Photo of the month

Angelo and David at Abbey Road Studios

My favourite fan photo for this month is this one, sent in by Angelo.

When everyone was still trying to get over the shock of hearing that surprise ‘Echoes’ at the ‘Live from Abbey Road’ recording, what did David decide to do? Walk up those blue, blue steps to further surprise the Blog contest winners with a greeting, that’s what.

Thanks for sharing your moment with us, Angelo.

Have you got a favourite snap to show off? It can be your pet hamster gnawing on your ‘On An Island’ songbook, or your crazy Gran posing with your pimped-up guitar; as long as it’s vaguely relevant to David, we’d love to see it. Simply get it online, making sure you include its URL with your comment.

Many more of your photos, and artwork, to come.

The chatroom will be open tomorrow from 13:00 (UK), if you’re interested.

  1. Terrific choice, Fed.

I really like this picture, because I know that Angelo and Tomasz must have felt extremely privileged by the invitation, for both made such a grand effort to be there. I’m pleased that David was kind enough to greet them. That was a very cool move, David.

Outside it’s a beautiful day, today. The birdies are busy singing, the dogwood and redbud trees are bloomed in their full glory. My lilacs have come alive and have sweetened the air, so I’m off to wash down my front porch and bask in the sunshine.

Hope to see you all tomorrow at the chatroom. I think it’s high time we have an ‘Echoes’ party.

  2. I’m new to the blog but have been a Pink Floyd and David Gilmour fan since birth and I have been recently writing six short films, each about or using my favorite Floyd songs.

After production however, I know I would have to pay royalties to submit the films to festivals around the world and as a film student, money isn’t exactly my forte.

Although I wish David Gilmour would come down to New York and pardon my not-yet copy rights violation with brandished shield and sword, I understand the law quite clearly. I’m wondering what could be the best way and the cheapest way to go about it this. Perhaps pay the royalties? Or perhaps use my own music and simply base the movies after them?

I guess I’m just thinking aloud and taking up blog space, but if anyone has any opinions or knowledge they’d like to share, please write me.

    Sincerely,
    Pedro

[Use your own music. Definitely. It’s less hassle. Good luck, Pedro. – FEd]

  3. As someone who creates graphic art work and someone who loves the music of Pink Floyd, including Roger, Rick, Syd and Dave solo material, I find I am constantly inspired by the music when working on ideas.

I am a bit hesitant to actually show this… my sincerest hope is that nobody (Dave???) gets offended and feels that any sort of legal action is deemed necessary. This is a “signature” for a board I am on. Its purpose is to have an image that reflects who I am and things I like. I chose to make this a bit deeper than your average graphic art piece… only a serious Floyd fan will actually understand it…

Please understand, no money is made from this or any work like this… they are merely for fun…

[Thanks for sharing it. – FEd]

  4. Awwww… I remember meeting both of those very nice gentlemen in that picture on that day.

A laminated copy of that photograph has adorned my fridge door ever since – don’t ask! It makes me smile every time I look at it, the expression on Angelo’s face says it all 🙂

  5. Hi Fed

I hope you’re fit and well. As you can see I’m now back on line, up and running. I’ve had some problems, but not an inch of the bother you had. Sorry to bring back painful memories.

I really wish I had some pics to send you, the best ones are in my head going back 29 years.

I can still see myself waiting in anticipation at Earls Court for The Wall, then some 26 years later (Manchester, OAI), my music hero still going strong.

Thanks for the memories and wonderful flashbacks David.

    Damian.

  6. It’s great to see all these tour dates and events revisited. Can’t wait to get to the Royal Albert Hall shows.

It’s great to see when fans get a chance to meet David Gilmour, to shake hands and take a picture with him.

Oh By The Way: the blog is looking great!

    [Thanks very much. – FEd]

  7. Hey Angelo

Your kid-in-a-candy-store smile reveals all about how you must have been feeling at this moment, you lucky irregular you!… And to boot, judging by our David’s smile, he seems to be equally enjoying your company as well.

Your dedication makes this great shot very deserving. I like it a lot!

  8. I love it. That photo was taken on my birthday, 29th of August, so I’m so happy Angelo enjoyed that day.

One mention to David. He didnt have to go and meet the people on the balcony, but he did, and that’s what makes him special.

    Happy Days,
    Si

  9. I’ll get a link up here soon enough.

Great photo. I must say you are pretty lucky Angelo.

