Later… with Jools

Stevie in Gdańsk, 26 August 2006

Something you may already know about.

David will be performing ‘Astronomy Domine’, ‘Fat Old Sun’ and ‘This Heaven’ for Jools Holland’s ‘Later…’ programme, due for broadcast in the UK on Friday 26 September. He will also perform one song – live and also for ‘Later…’ – on Tuesday 23 September.

If you miss these performances, or just want to see them again and again, you should be able to watch both programmes for a whole week with BBC iPlayer the following week. This service is only available to fans in the UK.

However, sometimes the ‘Later…’ page at MySpace includes video, so keep an eye on that.

If either ‘Later…’ is coming up in your TV listings, do let us know when and where.

BBC4 will also have an hour from the Gdańsk concert on Friday 26 September, plus half an hour from the documentary (one of the DVD extras, nothing that you won’t see if your ‘Live in Gdańsk’ has the concert DVD, don’t worry).

This will also be available in HD.

  1. Hi Fed.

Thanx for letting us know – great news! David will be performing ‘Astronomy Domine’, ‘Fat Old Sun’ and ‘This Heaven’.

Of course my question would be – do you know if he will play with his band from 2006?

    Bye
    Werner

[You’ll have to tune in to find out, sorry. – FEd]

  2. Interesting news, FEd. I expect that David will be chatting with Jools at the piano a little to promote Gdansk as well, like when he promoted Echoes back in 2001.

  3. That’s great news! Later with Jools has to be the best music show on TV. I love the eclectic mix that you get. I’m pleased the doc is going to be on too as I thought the RTN was good enough to show on prime time. 🙂

My thoughts today are with those in Loisiana who are on the run from Gustav and also those (like our very own ‘Bev’) who are on their way in to help! I applaud you.

  4. Look forward to the Jools show. Also the cinema premier here in the States!

Hunkering down in Baton Rouge. May have to leave out of here post haste.

    Cheers everybody!

[Look after yourself, Bev. – FEd]

  5. Hi FEd and all

Great news that David is on probably the best music show again, since the Old Grey Whistle Test.

I have to admit I have been waiting for David to reappear on Jools’ show, I will be sending smoke signals to friends and family.

    Regards
    Damian

  6. Very good. I would very much like to see another go at Fat Old Sun … that was probably the most unexpected pleasure of RTN for me.

By the way, I don’t believe there is a review of Live in Gdansk in the latest Q magazine unless I’m being very stupid … and as there is a 50 page special on Oasis, you might expect some grumpy entries from readers reading every page to try and find it!

Still F’ed, you’d like what Noel Gallagher has to say about Radiohead, I’m sure.

    [Oh dear. – FEd]

  7. I hope BBC America carries “Later…” I would love to see that performance.

Also, I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your selection for the picture for this entry. It is one of my favorites from the Galleries.

Hope you had a lovely weekend!

    [A nice one, isn’t it? – FEd]

  8. thanks for the info. 😀

can’t wait to see this. i love jools and also a nice pick of songs.

  9. Thanks for the updates, though the show is only available in UK; I do hope that we from the US may catch the show some time in the future on TV.

FEd, if I understand it correctly, does it mean people from US might catch David’s performances on MySpace?

[It’s worth looking, because videos are sometimes added, but there’s no guarantee that footage from the programme will be added. – FEd]

  10. Hi all, I’ve found this interview yesterday (click my name).

It’s in Italian, hope someone can translate in English, I’m not so good.

    ciao
    emi

[Thanks for that. There’ll be interviews appearing all over the place in the run up to the release of ‘Live in Gdańsk’. If you spot any, do let us know (particularly if they’re not in English). – FEd]

  11. Good Morning FEd,

Will we have a competition to win tickets for the taping of the Jools Holland show?

    Gary Hurley.
    London England.

    [No, sorry. – FEd]

  12. All my best wishes to those who are evacuating the New Orleans area ahead of that huricaine. May it unexpectedly fizzle out at sea, sparing the wonderful city that has still to recover from from the storm that hit three years ago (Katrina).

Happy Holiday to the rest of us in the US. I think of Labor Day as the anti-Republican holiday, and we need as much of that as we can get. If New Orleans’ levies had been well maintained, the tragedy of Katrina could have been prevented. If corporations and the wealthy were taxed at the rate of the middle class, there would have been plenty of money to maintain them.

    [Hear, hear. – FEd]

  13. I’d actually managed to get a couple of tickets to the previous ‘Later…..’ appearance by David, only for Health & Safety regs and insurance issues with the BBC to rear their head and find that the general public were not permitted to attend that particular recording!

Don’t suppose they’ll remember that and feel sorry for me, but might be worth an ask!

Frustrating weekend eh F’Ed…and how long is Torres going to be out for?

