'Live in Gdańsk'

Here’s a little something for the weekend.

David’s eagerly-anticipated live album, recorded in Poland in August 2006, will hopefully (well, come on, you know what record companies are like) be released in mid-September, and will be called ‘Live in Gdańsk’.

It’s still a work in progress, and things can still change, but there will still be a documentary included in some shape or form.

Your guesses as to its shape and form (‘Something about a live CD‘, 28 March) were great, by the way, so thanks for those.

More on that, and perhaps some other things besides, when the time is right.

Until then, have a good weekend.

  1. Thank you FED for another update on the Gdansk release. I hoped for the end of August to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of that great event but mid September is not too far from my personal target date.

    Have a wonderful weekend all,

    Tomasz

  2. You were a big tease in high school, weren’t you? 🙂

    Have a super weekend F*Ed.

  3. Thank you for the update FEd.

The release should be a good reason for a little Blog get-together somewhere.

Does September 6th at the Odeon suit everyone ? 😉

    Cheers,
    Ralph

  4. September?!

Here I go again, wishing my life away.

I wish I had some pictures or footage of my mom and I being taken to the Gdansk police department, in the back of a ‘Black Maria’. I could have shared them for a laugh, but not even Kodak could have captured that moment!

  5. Great News FEd! But still a long wait – but great things are worth waiting for!

Have a good weekend everyone, thanks.

  6. I’m from IRAN. I love your music…every day I listen to the music and the lyrics of PINK FLOYD…

HOW I WISH. HOW I WISH YOU WERE HERE..IN IRAN…

And by the way, my language is not good, sorry about that…

  7. I’m very much looking forward to the next release from the Master.

Have a good one, one & all.

  8. Sahar…

Don’t be embarrassed! Your English is far better than anyone’s Iranian on this Blog…

    Welcome 🙂

  9. Thanks for the info, FEd! Great news – I hope time to September will pass very quickly …

  10. Thanks for the update… I’m looking forward to it already FEd!

Hope you all have a good weekend!

  11. fed, you got me all excited! this is fab news.

    i can wait, i can wait…

a fab weekend to all. x

  12. Just the live CD would be great, but a bonus DVD would be amazing, especially if it had a documentary of some of the events leading up to the event.

I’m not sure that people understand how much Pink Floyd was revered in the countries that made up the former Soviet Union. When I visited the Ukraine, more than a few people asked me whether I had ever been to a PF concert and were very impressed (and envious and wistful) when I described them.

By the way, I think that Liverpool were lucky that a certain striker preferred to spend most of the night falling down, rather than, you know, striking. Maybe Carragher was too much for him. I’m dying to see what players are going to be chosen on the weekend and on Wednesday.

[Oh yes, he spent more time on his backside than on his feet, that one. He deserves an Oscar for his theatrics. Roll on Wednesday. – FEd]

  13. Hey FEd,

the hardcover is coming mid-September, the long awaited live record is coming mid-September… All good things come in threes, so what will be next?

Have a great weekend FEd and all bloggers here!

PS. Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I’d something more to say

  14. Hey FEd,

Great news! Thanks for the updates (and now ANOTHER notice to write on my calendar). I remember a recommendation of one blogger stating “a collection of great Gdansk tunes” as the title. I still get a chuckle out of that!

Knowing it’s coming from the Gilmour camp, we ALL know by now that we’ll be treated to a bevy of extras; a CD/DVD package that will set the standard for live CDs to come.

Sahar, your English seems to be MUCH better than mine!

    Have a great weekend all!
    Darren

  15. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

…..putting down the glass of wine and moving away from the computer now 🙂

  16. Greetings from Brazil for all!

I know that it was boring for you but I (and all the fans of South America) have some questions and maybe you know what I’m talking about.

Pink Floyd and Dave have a several number of fans here in the South America, we really felt so sad because Floyd never came here but we were very afraid to not have the chance to see Dave and Rick (will be great if Nick came too).

