If you don’t already have the date jotted down somewhere, David’s new DVD, ‘Remember That Night’, is released on Monday 17 September in Europe, Tuesday 18 September everywhere else.

The chatroom will be opening very soon. It will be open until 2PM (UK time). We hope to see lots of you there.

Below are more of Phil Manzanera’s answers to your questions. Thank you to everyone who sent one in for consideration.

Speaking of questions, I hope you’ve all got one ready for David. I’ll be ready for them soon, so please keep twiddling your thumbs and making your question shorter, snappier and more interesting.

Everyone has an equal chance of their question being selected. I’ll be choosing the ones I like best and will keep the entry open for a week, so you’ll have plenty of time.

Just remember that it’s strictly one question per person. Send in a list of questions and all of them will be ignored.

I’ll be starting with the North American premiere’s Q&A on Monday.

I know you’re very keen to get your questions in, but please don’t send them until I ask for them.

Thank you for your patience.

As a musician, which would be more interesting for you: Gilmour plays Roxy Music, or Ferry sings Pink Floyd? (Dan)

Neither!

Describe David Gilmour in five words. (Victor)

No, this man deserves more than five words!

Do you subscribe to the current trend of reforming famous ‘older’ groups when they offer no new material? (Martin D)

From a punter’s point of view, I don’t mind, as most people just want to hear the old stuff. But, artistically, it’s always better to have a few new songs.

Have you ever replied to the fans through a blog/site before? (Elisabetta Corsi)

No.

Who named you El Magnifico? (Emilio)

Los Gilmoures.

  1. Los Gilmoures! Classic answer! I love Phil’s dry sense of humor!

Thank you, Phil, for the great answers to the chosen questions.

  3. Happy Birthday Melissa!!

So long as you’re not ‘doing a Matt’ on us 🙂

There once was a girl named Mel
On the DG blog she would dwell
    With a ‘smiley’ she’d sign (*_*)
    Her mouth just a line
    Our favourite division belle

Thanks for those answers Phil!! Oh and todays Name That Tune? – ‘Where We Start’

  4. Thank you,

Once again El Magnifico for Answers that provide both insight and humour (anyone would think he was a Dulwich College old boy or something !)

A Straw Boater hat in the summer for you then I guess young Philip !!

By the way Fed..is it ok to submit a question for Senor Los Gilmoures ALTHOUGH I will not be able to attend the film premiere (sob..sob..Im just a poor boy..blah de blah )

    happy days
    Martin_D

[Yes, anyone can ask a question. You don’t have to be at one of the cinemas. – Features Editor]

  5. phil, thank you so much for answering my question! i agree that five words isn’t enough for dg.

another cinema in the us?!?!?! i wish other countries around the world could be just as lucky… lucky enough to have just one cinema in their country even.

trying to think what songs dg used that guitar on… frédéric, was it only ‘this heaven’?

  6. Fat old sun! (if I continue telling the same song, there will be once I guess it, right?)

    Great answers from Phil!

    L!

  7. I’ll hazard a guess at “This Heaven,” for this Name That Tune.

Will there be any special merchandise available at Leicester Square, Fed?

    – James.

[We don’t know yet. – Features Editor]

  8. I’m going with ‘This Heaven,’ but Frederic beat me to the Les Paul observation….

Also, thanks to Phil for answering the questions. Truly a man of few words!

  9. Hi to everyone

I’m very happy to read the answer to one of my questions i’ve submitted to Mr.Manzanera.
    Thank you very much

By the way, i’m glad for the very lucky people spread in UK, DE, NL, US,Canada too….and their following expected get-together. Please let us know all the details about your meetings and your feelings.

And…about the ” only one question ” we could send in the next days, I think it’s absolutely the most difficult challenge for all the Bloggers: but the most important too!

    Good luck and ciao/Bye
    Elisabetta

  10. Not sure of the song but Richard’s profile definitely deserves to be carved into a mountain or minted on the back of a coin! 😛

  11. [Who named you El Magnifico? (Emilio) – Los Gilmoures.]

That’s the best one! I really couldn’t guess!

Lucia, come stai?! Fat Old Sun is played with a Telecaster, not a Les Paul 😉

  12. I would have to say “Where We Start”. I believe that is a nice fat Les Paul solo.

My memory seems to fail me from the RCMH show and what guitar he played…but hearing the solo on the front page clip, gave it away for me!

  13. This Heaven. I think David only uses that guitar on that particular song.

I haven’t posted in quite a while, how is everyone? I’ve been rather busy working, moving and sleeping so haven’t really been keeping up-to-date with all things internet. On the plus side, OAI has been keeping me going.

Just a random question that has absolutely nothing to do with anything: if you went into a restaurant and could have any dessert of your choosing, what would it be? I just need some ideas that’s all…

    Take care.

