Uh The Deal

Blog Poll: Have you pre-ordered your copy of 'Live in Gdańsk' yet? 38% vote 'Yes', 62% vote 'No'.

Thanks for the feedback regarding the best ‘Gdańsk’ prices. Keep your observations coming (to that page, not this one, please). I hope it’s been helpful.

Just to throw something else into the mix, consider the following, if you will.

FYE.com will include a free random pack of GHS strings with the first 50 pre-orders. I don’t yet know which set you have to buy to qualify, but bear them in mind.

Even better, perhaps: Indie stores in the US will include a CD of ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’ if you pre-order ‘Live in Gdańsk’. That applies to all bar the deluxe and vinyl sets and is only happening in the USA.

Before you start throwing questions and criticism at anyone or anything, iTunes will include ‘Wot’s…’ – free – if you download the album in full (that is to say, the contents of the two live Gdańsk CDs). You cannot download it individually.

And, if you’ll soon be the owner of a DVD web pass, you’ll also be able to download ‘Wot’s…’ free of charge, along with the 12 live tracks. However, you won’t get it immediately, you can only download one track per month (and no, I don’t know the proposed order, so please don’t ask).

The full track also runs over the credits on the concert DVD, so you’ll have it right there (unless you’re getting the two-disc or vinyl, obviously).

Anyway, ‘Wot’s…’ will be available at MySpace the week after next. I’ll let you know when.

  1. [The full track also runs over the credits on the concert DVD – FEd]

Well I’m happy with that as I will be buying the 5 disc edition.

However, it is my opinion that the decision to make the track ‘Album Only’ from iTunes is pure greed… nothing more. 🙁

  2. Hi gang,

I have just received in my inbox an e-mail from “davidgilmour@emirecords.co.uk” with a competition to win the 2CD edition of “Live In Gdansk”, along with pre-order for all 5 formats from Amazon.co.uk.

    Gary Hurley
    London England.

    [Good luck. – FEd]

  3. Hi Fed and all,

Well, everything is gearing up nicely for the big ‘Gdansk’ day..hope you don’t get stressed Fed. 😉 No grumps from me anyway.

Good start by the ‘pool .. just need a good wide man methinks ?

    Cheers

[A battling start, I reckon. Long may it last. – FEd]

  4. At first I thought this meant you wouldn’t get the download of “Wot’s…” with the 5 disc version but on checking the grid I see that it does include a web pass so that’s OK, panic over!

I’ve just listened to the audio versions of “Comfortably Numb” and “Astronomy Domine” and they are wonderful.

[Just to clarify… The web pass is for ‘Wot’s…’, the 12 live tracks and anything else that might be made available to you electronically in future. The only people that won’t have a web pass are those that opt for the basic two-disc version (the live concert on CD only) and the vinyl. ‘Wot’s…’ is included on the vinyl, anyway. You can also download the vinyl’s concert tracks with the vinyl’s web pass equivalent. Hope that helps. – FEd]

This should be a specialised subject on Mastermind. 😉

  6. [Just to throw something else into the mix… – FEd]

Don’t want to offend anyone, but, would I dare to say that I’m starting to have enough of all these ‘merchandising’ things?

I know, I know, no one forces me to…

    Michèle

  7. Sorry FEd and David, I THINK this is good news, but why isn’t it available to download individually from iTunes? I’d pay for it. That’s not very fair!

I’ve pre-ordered the 5-disc set but I don’t want to have to wait 12 months for it!

[Maybe you won’t have to wait that long. – FEd]

  8. FEd,

Have to say that your headline for this entry is one of the best to date. Very creative. I love it.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

[You think so? Not too corny? – FEd]

  9. Hmmmm…the U.S. gets special little goodies from time-to-time which effectively could be imported into other countries. However it seems the U.K. gets special appearances by the man himself (RTN Theatre performances, AHM performance, etc.). It is much more costly to import yourself to attend these kind of events than it is to get a CD imported.

Let’s take the whole picture into consideration as well, then let’s discuss what is fair and what is not.