I know that the shows routine must be hard but we are waiting for this moment for so many time, we will felt like the Pink Floyd came here (with the three members that never visit our country it will be completely in separate ways).

Sorry for the comment asking this type of thing but we really are waiting for this moment for so long time and we knew that Dave knows the huge number of fans here in Brazil.

Thank you for the attention and sorry for my bad English 🙂

[No need to apologise, I hear you loud and clear. – FEd]

  17. Thanks for the good news FEd.

[The release should be a good reason for a little Blog get-together somewhere. Does September 6th at the Odeon suit everyone ?]

Very good idea, Ralph !!! If David (and the record company) can make it……

    Have a great weekend ALL.

    Stephanie

  18. Wonderful news FEd. Wonderful news indeed. I think it’s great that David does all this for his fans. And hats off to you for your great work on the blog.

I’m giving you both an “Ax Award” for excellence in Fan affairs (click my name).

    Have a great weekend!

    -Ax

    [Thanks very much. – FEd]

  19. Sorry it has been a while ALL. Caught this bug for a week, unusual, knocked me for a fruit loop.

    Sahar, hi dude.

Chelsea will have their hands full tomorrow so that should give the Fed an edge on Wed.? What a game last week eh?

Have a great weekend everyone. Coming Back To Life here!

  20. Oh, I can’t wait, my iPod will be so happy to play such beautiful music and give me the honor of listening….

    Thanks FEd.

    Have a great weekend “bloggers”

    Adrian

  21. The goodies keep on comin’….looking forward to that…

Rode my new bike to work today. Time to use that car a bit less and work off those chubby cheeks…that spare tire around my waist–I don’t need that either… The way food prices are going I’ll get an extra assist from inflation.

    Have a good weekend everyone!

  22. September, how exciting! I, like all of us here, can’t wait to see what all David and Company has in store for us. If it is just the live CD it will be enough but we are a greedy bunch, so we will take all we can get. It will be like Christmas in September.

Sahar you English was beautiful don’t worry.

Thanks for the good news Fed and I hope you have a great weekend.

    Barbara

  23. …So I’ll be pre-ordering my copy in February.

[Maybe. Love that cynicism, Dan. – FEd]

  24. fEd, the great one! Thanks for the heads-up.

This release will coincide with the 30th anniversary of his first solo album (which was released in May of 1978 in the UK and a month later in the U.S. of A). I saw some bits online and can’t wait. Especially Red Sky at Night with orchestra and Jon Carin playing lap steel. Also the wine glass intro to Shine On will be worth the price to buy the CD.

I hope for a four-LP box (most of DG’s solo discs were released on vinyl). Mid-September is perfect because I also have the new Genesis 1970-75 box to snag as well.

  25. Great news about the “cd” of Gdansk. As we found out last year these things are well worth waiting for and an evening at the Odeon again sounds a brilliant idea as well Ralph.

Somewhat off topic, we went to see a tribute band a couple of weeks ago. They were very good and if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery…

    Have a good week everyone.

  26. Can’t wait until that’s released. I wonder if it will be the whole show in it’s entirely, but I know you won’t tell us!

By the way, my birthday is coming up and I’d like to once again give the band an offer to play in my apartment for the occasion. Tell Marc Brickman that he may have to scale down the light show a bit.

    Matt

  28. ahmm.. hi!

i have a doubt and i didn’t know where to write so i hope not to importune in this blog, so excuse me if i did but i really need to know.

ahmm, is there any chance that pink floyd get together again?? and, just because they are so great, give a little tour passing by México perhaps???

i read something online about a possible reunion but it is not clear! well, at least not for me!

please if you got any info, could you mail me!! please-THX

[Sorry to disappoint you, but there are no plans for a Pink Floyd reunion (in any place, at any time). – FEd]

  29. Thanks, FEd – that’s really exciting!! : )

Been missing some good blogs here I can see. Life has been pretty hectic lately; my roommate’s brother has been missing for three weeks today and the family has begun talking about memorial/funeral arrangements, so my mind has been very scattered.

