Ivor Novello Award

Breaking news: David has just been awarded a Lifetime Achievement award.

The 53rd Ivor Novello Awards were held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel this afternoon.

‘The Ivors’ recognise the best of Britain’s songwriting and composing talent – the only annual event to honour music writers, in fact.

Expect a photo or two just as soon as something materialises.

Well done, David. It’s very well deserved.

  1. Well deserved David. Life wouldn’t be the same without you and your poetic soul.

  2. Congratulations David!

Recognition is always a nice thing, even for the modest and extraordinarily talented Strat wielding legends 🙂

    Best,
    N

  3. Well done. I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more than David.

It’s going to be a long afternoon Fed. With all the congratulations, I think you might need to see a brain surgeon at the end of it all!

  4. Another prodigious award from the Welshman! Well done and henceforth you will be known as Dafydd Gillmour…

If you haven’t read about Ivor Novello’s background it’s colourful to say the least…

  5. i’m so happy for david. he really, really deserves this award. congrats david! 🙂

  6. What more can anyone say other than CONGRATULATIONS Mr Gilmour?

Well deserved if you ask me.

    Melanie

Congratulations on receiving this well-deserved award!

You have such a great talent — thank you for all you’ve contributed to music throughout the years!

I hope there will be many more in years to come.

    Peace ‘n’ love!
    Gabrielle

  10. Many congratulations and long overdue but don’t let the award title put you off continuing to write more quality music in the years to come.

A well deserved award to an outstanding writer.

  11. Well done, David. Should you feel the need to help my good self, I will forward all my details to Fed. I am free most Tuesday nights.

If I didnt have a reason to dislike John Terry, I do now!!!!

    Cheers
    Paul

  12. Great!

I suggest a toast to David with a good Italian novello wine. And I invite you all to join the toast.

    Congratulations!

    Lucia

  13. Congratulations David! for the Novello Award (must be an important thing) and for another prize given to you as member of Pink Floyd: the Polar Music-Price in Sweden.

    Click my name.

    Kind regards
    Herbert

  14. Congratulations David – very well deserved! And of course, it has come just 24 hours after the Polar Music Prize was awarded to Pink Floyd for the band’s achievements, too.

Will raise a glass (or two!) this evening to mark this prestigious award!

  15. Congratulations David!

    Very well done, indeed :))

Proper occasion to break open a bottle of something or other. Cheers!

  16. May I try myself in British understatement and say: Well done Mr. Gilmour!?

  17. I love that photo from Abbey Road on the Latest News page, my oldest son had it put on a mug filled with chocolate for me for Mother’s Day.

I found some nice photographs from today (click my name).

  18. WTG David, what great news, and that reward is so well deserved, as your spellbinding music is a strike of genius and one of a kind.

Congrats too for Pink Floyd winning the Polar prize!

Now, almost exactly 2 years after the fantastic RAH concerts, could you please award us fans with some new gigs?

  19. David,

Contrats on a very deserving award, and thank you for your gift.

    Mike J.

  20. Congratulations, David! Enough can’t be said that hasn’t already been said, I’m sure, but let me add my voices to the chorus crying ‘well deserved.’

“But all that sufferin’ was not to be compared with the glory that is to be. And I’m still carrying the gift you gave; it’s a part of me now, it’s been cherished and saved. It’ll be with me unto the grave and then unto eternity.”

Thank you for the gift of your music, David. It’s about time everyone else recognized you, too.

  21. I have always felt that the genius we know as David Gilmour’s biggest gift to us musically is his songwriting and composing talent. His playing is phenomenal as we all know, but the composition is timeless and brilliant.

Congratulations David, from a fan of yours for 40 years now!

    Bob Mitchell, Victoria, BC, Canada.

  22. Congratulations David for the Ivor Novello Award and the Polar Music Prize !!!

I love to hear such good news.

  23. I’m so happy for you, it’s the least for the man who found bliss in music. Congratulations!

    Piero

  24. Congratulations David! You truly do deserve it.

[I suggest a toast to David with a good Italian novello wine. And I invite you all to join the toast. – Lucia]

I’ll join you in that toast, Lucia!

    Cheers
    ~Erin

  25. Brilliant news!! Congratulations David, it’s well deserved! 🙂

  26. Well, it took them bloody long enough to recognise such an iconic and legendary talent. I’m sorry but if I were David I would tell them to get lost.

I don’t wish to offend anyone but it does anger me that someone like Amy Whingehouse gets one straight away and she has only written one album.

I’m sorry David but me and all your fans have held you in a higher esteem than any award could offer you from the beginning.

