Gdańsk DVD

Zbigniew Preisner conducting the Polish Baltic Philharmonic in GdańskA bit more information about this ‘Live in Gdańsk’ thingy, then.

First, the release date is 15 22 September for Europe, 16 23 September for North America.

As you’d expect, it’s a double-album, but you’ll be able to get a copy with a bonus DVD, if you want it.

This DVD will have 114 minutes of concert footage from Gdańsk, plus a 36-minute documentary.

The concert footage includes all of ‘On an Island’ – this was performed with the Polish Baltic Philharmonic, conducted by Zbigniew Preisner – plus ‘Astronomy Domine’ and ‘Echoes’.

So, a live DVD, as many of you were hoping. What do you think about that?

More surprises over the weekend. Have a good one.

  1. Thanks FEd, great news again! Seems that with David’s releases you are always in for a treat and good surprises.

Now counting down to September …

    Have a nice weekend, everybody!

  2. Yes, Yes, Yes !!! Great news !!! Thanx !!

[You look happy, Pawel. Or are they double-chins? – FEd]

  3. Great news, FEd – and more surprises to come? Blimey…

    Have a good weekend, all.

  4. Good news, I’m just a little surprised that High Hopes, Great Day For Freedom and CN did not make it to the DVD, as they also had orchestra and in that sense have additional value to RTN.

But I’m still happy in the end it was On An Island tour. What am I looking forward the most? “A Pocketful Of Stones” of course.

This weekend couldn’t have started better and it looks quite intensive as NBA finals started not to mention Euro 2008 on Sunday.

    Have a wonderful time all.

  5. I’d say this is really great news. I also think other artists could take David as an example for how material should be released. Absolutely superb.

RTN was already mindblowing, this will be a phenomenal extra!

  6. What a great surprise!!!!! I´m so happy that it turns me for the first time to make a posting here.

Many many thanks to David!!!!! Especially that Astronomy Domine will be included :-)) :-)) :-))

BTW: It´s an excellent site, and FEd, you are doing a great job! Very often your comments put a smile on my face.

    [Thank you, Andreas. – FEd]

  7. Something wrong, 114 min?

On An Island – 55 min
    Echoes – 25 min
    Astronomy – 6 min

It is 86 min in total

So maybe it should be all songs with orchestra plus Astronomy Domine and Echoes – and in such a case I’m really more than happy.

[Tomasz, Tomasz, Tomasz… You’re too good. I didn’t think anyone would notice until much later. (Yes, I’m pulling your leg: ‘A Great Day For Freedom’, ‘Comfortably Numb’ and ‘High Hopes’ are also included on the DVD. Did you really think they’d been left out?) Now, let’s see who reads this before commenting and, secondly, how the fansites fare. (I knew I should have published this post at midnight instead…) – FEd]

  8. It was a long time between drinks but the professionalism with which David and his team have approached the last two years has been something to be seen to be believed.

Thanks David, you are making a lot of fans very very happy.

  9. Excellent news, along with the vinyl version. Look forward to the release with the dvd.

  10. “Behhhhhry inderezzzding….” The world stops for me September 15th….time to request the day off now.

More surprises to come? “Pleazzze sir, may I have some more?…”

    CAPTION 1:

    “WAIT-DON’T-MOVE!!! I found an ad for a used cow…”

    CAPTION 2:

“WAIT-DON’T-MOVE!!! Tomasz is right, it doesn’t add up…”

  11. Excellent news about the live DVD, and the whole album and 5 other tracks. 114 Minutes of bliss.

    Happy Days!
    Simon J

  12. Nice one!!! Spoilt rotten, we are. 🙂

    Have a nice weekend.

  13. Also, the date release is exactly one year on from the Ritzy premiere.

I guess the 15th of September is turning out to be A Great Day every year!

  14. Great news, but no Great Day For Freedom??? That’s a surprise.

    [Keep reading, Ben. – FEd]

  15. Good, good, good news, all of it! You usually keep the best news until last, so I can’t wait.

Didn’t you say there would be an update on the Glastonbury rumours involving DG today?

[No. I can give you my personal opinion, if you want that. – FEd]

  16. “Excellente… Monsieur Gilmour, with these releases, you’re really spoiling us.” 🙂

It is incredible to think that we will be getting what is practically a second full DVD from a fantastic tour.

I am extremely grateful as I didn’t see any of this tour in person and I regret not making that trip to Poland to see my favourite guitarist and composer perform together.

    Thank you very much. 🙂

  17. That sounds awesome!

Any chance to get the album and DVD copy in Israel? No one hardly brings music here…

[The same old record company issues still apply, I’m afraid. I can’t tell you what will be available – and where – just yet, and probably won’t be able to when September is here. I’m sure that Anthill could sell it, via this site, and ship it anywhere in the world.. if the price is right. – FEd]

  18. Great news indeed & thanks.

What with David performing Atom Heart Mother next weekend & thinking about the Glasonbury fiasco, I think it’s a good sign for us fans that the Gilmour machine may be thinking about flexing those magic fingers again.