I took her to the Museum of Science and Industry to distract her for a few hours and, when in the Navy and historical submarine exhibit, they played submarine and other underwater music: the PING was, we swear, identical to the Pink Floyd PING.

It cheered us up a bit. : ) Well, a lot a bit.

[So sorry to hear what you must be going through, Jessica. – FEd]

  30. – Mid-September ? which year ? 😉

    – This week, we climbed up to the crater of Vesuvius, visited Ancient Pompeii (wow!), the Amalfitan Coast, Capri …

Wonderful ! but all that is nothing, compared to The Blog !

    Of course, I’m lying, don’t worry … 😉

    [Yeah, yeah… – FEd]

  31. It’s really great that David Gilmour honors the freedom fighters of the Lenin Shipyard, now, Gdańsk Shipyard. I must read more on the history there, it is very interesting stuff to me. I look forward to great DVD!

I’ve been personally arguing case after case in favor of California Industrial Worker Rights and have been undefeated in the courts so now many workers can breath a little easier.

When I was 20 years old I used to hand out buttons that read in big letters, “SOLIDARITY WORKS”. I managed to organize and maintain a solidarity of over 500 workers then. I’m 32 now and I currently represent over 500 coffee and bakery workers, most of them struggling emigrants who can barely speak the language, let alone understand their basic labor rights. It can be hard, exhausting, and dangerous work sometimes.

Now, it seems very difficult for me to find employment. It’s worth the struggle…I just can’t live in ignore-ance and witness abuse without blowing my damn whistle.

[Keep blowing, James. The b*stards can’t always win, even though they’ve done a pretty good job down the years of making it look as though they’re untouchable. – FEd]

  32. Is it me, or I am overjoyed by this news?

Thank you Mr. Gilmour for the opportunity of buying another CD.

    Two words… Happy Days!

    Simon J

  33. Hi FEd,

3sat, an Austrian-Swiss-German satellite broadcast station on ASTRA 19°, is airing “David Gilmour: Remember that night – Live at the Royal Albert Hall” on Thursday, 1:30pm this week…

    Best regards,

    Taki
    Bavaria

[Thanks for letting me know, Taki. – FEd]

  34. Great good news…finally something about this cd. I hope for more information not too long…set list, cover…But again only in September, nooooo! Hehehe, but I am waiting…

  35. Very Good News.

I’m curious to know how they will fit the “problems” happened in that concerts (Rick’s ‘Time’ lyrics lapse for example). Looking forward to hear ‘Then I Close My Eyes’ in that fantastic version (without Mr. Wyatt).

September will be a fab month, with new Studio album from Queen (+ Paul Rodgers) and a live album from David (and, humm, Rick).

By the way, what happened in Mr. Ferguson’s mind to put Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench? Saving the golden boy for Euro 2008? Should keep Nani on the team and add Sporting Lisbon wiz kid Miguel Veloso next season.

  36. Hi Fed.

Great News!! Hopefully more news will follow….

David and Polly were seen at Linda McCartney’s Photo exhibition last week! Always nice to hear from them!

    Bye
    Werner

  37. I know I am late on this but just dipping in to say ta for update, all updates welcome. I will look forward to September.

I do read even if I don’t post so often as once did.

    Ian Pearson

  38. Good! But I’ll do better buying it on the internet. I am not sure I can pronounce Gdańsk correctly, and it could become an embarassing dialogue between me and the shopkeeper!

    Happy Monday
    Lucia

[I had the same dilemma the other day, Lucia. So many Polish beers… Thank God they had San Miguel. (If anyone can tell me how to pronounce the most popular, I’d be very grateful.) – FEd]

  39. Mid-Sept estimate eh?

So, going on normal delayed releases by Floydian standards shall I save up for, say, March 09?