    [That’s a fair point. – FEd]

  27. Congratulaions David!

In honour, your music (and only your music), will be allowed to emit from my speakers for the next 3 days.

Thanks for a lifetime of pure listening pleasure. I welcome more if it so happens.

    John

  28. Well deserved of course. It’s great to see that David’s songwriting is recognised … fans of David and Pink Floyd know that great music needs a big soul … and that has often been David’s contribution.

And “In Rainbows” the best album also. If ony Bob had got “grizzled old poet”, quality would have truly swept the boards.

  29. Well done David. Thanks for the wonderous musical pictures you have given us. In your honour, a doobie, glass of beer and RTN.

    George

  30. Hi to FED, and congrats to David for his recent achievement award.

Pink Floyd is the greatest sounding band ever to hit the music scene and Mr. Gilmour I’m sure is proud, I know I am.

And the next opportunity for me to see David perform again will be my ultimate goal. 1975 seems like a long time ago, however that concert in Vancouver is #1 on my list of over 55 concerts that are still counting.

  31. Congratulations David Gilmour. You are simply the best 🙂

Hope you will make a new cd soon with guitar solos that top C-Numb, Marooned, A Great Day for Freedom and more 🙂

  32. Fed

This is plain old well deserved. Good on ya David mate!!!

    Wilko

  33. Congratulations David on this well deserved award.

I also raise my glass in your honor.

Thank you for all you have done for us musically.

    To your health,
    Amedeo

  34. Congratulations David, you truly deserve the recognition!

    A Toast to You

    Cheers,
    joefromCanada

  35. Uber congrats to David.

Can’t wait for pics, have not seen what he looks like since September with the RTN preview!!!

    Thanks FEd.

Hope all is well in DG land!!!

    Cheers
    Adrian J. Emond

  36. How wonderful for you David! Enjoy!

Lorriane, thanks for the pictures. I must say David and Polly look so lovely together and so happy!

    Barbara P

  37. Many Congratulations on this award. Hopefully there are many more to come in the future.

I’m glad he’s finally getting the recognition and honor that he deserves!

    Diane

  38. Awesome David! Very Very well deserved! I’ll join the toast too Lucia!

    Cheers
    Zeon

  39. CongratulationS David for Ivor Novello Award and for Polar Prize!

Thank you Lorraine for so many nice photographs.

A wonderful weekend to all of you
    Ina

  40. Could someone enlighten us to Ivor, not related to Ivor Wynn Stadium? Just kidding!

If I remember correctly, the Grosvenor Hotel is situated next to Victoria Station. In 1974, our High School Concert Band stayed there and was revisited in 1989? Or thereabouts with a friend travelling London, Amsterdam and Milan, Firenze too. Hint Pier????

Congratulations David, it’s comin’ ’round full circle, about time I say.

  41. Congratulations David. Must be a warm feeling to get such an Award for composing and song writing rather than the maybe tradditional types for guitar playing.

    Ian

  42. Not too shabby there, big guy! Well deserved and awarded too soon I say…may you qualify for another in thirty years!

Nice pics, thanks Lorraine. That Polly is quite easy on the eyes…

…did I say that out loud?

  43. Two amazing awards in one week! Wow! I’m happy to see that David is finally receiving the recognition he (and the Floyd) deserves.

    Congratulations David!

    Cheers,
    Nicholas

  44. Further confirmation, David, that you are truly a legend in your own lifetime.

    Paul

  45. It doesn’t get much better than this. Well done David.

All of your fans, I’m sure, are particularily proud of you. I sure am.

  46. [I don’t wish to offend anyone but it does anger me that someone like Amy Whingehouse gets one straight away and she has only written one album. – Damian]

I don’t wish to start a debate about Amy Winehouse but her debut 2003 album, ‘Frank’ was nominated for two BRIT awards, a Mercury Music Prize and won her first of three Ivor Novello Awards to date in 2004. I remember hearing her perform some songs live on the radio (solo with electric guitar) before that album was released and she was absolutely captivating.

David himself paid tribute to her at the award ceremony yesterday (click my name).

  47. Dear Mr.Gilmour,

many congratulations for this further important and very deserved award as an influential artist in the worldwide music landscape.

Thank you very much indeed for your music.

A standing ovation from your fans. Here in Friuli we toast you with a glass of Pinot Grigio in your honour.

    Goodbye/ciao
    Elisabetta

  48. Well deserved and most timely given his last few years work.

    Is the award ceremony broadcast?