Kinda funny how so many gripe about the capitalist system within the U.S., yet if they had the opportunity they would jump into it with two feet. How many U.K. artists have moved to the U.S.? How many U.K. artists completely ignore the U.S. market? If they want to be rich and successful – not many.

Is part of this greed? Absolutely and face it, there is a bit of greed in every single person.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

[Yes, that is true. – FEd]

  10. Will David be promoting the Gdansk album. Will there be any live gigs?

    Yours
    Nara

[No live gigs, no. – FEd]

  11. Just had an email from “David Gilmour”. Ahhh, heart pounding, breathless. Opened it, with hand shaking, and it was from the record company with the links to Amazon and the competition mentioned by Gary above!!!

I’ve never known an album marketed so much before.

Since it has all the hallmarks of being such a masterpiece, I wonder how many others will convert to Gilmourism. 🙂

    Is it September yet?

    Paul

  12. This whole album is turning out to be just as complex as a game of Fizzbin.

I can’t keep up! My brain hurts!

  13. [Don’t want to offend anyone, but, would I dare to say that I’m starting to have enough of all these ‘merchandising’ things? – Michele]

Michele, are you trying to take my role in this blog community as the sourpuss? 😉

It’s a long time since I write. I am sorry to have “lost” the possibility to write about music of the ’90s etc….

This summer I was at Sziget Festival in Budapest. You know it? Great rock festival, great atmosphere, great people….. Everyone from all nations together in peace and friendship. Music is a great thing…..

  14. I like to get the audio-CD sound quality so the good news is that they finally issue ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’ on physical CD.

Any helpful information on where/how I can get hold of a copy outside of the USA is welcome.

Next step : issuing the whole show on DVD in a few years…with the Island Jam live @ the Odeon as a bonus?

    [Keep hoping. – FEd]

  15. off subject:

according to allmusic.com these are the song times for disc 2:

shine on you crazy diamond 12:07
    astronomy domine 5:03
    fat old sun 6:40
    high hopes 9:58
    echoes 25:26
    wish you where here 5:16
a great day for freedom 5:56
    comfortably numb 9:23

are these the real song times or are they just guesses? because i’m wondering if all that could really fit onto one disc (sorry i can’t add it all up myself as my maths is poor) but it would be so good if they are the correct times.

[And some people wonder why ‘Wot’s…’ isn’t on there, as well. It simply would not fit. – FEd]

  16. I just listened to Comfortably Numb from Live in Gdansk! Wow … that’s the best version EVER!!

Melissa told me the Gdansk concert was above and beyond — now I understand! I’ve been highly impressed with the amazing over-the-top quality performance in every video or audio so far. The RTN performance was fantastic but this performance at Gdansk, along with the addition of strings, really makes this hard to beat, in my humble opinion.

One small, personal note here — why does there have to be so much animosity about who gets what? I had to fly a total of 3000 miles round-trip to see David at the Kodak Theater while people in the UK had numerous special events in their own ‘back yard’ and may have more opportunities in the future to see David in person. I’d never bitch about that. Remember, we’re all here for one reason — our love of David’s music.

I haven’t pre-ordered yet as Amazon (here in the US) is only offering the 2 CD/2 DVD option at the moment. So …

    Peace!
    Gabrielle

[Where is this animosity? Other than one comment, I’m not seeing any. – FEd]

  17. Regarding the merchandising of Live in Gdansk, while it may appear to be simply a matter of raking in the big bucks, it seems that having so many options to choose from allows each individual to purchase a little or a lot, depending on their budget.

FEd, after hearing the first five (?) songs from Gdansk, do you have a favorite? You were there, weren’t you?

    Peace ‘n’ love!
    Gabrielle

    [I was, but I don’t have a favourite; they’re all good, aren’t they? – FEd]

  18. Re having to travel.

David is from England. He can decide how far and when he wants to go. Much to the chagrin of us in the States who are chompin’ at the bit to see him live.

  19. [And some people wonder why ‘Wot’s…’ isn’t on there, as well. It simply would not fit. – FEd]

Too many people seem to think that this song is expendable. I am not one of them. Wot’s is a lot better than some songs on the CD and much much less documented live.

Do I need another live rendition of CN…probably not.