I could also be cynical, but I don’t think David needs to promote the CD, he is too classy for that.

On the other hand, why shouldn’t he promote his work, without promotion? I doubt I would have got see many performances or enjoy the work of many artists.

    Have a good weekend Fed.

  19. Great to hear about the dvd, but what songs are on the cds FEd?

[All in good time, David. – FEd]

  20. [Keep reading, Ben. – FEd]

D’oh! Nice way to wind us up, FEd. :p

    Have a good weekend.

  21. Wow, what great news.

Only problem now is I find myself hoping for the end of summer! Not that we get much in the UK.

Wonder what you’ve got in store FEd for the customary competition. 😉

Have a great weekend FEd and friends and pleasant dreams whilst we think of September 15 / 16th !!!

  22. [All in good time, David. – FEd]

that’s ok, but the cds had BETTER have shine on you crazy diamond, echoes, comfortably numb and high hopes on them.

and another thing, NO cutting of guitar solos please.

[That’s right, you tell him. – FEd]

  23. That’s fantastic news about a the bonus DVD….exactly what I, and many others, had hoped for.

Thank you for listening to the views of the fans. I know we can be a hard bunch to keep happy, but it’s better that we’re able to spend our money on releases that are really worthwhile, rather than something that the record companies think we want to see or hear (and is often exactly the same stuff in some poncey new packaging….IMHO, of course!!!)

[Mine, too. Well said. – FEd]

  24. We’re not worthy …. we’re not worthy!!!

Just kidding, of course we are.

Wow, never thought for a moment it would be the complete concert on DVD. Methinks the powers that be have much more up their sleeve than they are letting on.

Nice teaser, FEd! Can’t wait to hear more …

[It would have been better had I published at midnight (UK), gone to bed, and let eight hours of puzzled comments build up, wouldn’t it? Oh well. I promised myself that I’d come clean at the first sign of suspicion. I just didn’t think it would come so soon. – FEd]

  25. Fed: well, I am very, very happy & I have very, very little double-chins too :-))

Tomasz: Świetna robota z tymi czasami !! [Tomasz: Well done, well done !!]

‘Comfortably Numb’ from Gdańsk is amazing, incredible, unbelievable etc. !! 🙂

  26. Before Tomasz pointed it out, I thought we were going to have a 40-minute rendition of Echoes or something.

Anyway, on the subject of songs for the album, hands up who thinks we may be in for ‘Blotto 2’?

Speaking of Blotto, it’s time for ‘Remember That Blotto’ (Pt. 1 of probably 1). On this day in 2007 ‘Time’ was revealed to be the third track on the DVD! Ah yes…

    [Oh dear. – FEd]

My wish comes true, a BONUS DVD – THANKS so much, DAVID!

A long time ago Guy Pratt said in an interview that he was invited by David and Polly and that they watched parts of the GDANSK film together. Since then I have been hoping for a release which now will happen.

This BLOG is like GOLD – for us FANS and also for DAVID to know what his fans really want! I think that he reads a lot here personally and this is GREAT!

    Thanks again for all
    – DAVID for the music and of course
    – FEd for the GREAT WORK on this BLOG!

Can`t wait for the LIVE CD/DVD and also the 5-LP-BOX-Set!

  28. all bow down before the feet of the great FE’d!!! 😉

have a fun weekend, enjoy the euro openings, picked holland for my replacement team

    take a breath, take a deep breath…

anyone know the odds for obama ending up jfk’d?

  29. If the Glastonbury rumour is correct, I’m just sorry for the young fans who might have experienced the pleasure of hearing David’s & some of the Floyd’s music for the first time.

I’m not sure what’s going on with Glastonbury these days, they seem to me to have rather an odd agenda.

  30. Thanks for the update Fed.

Just one question, is this double album 2 CDs or 3? I know double usually means two but Douglas Adams did a trilogy in 5 parts and Douglas and David were good friends.

From past experience aren’t concerts normally longer than 160 minutes, which is the most you can fit onto two CDs? Or will some tracks be left off the CD because they are on the DVD?

    If you think about it, 2 CDs = 160 minutes, 5 LPs = 200.

I reckon it could be a 3 CD job like The Who Live at the Royal Albert Hall. But then again I could be talking complete jibberish.

[You’ll have to wait and see, but there’s lots more to come. – FEd]

  31. Great news…

I seem to recall FED mentioning “at least 4 discs”.

I don’t suppose David could be persuaded to part with the rumoured ambient outtakes from the Division Bell sessions could he…?

