iTunes videos

David on stage in Gdańsk, Poland (26 August 2006)

I told you yesterday how you can get ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’ free at iTunes (by downloading the live album in its entirety, you cannot download it individually).

Well, if you download the live album and the 12 live tracks (including ‘Wot’s…’) from iTunes, you’ll also get four free videos: ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ and ‘Wish You Were Here’ (from Gdańsk), ‘Wearing The Inside Out’ (from the Mermaid Theatre) and ‘Take A Breath’ (from Abbey Road).

Unless you’re in Europe, that is, in which case you won’t get the Gdańsk footage, just ‘Wearing The Inside Out’ and ‘Take A Breath’. (Don’t ask…)

If you haven’t seen it yet, Amazon now has that ‘Comfortably Numb’ edit, and here’s an improvement in quality from what you’ve already seen at YouTube.

Do be on the lookout for the latest editions of Mojo, Q and Uncut magazines, as they have album reviews. The latter also has a Q&A, apparently.

If you have been looking out for the videos mentioned previously, then you can stop looking at Borders for the time being, as theirs won’t be appearing for another week or two.

Oh, and here’s a link to help you find your nearest indie store, if you’re in the States.

  1. Refraining from spoilers…

I’ve decided that I’m not watching anymore videos or listening to any more tracks from Live in Gdansk. I love them of course, and have watched ‘A Great Day for Freedom’ more than I should admit, but I think too much being revealed spoils the thrill and excitement. I want to open a bottle of wine and watch the entire thing at once, but that’s just me.

I have not looked at the Comfortably Numb video, but I remember what it felt like.

[Quite right. (It’s me, too.) – FEd]

  2. thanks for the info there. this thing with what we get in europe is a bit odd but hey, it’s still a good deal and thanks for the links.

[I hope they’re useful, Paul. Love your e-mail address, by the way. – FEd]

  3. Let’s hope the Liverpool players get their copies first and realise what talent is….we need to play for the shirt!!!!!!!

[They made hard Dirk of it last night, didn’t they? (Don’t mind me, I’ve being doing the ‘Dirk’ thing all day.) – FEd]

  4. [Unless you’re in Europe, that is, in which case you won’t get the Gdańsk footage, just ‘Wearing The Inside Out’ and ‘Take A Breath’. (Don’t ask…) – FEd]

    OK I won’t ask, LOL!

  5. [Love your e-mail address, by the way. – FEd]

thanks very much. i have had this email address since 1999 as well. 🙂

i wonder when the album comes out if david will do a signing for it in london or something, that would be great.

  6. i have to agree with melissa, i don’t want to see any more videos either as it’ll just ruin the surprise. i have seen the videos of ‘the blue’, ‘a great day for freedom’ and ‘this heaven’ a few times but that’s it, i’m not watching any more videos.

(in fact, now that i think of it, if they do put a video of ‘echoes’ on there’s no way i’m going to ruin that surprise by watching it).

  7. The ‘indie’ stores probably don’t get as good a deal when buying their stock so it’s nice that they get to offer something a bit extra.

When you say ‘Europe’, is the UK included in that? We are ‘half in/half out’ with everything else. 😉

[Yes, the UK is included in that. – FEd]

  8. i recently watched the david gilmour dvd live at the royal albert hall and thought it was fantastic.

i am a great pink floyd fan and love the on an island album.

  9. Well, as one can clearly see from all this marketing-wizardry that is going on in the last few weeks the people at good old EMI finally have learned how to sell their product in our digital www-world. Let’s all hope this will save the company in the long term …

“It could be made into a monster
if we all pull together as a team.”

  10. A Finnish music magazine Rumba gave 3 out of 5 stars to the album. They wrote only good things about it, so don’t know why they gave only 3 stars.

Thank you for the latest info about the album. Seems a bit confusing at the moment, but I’ve got one question for you: If or when I buy the 5 disc version and the vinyl version, are there still some songs missing or is that all there is?

[You’d have everything with the deluxe and vinyl sets. – FEd]

  11. But why would anyone want to download the live album and the 12 live tracks?

They won’t get the DVDs or tour merchandise then.

[If there was just one version of ‘Live in Gdańsk’, that wouldn’t be enough. Two versions, probably still not enough. A bonus DVD would raise the question, “Why isn’t there new material?” No vinyl would be very unfair. No Blu-ray, I’m just waiting to hear, isn’t fair. Different/staggered release dates would be a cunning way to make the fans buy more than they really want. Now that there are several versions, all coming out on the same date (that’s the plan, don’t shoot me if it doesn’t work out), there’s too much choice and it’s confusing. I do personally agree with many of the points raised, but you have to admit that this is another example of being damned if you do and damned if you don’t. – FEd]

  12. The new Uncut magazine (October issue) has Floyd on the cover with a list of 30 celebs talking about one track. The sort of thing to read whilst winding down after work, it has an upbeat forward by David giving an overview of Floyd and discussing Shine On.

Worth seeking out to fill the scrapbook.

    [Thanks, Byron. – FEd]

  13. Free four videos! Wot a deal.

Time to toddle on over to iTunes. I might even talk to myself as I buy!

  14. [I want to open a bottle of wine and watch the entire thing at once. – Melissa]

    Me too !