    Cheers BLOGGERS

  10. Well, well…sprinkle me with Fairy Dust!!! This was THE highlight of a whole series of highlights from my adventures on the OAI Tour. Just when I thought I was out, Tomasz pulls me back in….to join him in London and four other Bloggers and their guests…(hey wait a minute, I wore that shirt today?–yes, I washed it)

To say it was a thrill to be there is a gross understatement, and to say it was the experience of a lifetime to meet David doesn’t do justice to how I felt either. So what did I say, David, when I met you? Well, inside I was somewhere between a Honeymooner’s “humina-humina-humina” and a Lou Costello asthma attack…

All I could muster was, “Thank you for everything”. A lifetime of adoration and appreciation summed up in four simple words. Wholly inadequate, but to the point nevertheless.

Thanks Fed for selecting my pic. It comes at a good time…

  11. CAPTION:

David backed away slowly as Angelo started muttering “I do, I do, I do believe in fairies…”

  12. That is such an outstanding memento of what I hear was a unique day.

Angelo, the epitome of ‘chuffed to bits’ in that photo.

Lorraine? Are all your photos of David laminated or is it just those that feature Angelo? 😉

  13. Ummm…that happy face on Angelo… and that gentle smile on David…precious.

    Thanks for sharing.

  14. What a great pic, you lucky guy.

I had met Roger Waters and Nick Mason recently and my quick photo with them did not come out as pleasant as yours. Good stuff!

    Success favors the prepared…

  15. Very cool photo. See, there are advantages to being part of the Irregulars family.

Would have been nice to see this one before the RTN screening in NY. That way I would have recognized Angelo at the theatre.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

  16. Angelo,

Very nice picture. I would treasure that moment forever. Do you have that picture under lock and key?

Maybe sometime again in the near future we can meet again in Central Park. Hard to believe that was almost 1 year ago. How time does fly.

    Wendy

  17. to angelo: fab photo. i’m happy for you. it was nice of dg to meet the bloggers at abbey road.

to james mickelson: sorry to hear that your pic didn’t come out so well. 🙁

  18. Nice pic! Which one is David? 🙂

Thanks for sharing Angelo, and congratulations for controlling your face expression. I think I’d have had a very stupid smile!

    Lucia

  19. Wow. That is really awesome Angelo. A great photo to go along with an amazing experience.

It is great of David to take the time for his schedule do stuff like this for the irregulars. ^^ Fantastic.

Did other people get photos as well with David on that day?

    [They did. – FEd]

  20. [Are all your photos of David laminated or is it just those that feature Angelo? – Nate]

All of them Nate, and Page 123 of Phil Taylor’s book too – just to be on the safe side.

[Have a good time, Linda. – FEd]

  22. Great photo, Angelo. Yes, you do look like one happy chappie, indeed.

I did contemplate on sending FEd my picture of David and myself from the Abbey Road recording session but I thought pictures from inside Abbey Road studios were not allowed.

I will have to dig mine out and post it to FEd.

    Kind regards.

    Julie

[They weren’t, but how hard would you have kicked yourself, and perhaps others, if you hadn’t been able to get a photograph of your meeting with David? (And, as was the case throughout the tour, the photos taken during the performances were the ones that annoyed everyone.) – FEd]

  23. Great Photo Angelo.

I loved hearing the story of how he ended up there when Angelo visited my house a few months ago. It was awesome.. just to hear him tell it and the smile on his face.. It was like I was there. LOL.

  24. Yay Angelo! You have the happy/proud smile of a sweet little boy;^) I happen to know for a fact that you are one of the sweetest people in the loony bin.

Remember when everyone was leaving David’s On An Island set after Leno? I was looking around for a familiar Blogger to OMG with, saw you and gave you a big bear-hug? You have that effect on people — if not for the many people present that special night, David probably would have given you a big ole hug, too!

I’m happy you get to be the star today:) I hope you know you’ve been on my mind lately. Sad times, but happiness on the horizon!

    Peace ‘n’ love!
    Gabrielle

  25. Angelo, you do remind me a little bit of the cowardly lion;^) He is my favorite character in The Wizard of Oz.

Melissa, I want spring flowers instead of these cold, miserable showers. Today I actually spotted a couple of daffodils that felt brave enough to bloom in spite of the cold weather, so things are looking up I suppose!

Oh yes, an Echoes session sounds so very good! Maybe Monday? FEd, how ’bout it? Do you think you’d be up to some synchronized Echoes with the gang? Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it — we just have to make sure we use the Meddle version, not the one from “Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd”, right Angelo?