  32. Amazing news! Can’t wait to see DVD. I hope I’ll be visible there. 🙂

  33. What a great Friday with this news!

How are you all? This is my last month here in Spain with all the exams at the university, unfortunately. I would like to attend Mr Gilmour’s performance in a few days but I can’t.

I’m excited to hear about the bonus DVD… can’t wait to watch it. Congratulations David.

    How are you Fed?

    Have a nice weekend everybody.

[I’m very well, thank you. Good luck with your exams. – FEd]

  34. Extraordinary !

I was imagining any bonus DVD to have a few songs on it, but nearly two hours !!! Including Echoes and Great Day For Freedom and a documentary ! This is quite simply beyond fantastic !

    Thanks !

  35. It sounds great.

I really don’t think we could have asked for much more.

  36. Syd Barrett music with symphony accompaniment. THAT would be really interesting!

Thanks for all this info you’re providing us. I simply cannot wait for this thing to arrive!

  37. Hello mates,

    …finally a real surprise!

I’m waiting for the d-day, but the best dream is a new tour and some new tracks, please…

Time is running so fast..and I want enjoy “my” David’s music.

Have a very nice weekend, all of you

  38. Thank you David for putting out for your fans…wait, that doesn’t sound quite right…

You know what I mean, thanks!!!!!!!!

  39. All excellent news regarding the CD version with the additional DVD footage. This sounds to be like the recent Muse album, HAARP, that had both the audio & video available from the same Wembley concert.

Only much much better, of course 🙂

I’m still mind-boggled about 5 LPs, so I await further news with great anticipation.

  40. What a perfect way to wake up!

I would have never asked for all this footage coming from Gdansk, I just didn’t think it possible! It’s way more than I was hoping for.

Good work figuring out the extra stuff, Tomasz. 🙂

Thank you, David, you are an exquisite artist. Thank you for the good news, Fed.

  41. Will the music cassette and VHS video set come out at the same time?
    Old gazzagary,
    London England.

  42. FED, you are the master of spreading great news! This is EXCELLENT! Just goes to show you how cool Gilmour is (and you too FED) – he listens to what his fans want…and then he delivers! Simply stunning.

I am excited about this new release, and will by the CD With DVD as well as the Vinyl version! Thanks FED, you all do such a fine job!!!!!

One question, will the DVD be available in BLU RAY or just a standard DVD?

[More on that soon. – FEd]

  43. Considering this time last year we didn’t think this would be possible, it’s not bad at all.

Why does David attract so many weirdos anyway?

  44. You know, I would have been happy with the DVD content even if I hadn’t kept reading on… but don’t tell David that.

  45. Great news. Just what I needed this morning.

Thank you very much, David. You are one of a kind and we love you.

Thanks for the good news FEd, have a good weekend.

[The same to you. – FEd]

  46. Well, David certainly knows how to deliver what his fans want. 114 minutes of footage, WHOA!!! That’s like the whole concert, save maybe Echoes?

Consider many people’s wishes fulfilled; as for me I’m still holding out hope for a little diddy whose initials are: OTTA.

    One can hope.

Thank you very much indeed, good night to you.

  47. I’m now busy on the 15th September!

Thanks for the news FEd- sounds absolutely brilliant. David is good to us- and your twitter status suggests there’s even more to come. I’m very happy!

Hope everyone has a good weekend.

  48. Fantastic news and much anticipated.

I’m hoping Wot’s ….Uh The Deal will be on there somewhere. Quality much unheard track!!!!

  49. Wonderful news to boost a dull Friday in the rat race.

    Pete – Coventry

  50. [Why does David attract so many weirdos anyway? – George Maciver]

And what exactly constitutes a weirdo, George?

[Oh dear, now you’ve done it. – FEd]

  51. Excellent news. The 3 or 4 minutes of Echoes that Guy played on his radio show last year sounded fantastic – so to hear AND see the lot and all OAI with orchestra too is wonderful.

Wot’s…Uh The Deal? Or is this being greedy?

    [Maybe. – FEd]

  52. Here’s wishing a pleasant weekend to all to go along with this delightful news.

  53. Thanks!!

    Great, Magnifico, Wunderschön, Fantastisch…

  54. Hi FEd,

that’s what I call a good start in the weekend… This is great news and I’m curious to see and hear these historical recordings.

I wonder if anyone at DG headquarters thought of offering new releases directly as a subscription, where you pay a monthly fee and get all recordings as soon as they are pressed. That would make it easier to produce new stuff since the purchasers are known and therefore the financial risk easier to calculate, even for small editions….

Hope to hear more news about the other goodies soon!

  55. Good stuff.

I also find it interesting how people start to pontificate on what will or will not be happening. It’s like a seed is planted to grow an oak tree and then the weeds pop up all around it and choke the sapling.

Looking forward to hearing more from the official source.

  56. What great news to start the weekend off. I can’t wait till September.

Fed, you have yourself a fantastic weekend, and David, you are the greatest!