    Cheers, Howard

  20. [Where is this animosity? Other than one comment, I’m not seeing any. – FEd]

I guess I’m just too ‘thin-skinned’ today and feeling the effects of too much work and no play. Although, in my defense, I’d have to say that I’ve felt the ‘spoiled American’ vibe on a few occasions … maybe my reaction is based more in the past than the present. If so, I apologize.

I’m hoping that in the future Americans won’t be perceived as the greedy, corrupt bottom-feeders that our current so-called ‘leadership’ makes us appear to be.

    Sorry FEd, for over-reacting.

    Peace ‘n’ love (truly)!
    Gabrielle

[Understood – and no need for an apology. – FEd]

  21. I don’t care for the merchandising. I don’t care for all the options. It’s the same reason I haven’t bought Windows Vista, too damn many choices.

While I like to choose amongst options, the fact that I have to buy both the 5 (optical) disc set and the 5 (vinyl) disc set to get what I want gives me no options. It’s burnt that I’m having to fork out close to $200 to get what I want, but it’s also my problem that I want it, and I fully understand that.

I am totally with Michele and Piergiorgio on this one . . .

  22. Hi from Hamilton Canada.

We up here are also eagerly awaiting the different Gdansk versions to drop, my own personal crisis is whether to trade in some of my guitars to ante up for one of those hallowed Gimour Strats, which looks like a $3300 dollar investment for the NOS Model.

Any one else out there in the same mindset. How are the U.K. prices shaping up on the Strat??

[What’s the best price so far? £2,499, wasn’t it? (Please click your name for more on this.) – FEd]

  23. Off topic.

Not even sure it merits a mention here but my son found this article online (click my name).

The silence from David, Rick and Roger is deafening and I’ve drawn my own conclusions from it.

    What a crap newspaper!

  24. [There’s C. Numb on Amazon today ! -Aurelien ]

Hmmmm, this version really sounds amazing !!!

  25. [Remember, we’re all here for one reason — our love of David’s music. – Gabrielle]

    Well said!

  26. Ah! ‘Wot’s……’! Wonderful track – Obscured By Clouds was probably the first, err, ‘obscure’ Floyd album I listened to back in the old days, rounded corners on the sleeve, the inner bag with all those other bands/artists on, the smell of the vinyl…………

Crikey I’m getting old, I’ll start dribbling next!

  27. FEd said that Indie stores will have a CD of ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’ included with the deluxe package.

What an Indie store? Is that a chain?

[The very opposite: an independent store. My apologies for not making it clearer. – FEd]

  28. Thanks for the link (and e-mail) FEd. I haven’t quite found a place to pre-order, mostly due to Best Buy’s lack of “in store pickup” on their website so far. AND to make matters worse, they don’t allow you to pre-order in the actual store! That’s American convenience for you.

And Nate, don’t even get me started on Apple and iTunes.

On a lighter note, 26 days left, if my mind doesn’t defy me, for the folks in the US. You lucky Britons and Europeans get it a day earlier.

    Anthony

[You’re very welcome, Anthony. – FEd]

  29. [Anyway, ‘Wot’s…’ will be available at MySpace the week after next. I’ll let you know when. – FEd]

Hahaha, good ole myspace…rarely ever make it on there anymore, tweet tweet tweet!

Can’t wait for things to get cooking!! That’s Wot’s good about DG DVDs coming out around October…closer to my birthday. 😉

I’ll put a request in and I did also receive an email in my inbox. All signed up and ready to go! Good luck to everyone else as well.

Cheers for a good rest of the week!
    K.C.

  30. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This marketing adventure is interesting. Different and unique.

All I can say is that David has earned his respect as a musician which has been long overdue. Good for him.

My question is “What do give him for Christmas?” LOL.

  31. This is one complicated release! Many different versions of this album, and we’re learning now that this one includes that song but only when purchased at the right place, etc.

I’m an advocate for consumer choice, but this is frankly confusing. I predict that people will buy this thing, and then find that they did not get everything they thought they would. F’Ed, you’re gonna have your hands full in the first few weeks.