    Peter

    [I don’t think so. – FEd]

  49. Wow I’m only noticing this now! (Thumbs up!)

Congratulations! Tantastic job! Indeed a well deserved award!

  50. VERY WELL DONE DAVID. VERY DESERVED – SHARE IT WITH POLLY.

    Steve.

  51. Congratulations on your very well-deserved award, David!!! ;^)

The “feeling: for “today” is “Wish You Were Here!!!” Enjoy!!!

  52. Yeah, & about time too!!!

It makes my skin crawl when so many lesser lights are rewarded before true talent.

Right, I’ll get back off the soapbox now!!

    Well Done, David!

  53. Wow! the pics ! (Thank you, FEd)

Where is that ‘Wub’ emoticon when you need it ?

    Michèle

  54. Polar Music Prize and an Ivor Novello Award!

David, you are an amazingly talented artist, songwriter and composer. Well done on this success and all future success.

As we say in Wales: Da Iawn Byt!

    Simon J
    VERY Happy Days!!!

  55. Great photos, Fed. It’s always nice to see David looking fit and happy!

  56. Finally, an award to recognize David Gilmour’s talent for all aspects… Cheers!

Congratulations David Gilmour, well deserved and thank you for your continued contribution to the music world.

  57. what lovely photos (in the next post, if you don’t follow)! david looks very happy to be receiving the award from robert… i hope they celebrated afterwards!

thanks for sharing the pics, fed.

a fab weekend to all. x

  58. Congratulations David!

You are a legend and a luminary in the industry. Thank you for your music.

  59. Thank you Mr Gilmour. Thank you for the pleasure you provided me.

Thank you for the music that you, Nick, Rick, Syd and Roger produced. It is so wonderful, especialy “ECHOES”. I can listen to it 1000 times without geting fed up. Amazing! I discover it every time.

You have done something that very few musicians have been able to do.

  60. I was in London yesterday afternoon, kicking my heels till I got to a gig in the evening.

I could have gone along and gatecrashed.

    Good pics though !

    Pete – Coventry

  61. Can we surmise that David and Amy Winehouse will do an album of duets? Didn’t think so. But, can you imagine what it’d do for both of their careers?

Seriously now: Congratulations David on this prestigious and well-deserved award. And thank you for a lifetime of your music. I love every note of it. (Well, I’m not too fond of Atomic Rooster. That aside, David’s work is a stellar catalog.)

  62. A little off topic/on topic news:

Q107 (radio station out of Toronto, Canada) will be having an all request Pink Floyd weekend, starting later today!

So, whaddya say we swamp the phones with calls just (ahem!) mentioning “I’m a blogger on David Gilmour’s site and I’d like to hear (fill in favorite Pink Floyd song)” A little shameless self promotion for the best website in town couldn’t hurt (eh, FEd?).

So, Rudders…. want to start us off? :O)

Have a great (long) weekend for people Stateside. All others, have an equally great weekend!

    Darren

[It would give Guy and Planet Rock a break, I’m sure. – FEd]

  63. There certainly have been many Lifetime Achievement awards for you Mr. Gilmour. I think I like the Glassman better than this one. I see your enjoying this holiday on earth very much…and making the most of it! That’s makes me smile, also seeing Mr. Wyatt on stage with you was cool. 8^) You certainly are an excellent example of a talented, kind and creative human being to many.

Best wishes to you, and perhaps, there will be many more to come. As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he, and there you are…

    Bravo!

  64. seems like tonight is pink floyd night on bbc4 – programmes kick off at 9.30pm with the pink floyd story, then we have another showing of classic albums, dark side of the moon, and finishing with syd barrett, crazy diamond.

sorry if this is a repost –

    have a good weekend.

[Topped off with some ‘Remember That Night’ on Sunday, don’t forget. – FEd]

  65. Congratulations David!!! Fantastic news and very well deserved.

I will also join in with the toast (a bit late).

    Again, Congratulations!!!!

  66. Been out of town and came back to find this wonderful news about our Mr. Gilmour.

An honor and a validation of the beautiful new work of On An Island and the later work done by David on Momentary and Division Bell. Performed, composed, produced etc, by our favorite. As well as all of the works that proceeded these.

So here’s to David and his award. Richly deserved. He must indeed be a happy man.

    All my best,
    Jan

  67. So how does someone get an indirect contact to another indirect someone that can actually get a direct message or request for a small time consideration to a someone on the Gilmore staff?

If there is an idea, movie script, or anything of importance that Mr. Gilmore might be interested in, how does someone navigate to get the staff’s attention without being deleted as a waste of time?

[Well, you could start by getting David’s name right… – FEd]
