Guy on Planet Rock

April 2006: Luka's Taproom & Lounge, Oakland, California.

Tickets to the 111 104 US cinemas go on sale today.

Click here for the full list and contact the cinema’s Box Office directly, or you can order your tickets online.

Do let us know how you fare.

Seven US cinemas have a delayed on-sale date, due to ticket system changes. Therefore, you cannot purchase tickets from the following cinemas just yet:

Tinseltown, Colorado Springs, CO
Cinemark @ Seven Bridges, Woodridge, IL
Tinseltown, Louisville, KY
Cinemark Tulsa, Tulsa, OK
Cinemark Pittsburgh Mills, Pittsburg, PA
Cinemark 24 Jordan Crossing, West Jordan, UT
Tinseltown USA, Kenosha, WI

Apologies for the inconvenience. I’ll update you as soon as I can.

Guy Pratt, bass player on David’s ‘On an Island’ album/tour, as well as undisputed Comedic Genius of Pink Floyd, is guest hosting a show on Planet Rock this weekend (and another over the weekend of 18/19 August).

If you’ve seen Guy’s stand-up show, ‘My Bass and Other Animals’, or read his recently-published book of the same name, you’ll know that it’s going to be worth tuning in.

Fans in the UK with digital radios can search for ‘Planet Rock’. Alternatively, you can listen through your television set: channel 0110 on Sky, 924 on Virgin TV.

Best of all, you can listen online. As the chatroom will be open to blog and chat ‘Irregulars’* for both weekends, you could listen with us.

I’ll remind you that the August weekender is coming up a little closer to the time.

Guy’s show is on between 9PM and midnight (UK), Saturday and Sunday.

That’s all for yet another week. I’ll have more cinemas (hopefully), more from Phil Manzanera, more Name That Tune, more DVD screenshots, more sporadic chats and more of the usual assorted nonsense from Monday. Bet you can’t wait.

Have a good weekend… not least those fans who are meeting in Florida tomorrow.

* ‘Irregulars’ are those who contribute regularly to both blog and chatroom. The chatroom will not be open to everyone. Sorry to disappoint, but anyone can become an Irregular if they make the effort to join in. Details of chatroom opening times are clearly set out on the calendar. To be invited to lock-ins, such as this weekend’s, all you need to do is show up at a few of the scheduled chats and show that you can behave. Everyone is very welcome. Unfortunately, some people show up and prove that they cannot behave. This is why the chatroom, sadly, cannot be left open to everyone all weekend.

  1. i’ll be listening. i’ve got some friends coming over tomorrow night for drinks, so should be good.

i’m not a chat irregular, but hope i’m a blog irregular. i will make it to chat one of these days. 🙂

hope everyone has a fab weekend. x

  2. Cool! Another picture at Luka’s. I’ve been in 3 pictures now. You all should know me by my hair now. That big bald guy in the background is my friend Boomer, he went to the show with me.

Very excited about the tickets going on sale. It will be very fun to meet up with Irregulars and see the DVD on the big screen.

Thanks for all the nice birthday wishes, folks. It’s nice to know so many people care and think about me.

Happy Anniversary to David and Polly on Sunday. I hope you’ll have the chance to completely revel in each other =)

  4. Hi FEd,

The surgery went just fine. I was home by 1:30pm.

I’m hurting quite a bit, so I’m going to take some meds and try to get some sleep.

    Have a great weekend.

  13. Hey, it is a busy time of wishes!

Richard, Angelo, Erin and everyone who celebrates something special in these days, my best wish to you! Have fun in your celebrations. I am toasting with beer in your honour right now! Not so good as french champagne, but cold enough for refresh me from the hot italian summer.

Of course, a special best wish to David and Polly!

And for those who don’t celebrate anything special, I wish you a fantastic weekend!

Yeah…Guy Pratt on Planet Rock, I won’t miss it for all the tea in China.

FEd, I am not familiar with the Planet Rock Show, do you know more or less how long will the show run?

Hope we don’t get rained out at the Floridian gathering! By the way, Stockman, wish you were here…and thank you Raymond for all that you’ve done.

  16. Dear Polly and David!

Congratulations on the “happiest moment of your life”!!

13 years ago at 11,30am, on 29.07.1994 you were married. That was your day, your moment.

All the best to you both and your children! I wish you both a relaxed day of full togetherness!

    With best regards from Berlin

  17. Happy Birthday Rick! Many Happy Returns!!!

Happy Anniversary Polly and David! Many more to come.

  18. Hello from the mountains of North Carolina. It’s very beautiful here but today is rainy and cool so it’s a good time to check the blog and write in to say hello. And I’m very grateful for wireless internet.

Happy Anniversary to David and Polly! And Happy Birthday to my brother, Al!

    Love from the mountaintop,

  19. best wishes to richard, angelo, erin, & of course…

    david ‘n polly. cheers!

Due to unforseen circumstances The Gathering of South Florida Bloggers has been postponed.

It is postponed not cancelled altogether. Details will be forthcoming for another meet up.

Needless to say I am disappointed, disgruntled and even a little disenfranchised. A lot of effort goes into these things. Just because you build it does not mean they will come. Obviously.

FED, I have a more profound respect for you now, more so ever. Gabrielle, I hope yours goes better than mine. It took a lot of time and energy for me to put this together.