Re: my new teaching job. I’m teaching at a brand new school. Students arrive next week. We’re in a century-old building that had been a Catholic school. The building is completely empty: no desks, no chalk, not even a pencil. Just the bare walls. Desks are arriving today, computers will arrive soon. Nearly everything else, we teachers are expected to provide. And because I don’t know what grade I’ll be teaching, I can’t do any lesson planning.

I’m very happy to be teaching, scared silly about the lack of equipment and supplies.

[Sounds like your hands will be just as full, Dan. The best of luck. – FEd]

  32. Live in Gdansk, it’s as awesome as every disc… I really wish a world tour of this work, it’s Time in my point of view..

Remember That Night Mexico… Someday (?).

    Congrats for “Live in Gdansk”!

    Best Wishes.
    Roberto E.

  33. Oh my God! I see today a mail I received from David’s staff and I suddenly find myself in front of 5 different versions of Live in Live In Gdansk…and I don’t know which one choose to buy! I presume the format 3 CDs and 2 DVDs is the best one….

Just to know (and I beg your pardon, FEd, if you already said that and I didn’t read or I forgot), which kind of format will be available in Italy? What I will find in Italian music shops?

If the format I will choose is not available, I will buy it on the internet, but if I can find it in the shop, I will buy it there…just to save the cost of the delivery.

When I bought Polly’s books on Amazon, the cost of the delivery has been more expensive than the cost of the books!

Thanks! You are a gold guy,
    Lucia

[You should be able to find all five sets in Italy: the basic two-disc right through to the vinyl. If you want the vinyl, by the way, you should pre-order it, just to be sure that you get one. Please let us know what you find and where you find it. – FEd]

  34. [FEd said that Indie stores will have a CD of ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’ included with the deluxe package. – Ryan]

    Is it the opposite?

“Indie stores in the US will include a CD […] That applies to all bar the deluxe and vinyl sets”

If I understand English correctly the Deluxe is excluded from that offer.

By the way where can we find a list of the participating Indie stores?

[Please click your name (and yes, you’re right: the deluxe and vinyl are not included). – FEd]

  35. I wasn’t aware of there being a specified order for a track each month to download, I had the impression all would be available and you just had to choose one each month.

If EMI decide not to have ‘Wot’s’ as the first track on download…….. well I’m sure we’ll all have words to say to them after forking out a good few bob on one of the many combinations.

[I’m sure there’ll be more said about the web pass before it can actually be used. – FEd]

  36. [Please let us know what you find and where you find it. – FEd]

I will. Thank you, mate. I am going to install great speakers and an home theatre at home, so I have great plans for the first viewing and listening of Live in Gdansk! I will let you know about that too!

    Have a wonderful day

    Lucia

[Great, I look forward to hearing about it. – FEd]

  37. Do I smell another DG Blog competition coming?? I get this feeling that something other than an arm is up FEd’s sleeve.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

    [Hmm… – FEd]

  38. I’m still disappointed and still agree with Nate, LOL!

Sorry Andrew and Gabrielle, DG lives in England like Bev says. Where he does “special appearances” is based on where he lives. If he lived in the USA you would still have the special appearances and the CD exculsives.

The “Wot’s…” CD only being available in the USA has nothing to do with where DG lives, so that’s no justification for this bad marketing decision. I just found out that Europe won’t get two of the free iTunes videos either. Is that because DG lives in England too? LOL!

Another thing, the RAH concerts were not in my “backyard”. I had to take time off work and travel down to London. We couldn’t all afford to stay overnight, so we drove through the night to get home and I lost two day’s pay because of it. I don’t regret it for a moment, but it was a sacrifice and I know that some people in the UK also had to miss out on concerts in the UK even if they didn’t have far to travel. I missed out on Cadogan Hall because I had to work.

All I’m saying is that if people are happy to pay, they should be able to get what they want and not just the people in the USA.

[We all know that there will be plenty of (EXCLUSIVE!!! RARE!!! FLOYD!!!) ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’ CDs on eBay come the end of September, so I’m sure you’ll get the chance to pay. I don’t know if it’ll make you happy, though. – FEd]

  39. [You cannot download it individually. – FEd]

Bad move IMO. I’d imagine greater takings on the day of release at a cost of 79p per track download.