    [We’ll see. – FEd]

  40. Hi FEd!

[3sat, an Austrian-Swiss-German satellite broadcast station on ASTRA 19°]

A little update to Taki’s posting: it’s not only David’s concert that will be shown. 3sat starts at 6am cest with a near 24hrs Rock & Pop broadcast-session. More details on the 3sat homepage.

    Regards
    Herbert

[Thanks, Herbert. Sounds good. I’m glad that this one’s not for the UK or US, as usual. – FEd]

  41. [I had the same dilemma the other day, Lucia. So many Polish beers… Thank God they had San Miguel. (If anyone can tell me how to pronounce the most popular, I’d be very grateful.) – FEd]

Fed, I wasn’t sure if you meant Polish beer or not, but my 2 favorites were, Żywiec and Tyskie. I went off to a shop and bought several different brands, and the former two made the list. I took the cowards way and didn’t try to pronounce it, I just pointed and made a few incoherent noises.

Upon arriving at my hotel, I was very surprised to find a bottle of Polish vodka on each bed.

I’m not sure, but I think alcohol is very popular in Poland:)

I often wonder if David was really joking when he raised his mug and said it was Polish vodka. I don’t know what he was drinking, but in spite of his little cold, his voice sounded great that night.

I can still hear him alone, singing, ‘Shiiiiine on…you craaaaazy diamond….’, I can.

  42. Yipppe!

*Dances around the room and marks the calendar*

Some thing to look forward to in the coming year. Let’s hope it stays that way. Can’t wait to hear live versions of certain songs ^^. Hopefully Fat Old Sun and Coming Back to Life….as well as the new stuff from OAI.

    Cheers Everyone!
    Diane

  43. Fed

I’m really looking forward to this release. My 7 yo told me on the weekend that he’s a David Gilmour fan now and wants to go to a concert. He likes ‘On an Island’ and has asked for it to be put on his MP3 player.

Anyway I’ve got some sad news of my own – I’m 50 today (29th) and feeling a little lost. But this new release has made me feel a bit better.

    All the best Fed
    Wilko

[Happy Birthday, mate. Don’t be down about it. – FEd]

  44. I’m with Melissa on Polish beer. Just point and make a few incoherent noises. It works for me.

    Happy Birthday Charles.

  45. [Keep blowing, James. The b*stards can’t always win, even though they’ve done a pretty good job down the years of making it look as though they’re untouchable. – FEd]

I will not cease to blow my whistle. Although, I feel like I’m the only one doing so. It’s tough to deal with the retaliation and limited income I experience as a result of my victories for labor rights. I’m just glad that I’m young, without huge debts, or children, so I can afford to stand up for what is right. I’m also not a wage slave, to a living expense of gluttony, so I am again, a free man to do what is right.

    Thanks again!

  46. I was in Montreal a couple of years ago (I am from Phila) when a cab driver from the airport took us to the city. He said he was from Gdansk. Goosebumps ran down my spine when he told me he cut a deal with the gov. to leave Poland in 1981. He abandoned Lech Walesa and carries the guilt to this day.

All I could do was comfort him and tell him whatever he did fortified the cause.

Hopefully, he will see Gdansk through David’s Strat and realize his conscience is clear!

    Only David could do this!

  47. Hello FEd,

I’m thrilled to hear that yet another DVD/documentary is on its way to us. There was an inkling of how great the Gdansk concert was in the documentary on RTN and so it will be wonderful to share the music and event that so inspired this special release (with the great cover).

I know David and Polly are passionate about certain causes and charities — Crisis, for instance, but I marvel at how David’s music and the special anniversary concert in Poland dovetailed so perfectly.

Had David and Polly been immersed in social justice issues in that part of the world before the RTN tour?

Just curious and as always, in awe of the power of music and social change.

    Cheers,
    Lola from Maine

[I couldn’t say, sorry. To their great credit, they keep these things to themselves. – FEd]