P.s sorry about spelling etc., i’m using a friend’s computer that has three major flaws: it’s French and therefore everything is in the wrong place; the ‘A’ button is missing; it’s not a Mac.

  14. Hi Fed,

I know this isn’t anything that you have any say in, but in reading through the lost of different cinemas for the premiere, I am surprised to see Ohio have that many places. Michigan has 2, Ohio has 5. Good for them, I guess.

Name that tune- I’m going with the This Heaven .

    Have a great day, all

    Mike

  15. [trying to think what songs dg used that guitar on… frédéric, was it only ‘this heaven’? – Victor]

Maybe he used it on other songs during the tour, but as far as I know, he only used the Les Paul for “This Heaven”.

“Where we start” (and “Then I close my eyes” at the begining of the tour) was played with a beautifull Gretsch Duo Jet.

  16. Wasn’t “where we start” done with a Gretsch duo jet?

I’ll finish there, my anorak needs picking up from the cleaners

  17. ‘This Heaven’ must be the tune o’ the day. I’ll admit to referencing the bonus dvd to confirm David playing the Les Paul on this song. Of course, that doesn’t mean he didn’t use it on another … hmmmm.

Happy Birthday to Melissa!! And a personalized limerick from Brian? Priceless!!

    Peace!
    Gabrielle
    Washington State

  18. I’m thinking this heaven and was quite pleased until I saw that so was everybody else.

    Good day to everyone.

  19. [Fat Old Sun is played with a Telecaster, not a Les Paul – GianLuca]

Oh, I don’t know how can be happened that I didn’t notice that!

Sto una meraviglia, grazie. E tu? Sempre nella città dei vizi? 😉

Sorry, I am a great fan of David’s way to play all his different guitars, but to be honest I am a donkey in guitars’ issues… Should I go again to sit down on the ground in an angle of the bathroom to feel ashamed or can you forgive my ignorance? I hope you are people with big hearts!

    L!

  20. Hmmmm…I’m gonna go with “This Heaven”…yay…questions will be done soon…anxiety…Happy B-day Mel…again…I love your poem Brian! Very intelligent! Anyways…happy days!

    K.C._drummer

  21. There once was a limerick from Brian
That was so good it just left me cryin’
    So jealous, I swear
    I must out do Kildare!
But until then I’ll just keep on tryin’

  22. Happy ‘rest of the week FEd & everyone’. I’m off to Spain for a few days to get my marriage papers and won’t be able to post! I’ll return a hombre casado!

  23. Ok, just looked at the DVD, my guess of “Take a Breath” is wrong….

I am rationing my Gilmour intake so that when the 6th september comes it will be really fresh for me, you (Fed) have just ruined that (but in a nice way)

I’m joining Lucia in the donkey farm for the confused.

  24. the gold top gibson only came out during ‘This Heaven’ so thats what its gotta be!!

  25. My guess for NTT is `Pocketful of stones`

To be honest I was watching how David played more than which guitar he was using, however it was still no good, I can`t play guitar anywhere near as good as he can!! Damn… a poor impovorished sparky I`ll remain!

    Happy Birthday Melissa.

    Cheers all.
    Adrian.

  26. I thought Pocketful, but This Heaven sounds good to me.

    Happy Birthday Sweet Melissa.

Phil, 5 words for me is “David is a guitar legend”.

  27. I am confident to name this tune: “This Heaven”.

Counting down, we have approximately one more month for the US premiere event of the new DVD “Remember That Night”! I can’t wait…

    Happy Thursday!

  28. [Happy ‘rest of the week FEd & everyone’. I’m off to Spain for a few days to get my marriage papers and won’t be able to post! I’ll return a hombre casado! – Brian_Kildare]

    great limerick Brian.

There was a young man called Brian
who lived in the same town as mine,
with a wave in the air
    he moved to Kildare
but now he is in Spain fryin.

Rgds Geoff Duffy ( Dublin )

  29. I would guess that the song is “This Heaven” Though DG did use his Black Strat on that one Aug.12,2006 in Venice and probably some other shows as well but, it’s usually the Gold Top L.P.

    (-:Tomi Sue:-)

  30. I actualy made it to the chat room yesterday for the first time in months & ended up talking to myself, it was empty! i guess i chose the wrong time.

  31. Yes Lucia always in the vices capital, but my only addiction is music and guitars, I don’t even smoke..!

So while you are sitting in a corner for punishment you’ll have to browse guitar books and diagrams and learn all the different brands, shapes, pickups configurations, etc. and you’ll be checked by FEd!

    Right?

[Sounds harsh, but fair. – Features Editor]

  32. [I actualy made it to the chat room yesterday for the first time in months & ended up talking to myself, it was empty! i guess i chose the wrong time ~ Graham Knight]

Graham, We all saw you but you couldnt see us.