I’ll wait until I can use the web pass and get it for free, thanks all the same.

    This is outright greed.

  40. [Any helpful information on where/how I can get hold of a copy outside of the USA is welcome. – JYB]

FED has provided a link with indie stores in the USA. Some also export outside the USA. And maybe the extra CD will pop up on eBay.

    Cheers.
    Robert

[I’m sure there will be plenty on eBay. Maybe even before you can say: “$15 for the two-disc version with a free exclusive CD that is sure to sell for at least $25 on its own? Why, those silly Europeans will pay anything… How can I afford not to buy one (box)? Barb, bring the car ’round, we’re taking them all.” For another useful link, please click your name above. – FEd]

  41. [I’m sure there will be plenty on eBay. Maybe even before you can say: “$15 for the two-disc version with a free exclusive CD that is sure to sell for at least $25 on its own? Why, those silly Europeans will pay anything… How can I afford not to buy one (box)? Barb, bring the car ’round, we’re taking them all.” – FEd]

Funny you should say that because there already are copies for sale. There’s also an item that EMI might want back.

  42. The indie store called Monster Music is where I’ll buy the standard edition for “Wot’s… Uh the Deal” and why not? (Will be my copy for the car.) I am a PF/DG collector so what the hey.

Then I will go to Best Buy for the 5-disc version (which my father is paying for and will be on sale at that point for $45 or something). Then again, I have the Best Buy issue of On an Island with “Island Jam” CD and (if memory serves) the first two DG solo albums on vinyl original Columbia/CBS issues.

Then I have the standard PF CDs plus the Oh By The Way box.

  43. News just in… ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’ will be the first web pass download.

If you’ll soon have a DVD web pass, you’ll be able to download it, free of charge, along with 12 bonus live tracks.

You’ll have a DVD web pass if you opt for either the three, four or five-disc sets.

The two-disc and vinyl versions do not include a DVD, although ‘Wot’s…’ is included on the vinyl, of course.

    Hope that pleases you.

  44. Hey, Fed!

I´d like to know what means the “Best Buy Exclusive” in Gdansk Deluxe Edition being sold on Best Buy website.

There will be an exclusive edition for that store??

Thanks and give my regards to Mr. Gilmour,
    Ramon

[I’ll tell you more about that when I know more about it. Please sit tight. – FEd]

  45. Is it just me or is this all getting a little too much with some people getting to see some videos somewhere at the cinema? Why could the whole concert not be on the DVD, Fed?

And this hunting for “Wot’s…” on a disc is irritating the hell out of me. Initially I pre-ordered the 2CD+1DVD from play.com, then I pre-ordered the 5 disc to get everything straight away instead of this one extra track a month nonsense. I am getting the feeling of being fleeced here. This is un-Gilmour like in my opinion.

Will we have to buy something else in 6 months to get the whole concert on DVD?

    [No, you won’t. – FEd]

  46. David Gilmour é o melhor guitarista do mundo e vocalista tambem, é a maior e melhor personalidade da musica.

I’m Alessandro Floyd. You are the best in the world on guitar. I want to say for you, David Gilmour, to play the music, Green Is The Colour, Cymbaline.

    Please come here to Brazil.

  47. [No, you won’t. – FEd]

Sorry FEd, how do we get these missing songs or are they on one of the DVDs hidden away as Easter eggs?

The songs I speak of are the Dark Side songs at the start of the concert, Shine On… and Wish You Were Here.

Maybe I am missing something here and being a bit thick. Please help.

[As far as I’m concerned, at this moment in time (and knowing nothing about any Easter eggs, although I wouldn’t tell you if I did, as they’re supposed to be something you find for yourself), they’re not on the DVD and there’s no way to get them. The songs you mentioned will be included in the cinema presentation. (The cinema has to have something extra, doesn’t it?) – FEd]

  48. Gabrielle is right… we’re here because we like David’s music so… let’s leave politics out of it.

Was the upcoming cinema shindig thrown together at the last minute? There are still no details and it’s less than three weeks away. I’ve slept since then, but it seems like the tickets for RTN went on sale well before this.