[Not long, hopefully. On the plus side, he won’t be able to play for Spain during this annoying international break. – FEd]

  14. Good to hear that David will be back on Jools’ programme – the best live music show these days… as Paul said, a nice song selection.

I still vividly remember seeing David live on an earlier Jools Holland music show (The Tube, in 1984, just before he kicked off the About Face tour). Jeepers – 24 years ago! Time flies doesn’t it?

In a slight break from all this Gdansk related activity (FEd – how do you manage to keep up with it all? Very impressive amount of things going on…) just a quick mention of something that plopped through my letterbox at the weekend, that I’m sure some people will be interested in.

The free Autumn 2008 brochure for the Cadogan Hall has a nice picture of David on page 2, deep in concentration during the Atom Heart Mother performance there in mid-June…

  15. hey FEd

roughly two weeks ago i pre ordered the 5 disk version from amazon.co.uk and just this saturday i got a e-mail from them saying ”the supplier has changed the release date.”

what does this mean? is it a mistake and should i just ignore it? please don’t tell us it’s been delayed again.

    [I’ve heard nothing about a delay… – FEd]

  16. The news is just getting better and I hope that one day they will show the Jools Holland show over here in the states on BBC America.

Fed I have just one question about the CD/DVD set that David is releasing and I was wondering if it will be possible to get the DVD only one day?

Plus again thanks for keeping us informed about all the great news.

    Take care,
    Thomas

[I don’t think so, Thomas. As Elvis said, it’s now or never. – FEd]

  17. I’m surprised you’ve let us know straight off what David intends playing. You usually string us along with having us guess or divulging songs in dribs & drabs.

If the full one-hour show is taped separately to the live show, this implies he’ll be performing one of the songs twice?

    Look forward to it
    Dave

    [Beats me. – FEd]

  18. The Later site on BBC.co.uk, as I remember would carry video highlights of the show and extras such as interviews and rehearsal stuff. Not sure if this was restricted for overseas viewers as I am in England anyway!

I am sure it will all make its way onto YouTube eventually.

As mentioned, Later… is an awesome music show. I have been recently collecting the DVDs, at least one of which features DG’s performances.

On a similar note, the Abbey Road series of DVDs is very good, again footage of DG worth checking out.

Thoughts are with our American cousins…

    Darran

  19. [I’ve heard nothing about a delay… – FEd]

that’s good to know because that e-mail got me really worried

[As we discussed in the chatroom earlier today, Amazon had the date wrong to start with (they hadn’t acknowledged the delay of one week due to the DG Strat), so that could explain it. – FEd]

  20. Hey, that’s great. Always feels special to watch David Gilmour on TV.

Any chance of a little reminder closer to the time?

[Of course. One other thing regarding the magazines mentioned recently: reviews will be appearing in music monthlies over the next two issues, not necessarily the latest issue. Please flick through the magazine first to be sure. – FEd]

  21. It’s been a while since I’ve posted on here, but I saw this video recently and had to know if the Floyd actually approved the use of this sample. […]

[I’ve no idea, sorry. It was before my time and that of the people representing David now, so I really couldn’t tell you. – FEd]

  22. Fed,

I know there’s a lot of talk about the complexity of this release, but to be truthful we have been given an opportunity to make our own choice about which package to purchase. I’m just glad that a collectors deluxe set is being put out for the likes of us.

We’re building a new house at the moment and I only wish the sound system was in place for this release. I’m determined that Live in Gdansk will be the first album played when it is ready.

    Wilko

[It’ll be worth waiting for. – FEd]

  23. Well, I have to say it: I never heard of this show, because I live in Brazil.

So, I’m looking forward when these songs appear in your MySpace (strange inserted words, no?). This Heaven is so fabulous, it is the one of my favourites from On An Island.

Hey FEd, how about a 2000 best albums? Will work?
If this topic came here, Fear of A Blank Planet will be on my list as On An Island too.

    Andrey.

[I’m sorry to say that you’re too late for that one. Please click your name to see what others chose as their favourites from the present decade. – FEd]

  24. I’ve written it on my calendar.

I agree with Darran and everyone else who says that this is one of the best music shows on TV. I’m really looking forward to it.

  25. [roughly two weeks ago i pre-ordered the 5 disk version from amazon.co.uk and just this saturday i got a e-mail from them saying ”the supplier has changed the release date.” – david]

I also pre-ordered from Amazon but I didn’t get an e-mail like this.

  26. [I’m sorry to say that you’re too late for that one. Please click your name to see what others chose as their favourites from the present decade. – FEd]

    =(

    Well, I’m really late! XD

    What is next? Seventies?

    [Yes, that’s right. – FEd]

  27. Hi Fed,

Astronomy Domine: Can’t get enough of Syd Barrett’s classic song of years gone by. But wow, that’s great news on the other songs in the lineup as well. Shivers going up my spine.

    Take care everybody.