I must get my Kodak Theater memories posted over the weekend! I’ve been so freakin’ preoccupied of late.8^[

    Love y’all!
    Gabrielle

    [Maybe. – FEd]

  26. Hi Angelo

What an amazing situation, sitting in Abbey Road and watching David Gilmour and his band playing! And then David comes up to you as well!!

    Thanx for sharing the picture!

    bye
    Werner

  27. It’s great when a true fan gets to meet his hero. I’d say this fan said something like “Will you sign one of your captions for me, kind sir???”

    Well done Angelo.

  28. Boring Fans!

Why fans of Floyd are so boring?

Answer 1 – We don’t have good original videos of Golden Years.. (70/80). Imagine a video of Animals Tour…!!! Everything that we know are photos and pirate audios (low quality).

Answer 2 – After Live 8, many people on globe filled your heart with hope to see things, as for example: -David singing DOGS (unpublished) or Roger playing bass lines of Echoes, Rick on keyboards of Pigs, Have a Cigar… and other things never seen. Especially in Latin America (Pink Floyd never pass here).

But, we imagine it is so dificult for Dave to work with Roger.. Dave has a right for a quiet life with your family..

Sorry Fed for this, but Dave does know it?

[Oh, I’m sure he knows it. Hell, I’m sure we all know it. But, just in case he forgets, I’ve published your comment, along with the recent “Come to my country!” requests. They can remind him that, no matter what he does, it’s still never quite enough for some people. – FEd]

  29. Hi FEd,

Well here goes. Let me know if it works.

    […]

The other person was my guest, Sue. I am on David’s left.

    Best regards.

    Julie

[Works fine. Thanks for that. – FEd]

  30. Hello FED and ALL !!!

Fantastic shot, Angelo, I’d be inclined to say that I am impressed instead of envious. Nice to put a name to the face as it were. And as Veronica from Miami said, the smiles are just that …precious.

By and by, it gnawed at me whenever I kept watching the Venice clips in BBDW, something. Like I know I am in one of the camera shots. Then I finally saw it !! Stupid idiot I am, I’m not facing the camera shot.

It’s during the High Hopes soundcheck that Saturday afternoon. When you stop at 0:35:27 Chapter 8/28 When you zoom in 4 X and pan left, you will see me leaning up agaisnt the column behind the bearded, mustachioed fellow with the backpack. I remember him. He was st**** out of his gourd and sweating buckets. The guy to my left with the shades, well he and I had a couple of Peroni’s afterwards. I was fragged that day especially after Friday !! Plus, I was rather fatigued after jaunting around the Eastern Mediterranean…

  31. …As I stood there just listening it didn’t occur to me that we were being filmed until about two seconds when I spotted the camera guy when I started to look back to the stage, but that’s definitely me !!

Well, aside from all that I have been living with my 84 year old grandmother, whom I call Gram and my 62 year old mother. Both have cancer, my grandmothers’ is colon cancer and my mothers’ is lung cancer, both Stage IV and since my mother and I moved up here to take care of my grandmother, let’s just say that Life has taken a unique turn for testing our family mettle. I split my time between maintaining my relationship with Lisa who has stood right beside me in Hollywood and my family here in Hobe Sound. It’s difficult, but then again I’ve David Gilmour and RTN !!!! It works as a great cathartic tool !

Thank you again, David and Polly !!! The gift of Life is in your music ! Thank you !

    You too, FED.. : )

[Hang in there, mate. – FEd]

  32. Nice Photo!

I just finished watching the band’s performance on Live from Abbey Road (it was broadcast on Wednesday here in Canada). Very nice performances! That must have been just an amazing experience for Angelo and the rest.

  33. Angelo: you lucky luck dog.

    ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’

I’ll bet it took a while for that smile to disappear from your face. Great photo. Wish I could have been in your shoes that day. What a memory for you.

    Jan

  34. Great photo!

When can we hope to get a tour in the States by David? What an event that would be!

[Did you miss the last one, Rhonda? – FEd]

  35. Ah yeah! What an amazing day that was!!

Fun times, it was really great. I’ve never seen the other photos from that day so this is much appreciated.

Will there be more from this day too? Is it too late for me to send mine?

[There could well be more. Please send the URL for one of yours and we’ll see. – FEd]

  36. I’ve enjoyed reading the comments from everyone…I even chuckled at one or two…thanks for all of them.

RabidSoul, you are in my thoughts…