    Many Thanks,
    Tomi Sue

  57. What a wonderful world …. :-)))

And a nice weekend to everyone,

  58. [And what exactly constitutes a weirdo, George? – Julie Davies]

    Weird people, of course.

  59. Wow, thanks for the great news Fed!

Expressed wishes really do come true – a documentary will be included – right on!

  60. Wow! Fantastic news!

You must get a real kick out of announcing these things to us, eh FEd?! You seem to have all the announcements planned out too…

Can’t wait until the next one. Thanks FEd, you regularly make my day with this Blog! 🙂

  61. Re: latest twitter

“Baby” ?? Have you been watching those Kojak re-runs again F’ed?

Consider me very satisfied, thank you.

A live DVD …. you can’t have too many of those, can you, and it underlines that this was an “event” more than just a great gig.

And more surprises yet .. F’ed you have become a mischievious bundle of fun just lately.

Some German colleagues lured me into a bit of Euro 2008 punditry … will you be shouting for the “Reds” of Espana or simply booing Portugal ?

[I always hope that Germany do well in major finals, actually. – FEd]

  62. Wow! Fantastic news. From all accounts, this was a fantastic show.

I am truly looking forward to this! Bravo, David!

    Nice weekend, all!

  63. Well, I’m smelling 3 (or 4) versions of “Live in Gdansk”:

    1. Double CD
    2. Double CD with Bonus DVD
    3. Triple CD (with Bonus DVD or not)

    [Not bad… – FEd]

  64. Thanks for the infomation FEd! This is great news!

I think that it is wonderful that David gives credence to what the true fans want. A lot of artists today don’t do that.

    Thanks David!

  65. Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve been here. I’ve been quite busy with work and getting ready for a race this weekend. Wish us luck!

This is great news for us all. ^^ Thanks FEd. September 16…it’s now marked on my calendar.

I can’t wait to hear what future blog post have to reveal about this release!

Diane (aka Kaida for the chatroom)

[Good luck for the weekend, Diane. – FEd]

  66. [George….none more stranger than me! – Paul Sexton]

Strange is okay Paul! Really! Loads of strange folks here! I love strange folks! I’m one myself! Did you notice all these exclamation marks??!!?? It’s the weird ones . . .

  67. This is brilliant news!

Absolutely cannot wait. This will be great.

  68. [Weird people, of course. – George Maciver]

Hmmm, two or three songs spring to mind:

    “…I’m a creep. I’m a weirdo…”

“People are strange, when you’re a stranger”

    but best of all

“Strangers passing in the street, by chance two separate glances meet, and I am you and what I see is me”

  69. Most exciting news I ever heard…Well, since I heard David was taking part in Atom Heart Mother..Haha!

Well. actually my heart is jumping here and there. 114 minutes isn’t a whole concert but I was looking forward to hearing the whole of On An Island, including Preisner’s conducting, and I always knew I would see it one day.

    Thanks for sharing the news.

  70. This will be a first day purchase, NO QUESTIONS ASKED!

The RTN DVD gave me a chance to see what I missed, and Gdansk, to hear DG backed by an orchestra, will be the price of admission. Unlike KISS and Metallica’s endeavors with orchestra (same with Deep Purple), DG’s performance with an orchestra will be perfect, as was ELP’s Works Live with Symphony Orchestra.

  71. I’m completely thrilled with the news of the dvd Gdansk footage and documentary;^} Any further speculating can be left to others — I’ll be happy with whatever David decides to release! This is going to be the highlight of the year for me, honestly!

George, I’m feeling extremely weird lately — is it that noticeable? Freaky …

Melissa and Tomasz, are you both smiling ear-to-ear?? I’m certain you are and I can hardly wait to share what you were lucky enough to experience in person.

    Peace ‘n’ love!

  72. GREAT NEWS!!!!

I am always up for video footage!

  73. CAPTION 3:

“WAIT-DON’T-MOVE!!! ‘Live in Gdańsk’ will have HOW many disks?…”

  74. Several days late to post, but any ideas on when it might be available in Japan?

[Not yet, sorry. As soon as I know more, I’ll let you know. – FEd]

  75. I had my second ‘DVD coincidence’ in two weeks on the announcement of this DVD. I use a postal DVD rental service so the exact order that I receive titles from my list of 47 is not set by any means.

The first was, I hired a movie called ‘Morvern Callar’ which stars Samantha Morton and took it with me to Scotland to watch. On the journey I discovered that it was filmed in Oban, where I was set to visit which is near the ‘Morvern’ peninsula which we also took a scenic drive through.

Then what next DVD should arrive in the post while reading about David’s latest DVD release? The 1984 film from Poland, ‘No End’ directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski which… wait for it.. was his first collaboration with Zbigniew Preisner.