With some Bloggers and David, Polly, Rick, Guy, Steve, Jon, Dick, Phil M., Phil T…. in the Ritzy Cinema, Brixton, London. 🙂

  15. Completely agree with Mel and Ernest…

I’m not watching anything until I get the Deluxe Box-Set in my stickies…

  16. [I’m not watching anything until I get the Deluxe Box-Set in my stickies… – Rudders]

And Rudders I am looking forward to the party. 😉

    Cheers, Howard

  17. Re: The ‘Dirk’ thing

‘Uh the deal’ was better, Fed!!!! 🙂

[Probably, but less amusing for me. (Not a bad draw, eh?) – FEd]

  18. […this is another example of being damned if you do and damned if you don’t. – FEd]

But why not just release one on vinyl and one on 3-CD with a bonus DVD?

Why not let whoever wants to download download the tracks individually?

[Maybe a triple-CD with DVD would be considered too expensive and some people would want a cheaper, more basic alternative. The accusation then would be that they don’t want a DVD, so shouldn’t have one forced upon them/shouldn’t have to pay extra for something that they never even wanted (as we’ve seen when discussing the DG Strat). It is impossible to please everyone. Besides, the prices are quite reasonable, aren’t they? The concert DVD alone could be selling for £15… – FEd]

  19. [(Not a bad draw, eh?) – FEd]

At least we are in with a shout now..we have the ability to win this again.

I think David should have released this on 2 CDs and that was it….I mean…we have so many different options here to suit all pockets/tastes and people still find fault! What would make them happy??

  20. Have you really only one brain, FEd? It must not be a lazy one…

[No, it’s not a lazy one. It needs more action, I think. – FEd]

  21. [Besides, the prices are quite reasonable, aren’t they? – FEd]

I think the prices are quite reasonable and at least the various formats are due to be released simultaneously, not like when we felt under pressure to buy another OAI CD just to get the LAIS DVD.

Buying it as a stand alone DVD was such a con, especially in a cheapo card slipcase.

[Well, to be carbon neutral, you would want to cut out as much plastic from the manufacturing process as possible… – FEd]

  22. [Buying it as a stand alone DVD was such a con, especially in a cheapo card slipcase. – JJ]

Some people just don`t get the point!

  23. Thanks a lot FEd for the Indie store finder, now more choices…

[I’ve been in touch with a few and will have details on who will ship worldwide – and how much they charge, of course – next week. I hope that helps. – FEd]

  24. I agree with the whole lot, no more videos for me. I’ll wait until it’s here to enjoy the show.

This is like teasing you for a movie, the previews just give away the momentum of the whole experience.

  25. CAPTION :

As our hero starts his set Dame Barbara Cartland shows her approval in the front row with a big clap.

  26. Re: The ‘Dirk’ thing

Seeing the draw I’d say we are in with a KUYT.

[As long as we don’t play like Dirks (jerks), as we have been doing, we’ll get through. – FEd]

  27. I only saw the Comfortably Numb video and I don’t want to videos anymore. It will be better at home with a glass of red wine, comfortably sat in my sofa.

Nevertheless, the Live in Gdansk phenomena is hard to understand and this iTunes news doesn’t help…

  28. [I’ve been in touch with a few and will have details on who will ship worldwide – and how much they charge, of course – next week. I hope that helps. – FEd]

That would be a big help. Thanks FEd! I’d think about getting one imported.

  29. I just had a chance to check out the link you posted for Indie Stores in the US. What a really cool site. But it is sad when you look through the list. Sad in the sense of how few of these great stores are really out there.

I look at NJ and all of the ones on the list are more in central and south Jersey. For NY, there isn’t even store listed in New York City. I know there are some little music shops in NY but those are not typically the ones that get new releases, they are the ones that just buy and sell used stuff.

The reality is that the internet is one way these stores stay alive as well as the absolute passion the owners of these stores have for music.

  30. hello, i have been listening to your guitar solo in marooned, this instrumental song takes me to a great plane.

i’m french and i just want to express my passion for pink floyd. i play the guitar, but i’m very very far from playing like you.

thank you for your great music,

  31. Ciao a tutti,

This is the right place to tell my opinion on iTunes.
    Nothing regarding DG, really.

Fed is right when he say that people are always complaining. I am on the side of those that at very beginning thought the multiple CD/DVD options were only a way to get money, more money out of people but clear reasoning makes me think that actually this means choice. And here comes iTunes.

I do hate iTunes. I hate the system, I hate the price, I hate the quality. The system first: you get a file, a train of bits, something with no physical essence and…it is not yours even! You cannot copy wherever you want. Well you can, but all the iTunes, iPod stuff is made to be one way only…

The price is simply absurd. It is song based 1 dollar (or 1 euro) a song. A train of bit… nothing! That should be cheaper. A real CD costs a little more but is something physical, with a cover and (third point) good musical quality.

I think that it is an intelligent way to make loads of money.

  32. FEd

Just noticed on that the album can now be downloaded including Wot’s… It can be downloaded individually also. I think it’s 67p.

Download whole album for 45p per track.

[That’s news to me, but good news… I think. Thanks, Steven. – FEd]

  33. On the topic of individual downloads, then just to inform you that will not be offering ‘Wot’s… Uh The Deal’ or ‘Echoes’ for single download, as previously listed. That was mistake.

These tracks cannot be purchased individually. You can only download them as part of a live double album download.

  34. Yes, like their mistake of showing that Atom Heart Mother was available as a single track and therefore single priced download.

Online music retail is clearly rocket science. 😉

  35. [. . . Atom Heart Mother . . . Online music retail is clearly rocket science. – Nate]

Set the controls for the heart of the sun then, eh?