F*Ed has installed a “cloaking” option but you need the coveted third password to engage it…

  33. With the new venues in the U.S. I hope Susan has somewhere closer to go instead of 2 1/2 hrs. drive.

  34. HHmmm my guess is “Where we start”

Sept is coming up on us fast. Glad to hear there is a new US venue. But Florida is too far for me 🙂

    Have a wonderful day everyone

    Renee B.
    California

  35. no offence to frank and susan, but i have to spend more than 2 1/2 hours on a train to get to the nearest cinema and you won’t hear me complaining about it!

there are 112 cinemas in the usa!!! that’s way more than there are in all the other countries put together!!!

i know plenty of dg fans who will miss out on this because they’d have to spend more than 2 1/2 hours on a plane and some serious $$$ to get anywhere near one of these cinemas. so spare a thought for our friends in brazil or australia, for example, before you start complaining. i think they would love to be given the chance to drive 2 1/2 hours for this.

if there are extra cinemas, i hope they are not in the usa.

  36. Happy Birthday Mel.

I hope everyone has a good weekend.

I will miss you all next week in the chat room for I am off on a vacation to my wife’s family reunion and then off to Gabrielle’s Barnfest. This will be a lot of fun. Just wish you all could be there at the Barnfest.

    Take Care,
    Thomas

PS If you stay in your Bathroom, Lucia. We would all miss you.

  37. TOTALLY off topic –

Has David ever played the old Gary Moore tune “Parisienne Ways”?

I am listening to Gary do it with Greg Lake right now and just wondered….I’d love to hear his version 🙂

  38. Dear FEd,& bloggers,

NAME THAT TUNE: I think it’s “Where we start” because of the “Les Paul Gold Top”.

Concerning the “RTN Theatrical premiere”, are there any french venues participating the event?

    I hope so !

    Thanx

    Patoch’ 🙂

[I’m sorry to say that there’s nothing happening in France. – Features Editor]

  39. Dom,

I’m a man who knows his puddings and I would nominate a tarte tatin with garlic icecream (believe me)

  40. The guitar definitely gives it away: This Heaven.

Speaking of guitars, Fed do you think we might get a few more details soon about the David Gilmour Signature Stratocaster? Thanks

    -K

[When we have details to share, we’ll share. There are still discussions taking place, so we can’t confirm anything just yet. – Features Editor]

  41. Hi FEd,

    How was your week?

Are you prepared for the onslaught of stupid questions, next week? (My heart goes out to you.)

Have a lovely weekend. (Get plenty of rest!)

    Penny

[Stupid questions? Here? I don’t believe that. I’m expecting there to be lots of good ones, yet I’m also realistic enough to know – because many people simply do not read thoroughly – that some will send in more than one question. Others will send in their question one day and expect me to change the wording, or replace it with another, the next. I think there will be a lot of huffing and puffing next week when these people are told that it’s just too bad. So the message is this: Get it right first time. You’ve had several weeks to think of your question, after all. – Features Editor]

  42. I think it’s ‘Where we Start’, but I’m not sure where it leads us.

    Melissa(*_*)

  43. [no offence to frank and susan, but i have to spend more than 2 1/2 hours on a train to get to the nearest cinema and you won’t hear me complaining about it! there are 112 cinemas in the usa!!! that’s way more than there are in all the other countries put together!!! i know plenty of dg fans who will miss out on this because they’d have to spend more than 2 1/2 hours on a plane and some serious $$$ to get anywhere near one of these cinemas. so spare a thought for our friends in brazil or australia, for example, before you start complaining. i think they would love to be given the chance to drive 2 1/2 hours for this. if there are extra cinemas, i hope they are not in the usa. – victor]

Hmmmm, as much as I prefer to be the quiet, don’t-start-a-ruckus Irregular I am feeling that I have to comment on this statement.

Victor, I believe that Frank was merely expressing his wish that Susan, who has spent many months in treatment for a very serious illness, could have the luxury (I know, spoiled americans) of being able to get to a cinema without the 2-1/2 hour drive.

I don’t think that Frank was ‘complaining’ on his behalf or ‘complaining’ on Susan’s behalf — merely expressing that, after all the hell that Susan’s been through in the last year, it would just be nice if she could go to a local cinema!! Get it? Just a kind thought. So give it a rest, okay?

I’ll be making an 8-10 hour round trip to see the premiere of Remember That Night. I’m not complaining either, merely making a statement. I feel lucky to have the opportunity to hear David’s live performance of the one song, the Q&A, and the 85 wonderful minutes of the dvd preview. Along with that, I’ll be meeting up with a fellow blogger who will be making a similar journey, and I’m very happy that David has provided another reason for a get-together in his honor, so to speak.

Sorry, to jump down your throat Victor, but sometimes you might want to give a little thought to what you’re saying and what is motivating it. Your snide, thoughtless comment that “if there are extra cinemas, i hope they are not in the usa” makes me wonder what is really bothering you.

