, and so on) come with the uk version as well?

[Yes, it’s exactly the same set. The only difference is that the UK version will come from EMI and the one that Best Buy are showing off will come from Sony BMG. – FEd]

  18. [Best Buy has the exclusive deal in the US on the 5-disc set, unless something has changed. Amazon has a preorder of an imported PAL set at $115.99, but that is not a domestic, NTSC set, which is what Best Buy alone will be selling. – Tom]

Thank you for that explanation, Tom. All is now clear. 🙂

[Please remember that David has two record companies: EMI in Europe and Sony around the world. Amazon’s import is the EMI version, as Tom says, in PAL format. Unless your DVD player can handle PAL discs, don’t consider importing the EMI version. The NTSC/Sony version is exclusive to Best Buy in the US. That’s not to say that you won’t find the five-disc set elsewhere in the US, because it’s quite possible that you will spot it here and there, but – officially – Best Buy should definitely be your first port of call because they’ll definitely have it. The Sony five-disc deluxe set (in NTSC format) is not available from Anthill’s North American store, in spite of it being listed there and pre-orders already taken. Unfortunately, that is a mistake, it should never have been listed and I apologise for the inconvenience. To reiterate, if you want the five-disc deluxe set and you are in the US, you want Best Buy. (Sorry, Gabrielle, but you’ll have to order again… from Best Buy.) And just to confuse you even more, the five-disc deluxe set may be available from Anthill to fans outside the US. When that is confirmed, I’ll let you know. – FEd]

  19. Ahah! The ‘Latest’ News (9 September) on the homepage… let me laugh!!!

I am the only one to find this hilarious?…or irritating, in fact…

    Vive le blog!

    Michèle

    [I think we’re all a bit confused. – FEd]

  20. FEd,

It may have been mentioned before but the DVDs in this release, will there be region specific releases? This is something that may be worth adding to your nifty Gdansk options chart.

After all, it would be a shame if someone spends the cash to secure the release and then finds out that they can’t even play the darn thing on their DVD.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

[Is the spoon-feeding really necessary? Maybe it is, that was a serious question. – FEd]

  21. Let me say that Astronomy Domine is fantastic, but High Hopes tour version amazes me any time I listen to it as the first time.

I always loved madly the guitar solo, but what it became in the tour version is something that leaves me without words, only with a very big smile! And the orchestra really gives it some more magic.

    Peace & Love
    Lucia

  22. [The Sony five-disc set (in NTSC format) is not available from Anthill’s North American store, in spite of it being listed there and pre-orders already taken. Unfortunately, that is a mistake, it should never have been listed and I apologise for the inconvenience caused. – FEd]

Poor you, LOL! Why should one store (Best Buy) have the exclusive on this anyway?

  23. This is all getting a little out of hand at the moment, please help!

    Gary Hurley
    London England.

[You didn’t want one imported when you can get it easily enough in the UK, Gary, did you? – FEd]

  24. [I am the only one to find this hilarious?…or irritating, in fact…Vive le blog! – Michèle]

Nope…although, I’m pleased as punch that the cardboard is ‘sturdy’.

    OK, I’ll stop.

[The use of plastics has been kept to a minimum in the manufacture of all versions, with cardboard obviously being a renewable material and, in my personal opinion, in no way an inferior packaging alternative to plastic in terms of its sturdiness. What do you think? – FEd]

  25. I can see now why having several options is a pain. I get anxiety reading all these questions. 🙂

It’s like going to the grocery and having about 20 different types of bread to chose from, or different strengths of milk, 2%, 1%, skimmed and full fat… where will it end?

Oh, I forgot about the organic options.

    [And then there’s fair trade… – FEd]

  26. Not sure if it was mentioned before, but there is a story on MSNBC about David and his new live album. I found it last night so it might be old news by now.

[Thanks, Eva. (Please click Eva’s name above to have a read.) – FEd]

  27. I think, I don’t really have a preference for any type of packaging on aesthetic grounds so whatever one does least damage to the planet works just fine for me.

  28. [Is the spoon-feeding really necessary? Maybe it is, that was a serious question. – FEd]

My question was asked before I saw your very excellent response to Nate which explains everything clearly. I certainly wasn’t trying to get you wound up or frustrated. But I think you will also agree that here, sometimes, spoon-feeding is necessary.

[The use of plastics has been kept to a minimum in the manufacture of all versions, with cardboard obviously being a renewable material and, in my personal opinion, in no way an inferior packaging alternative to plastic in terms of its sturdiness. What do you think? – FEd]

Absolutely. Do you remember the case a few years ago of a person who built furniture out of Fedex boxes (click my name)?

Now if we tried to do that with the Gdansk release surely it would be certified Platinum in no time.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

[I’d have to agree with that (the spoon-feeding). Good point. – FEd]

  29. Dear David,

I am so very distressed on your feelings that Pink Floyd was and there is only your own legacy now.

I feel that the tables have turned for the better for you and Roger and something so very BRILLIANT could come out of another collaboration with the four of you one more time. Time is slipping away so fast as you and I know….

I beg you to reconsider a final reorganization of the original band. You have always had my heart resting on your E string. Your music is what I live for, after my wife. Ahem. 🙂

If it were not for Syd and Roger would you have had the famous/lucrative last solo record and the previous solo success? God only knows and I hope he is there.

I have to imply you might somewhat owe us FLOYDSTERS of sooo many years another full throttle Pink Floyd reunion. I feel the tables have turned for this moment, but you are stuck in some form of bitterness. Please let go of that.

I pray for you and your family as well as the others.

For the love of GOD and for your devoted fans please open your heart one more time. We may only come around once, I may believe and I selfishly do not want to miss the opportunity to hear you and Roger put together a truly supreme Final Cut.

    I love you,
    Dan Stewart, Milwaukee WI

[Let me get this straight. Now that Roger – allegedly – quite fancies a reunion, after so many years of not wanting to know (which was fair enough, of course, as Roger did his own thing in that time and it brought a lot of pleasure to a lot of people), there should suddenly be a “full throttle Pink Floyd reunion” as soon as possible? Time was somehow less significant between 1985 and Live8? David “might somewhat owe” you something… Give me, and especially David, a break. At least you acknowledge that you’re being selfish, I suppose. That’s a start. – FEd]

  30. [… Give me, and especially David, a break. At least you acknowledge that you’re being selfish, I suppose. That’s a start. – FEd]

Another good reply Fed. Do you have a lot of these sily post that you don’t publish?

I wonder what gets into people that they think they need to tell David, and the other members of Pink Floyd, what they should do.

I am just happy David is willing to still give us his beautiful music, old and new.

Thank you David. You “owe” us nothing. Most of us here are more than happy to gladly accept the wonderful music you find it in your heart to send our way.

    Barbara P

[Not too many, thankfully. – FEd]