I thought we were all here because of our shared love of David Gilmour’s music and the magic that it brings to our lives. I don’t think that your disrespectful comment reflects what David, his music, or the vibe of this site is all about.

I would like to extend apologizes to Susan and Frank on your behalf Victor. I’d like to think that you were just in a pissy mood and meant no disrespect to our friends.

Sorry FEd if I’ve over-stepped my bounds — I’ll drag my soap-box out of the room now …

Peace and love to you ALL!
    Gabrielle
    Washington State

[Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and I’m happy that you’ve addressed the balance somewhat, but I have to say that I don’t think Victor’s comments were anywhere near as ‘personal’ as you’ve clearly interpreted them (and they certainly didn’t strike me as being “snide”). – Features Editor]

  44. Hi Fed, i looked for pre-order of the DVD Remember That Night in stores in Brazil and the date of release in the stores for the DVD is tuesday 02 October. Is really correct? (Brazil, Brazil,Brazil…)

    Thanks…

[I’ll find out for you, Marcos. – Features Editor]

  45. Good point Victor, others can’t see this show around the world.

There’s probably a reason too. Who knows?

  46. Looking at the Name That Tune picture, it immediately popped out to me that David only played the gold Les Paul on at most two songs, but I sure couldn’t remember which ones they were.

So that started a few hours of web research on David’s equipment, which if course is a great way to blow an entire afternoon.

What I stumbled across was something I hadn’t seen before, the company that made the Division Bell tour PA system as well as the OAI tour PA. They have a great article on David’s PA setup with some great quotes from Colin Norfield, David’s sound mixer for the OAI tour and Roger Searle, the production manager.

The best part of the whole article is when Searle says, “We’ve had great sound reviews not only in the mainstream press but also the fan sites, which I’ve grown to take notice of because they are the consumers and their opinions are extremely valid.” At the end of the article they use a few quotes from the blog after the April Oakland shows.

“Both shows were brilliantly mixed; the sound was excellent from my seats both on the floor and in the balcony.” – Posted by: David Warner at April 19, 2006 08:05 PM

“The band sounded tight, tight, TIGHT. David was in top form; people near me were commenting on his ‘bends’ and ‘sustain’. The sound quality was crystal clear.” – Posted by: Jason at April 20, 2006 09:09 AM

Click my name for the entire article.

I never did find any definitive or even speculative info on the Les Paul songs from the tour. So I’ll just be a lemming and go with the consensus choice, ‘This Heaven.’

[You need to include the link… – Features Editor]

  47. Enjoy Gabrielle’s Barnfest! I am sure it will be fantastic.

And please, don’t forget go have a toast in name of the absent bloggers!

    Enjoy!

    L!

  48. Pretty cool! I’d almost forgotten having submitted a question for Phil, but I immediately recognized it.

So, Phil, thanks for answering my question, even if that answer consists of just one word.

As for “Name That Tune,” I’d say this is either Echoes or Comfortably Numb.

  49. thanks fed. i wasn’t being personal. i had no idea. i was just stating facts. america always gets more than everyone else and it never seems to be enough for some americans.

i think coming on here and hoping for more, when you already have more than everyone, is snide and thoughtless because there are people all over the world reading this who do not know about the personal lives of a few blog irregulars.

sorry, but we are here for david and his music. we don’t need to know about your private life.

susan, i’m sorry for you and didn’t mean to be hurtful. i hope you will see this show.

but i’m sure you understand why i say that if there are extra cinemas then i hope they are somewhere for other fans to attend. just one cinema in rio or tokyo or moscow or paris would be amazing. that would be better than one more cinema in america.

gabrielle, that’s all i was saying. read my comment again and then read your comment to me. who is in a pissy mood?

i’d like to apologise to everyone who will not be able to see ‘rtn’ in the cinema.

[And that’s the end of that. Thank you. – Features Editor]

  50. [no offence to frank and susan, but i have to spend more than 2 1/2 hours on a train to get to the nearest cinema and you won’t hear me complaining about it!]

    Victor,

I wouldn’t complain at all about the distance, except that it just isn’t possible for me with my current side-effects from cancer and chemotherapy. And if it weren’t for that, I’d be going 4 1/2 hours rather than 2 1/2 hours, just to meet up with my fellow bloggers.

I am also happy to say that before my cancer was diagnosed, I was fortunate enough to see David Gilmour at Jay Leno as well as Gibson Universal, and it was worth every second of the 8-hour drive.

  51. [i looked for pre-order of the DVD Remember That Night in stores in Brazil and the date of release in the stores for the DVD is tuesday 02 October. Is really correct?]

[I’ll find out for you, Marcos. – Features Editor]

Thank you very much Fed. I’m waiting…thanks again!