Thanks a lot fer nothing ! That’s directed to all those who “promised” to make it and let me down. God, this tidal wave is crushing !!

Utter disappointment. I had hoped to have given David and Polly an anniversary present of sorts, a birthday present for Richard and so forth.

Guess I will just raise my own glass tonight…………..

    This sucks.

However, there will be a get together sometime this upcoming week with Ulli and Mario. Since Veronica and Randy already live here I hope to meet them sometime real soon.

Well, I’m off now. Time for me to have a cry. F & F & more F’ing. I am emotionally exhausted now. I’m off to be behind the wall now…

[I’m very sorry, Raymond. – Features Editor]

  21. July 28th: Mr.Wright’s birthday

  22. July 29th: The Gilmours’ anniversary

Many wishes to Mr.David Gilmour and Polly of all the best for a very happy wedding anniversary.

Reading the Shakespeare’s Sonnets , i’d like to leave this (the nr.8) as a little thing dedicated to you:

“Music to hear, why hear’st thou music sadly?
Sweets with sweets war not, joy delights in joy:
Why lov’st thou that which thou receiv’st not gladly,
Or else receiv’st wih pleasure thine annoy?
If the true concord of well-tuned sounds,
by unions married, do offend thine ear,
They do but sweetly chide thee who confounds
In singleness the parts that thou shouldst bear.
Mark how one string, sweet husband to another.
Strikes each in each by mutual ordering,
Resembling sire and child and happy mother
Who, all in one, one pleasing note do sing:
Whose speechless song being many, seeming one,
Sings this to thee “Thou single wilt prove none”

    Have a very special day

  25. Hello everyone

Sorry I won’t be able to join you this weekend in the chat or be able to listen in to Guy’s show. Changing the world for the better, unfortunately, isn’t popular with the powers that think they be.

[Hope you can make the next one, George. – Features Editor]

  26. I feel bad for you Rabidsoul. Take time and sooner than you think your area will come round.

Best Wishes to Angelo and Family.

  27. Happy Birthday Richard!

Oh yeah had fun with you guys chatting while listening to Guy on Planet Rock….very amusing! Especially when “what do u want from me” came on….PARTAY! 😛 Anyways, cheers!

  28. I got mine last night for the Lexington, KY showing.

Who else here is going to that show? Maybe meet up, get “ready” to be blown away (YOU know whut I mean). I’ll be traveling about 160 miles one way, a day-trip.

Can’t effin’ wait. I missed David here last year, and I told myself any other live appearances, including the showing at the theaters here, I was NOT going to miss, come hell or high water (and the hell is upon me.)

[Hope you enjoy, James. It’s going to be great. – Features Editor]

  29. I have a lot of people to talk to today.

Erin, a very, very happy birthday to you dear friend!!!

To Angelo and his wife; a lot of love more to come and be good to each other, you surely deserve it! Congatulations!!!

To Richard Wright, stay as beautiful as you are and welcome this year with wisdom even if it is not always easy to get older; happy birhday MR.!!!

And to Polly and David, be very, very happy together with your beautiful children and don’t forget that we love you a lot down here; Congratulations! Félicitations et soyez heureux encore des dizaines d’années!!!

    Sylvie de Montréal

  30. First and foremost, I’d like to wish David and Polly a very happy anniversary ~ lucky number 13 ~ with many, many more to come:-)

And a happy anniversary to Angelo and his lovely Christine ~ another lucky 13!

Erin, you and your curly blond hair are becoming famous. Don’t let it go to your head (heh-heh)!

I missed Guy’s show today due to lots of mental static, hope to catch tomorrow’s though. I did catch bits and pieces of Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival and what a line-up! Guy, check out Jeff Beck’s bass player … she looks all of 14 years old and plays a mean bass too!

FEd, I hope you’re having a relaxing weekend. Sounds like you’re planning all kinds of fun for us this coming week again! Love it when you’re feisty!!

[Thank you. Nothing wrong with a bit of feistiness, is there? – Features Editor]

  31. I really enjoyed Guy’s show last night. It was made all the better by listening in while in the chat room.

Seemed rather odd to be playing ‘name that tune’ with music instead of pictures.

Now I must dash off to Argos via Homebase……….

[They got to you, too? – Features Editor]

  32. Happy Birthday to Mr Wright!

Nice to be with you all last night, that Guy was cool 🙂

  33. To Polly and David:

” On vous souhaite tout le bonheur du monde
    Pour aujourd’hui comme pour demain
    Que votre soleil éclaircisse l’ombre
    Qu’il brille d’amour au quotidien.

Tant de rêves à vivre jusqu’au bout
Sûrement plein de joies au rendez-vous
Libres de faire vos propres choix
De choisir quelle sera votre voie
    Et où celle-ci vous emmenera.

J’espère juste que vous prendrez le temps
    De profiter de chaque instant.

    … ”

    (french song from Sinsémilia)

  34. A warm wish for David and Polly for the happiest of anniversaries.

Hope your anniversary is filled with happiness, wonderful memories… and a lot of just-for-the-two-of you moments!

    Happy Celebrating!

  35. … and to Angelo and your better half:

A very happy anniversary to you both – congratulations!

  36. I did miss an hour of Guy Pratt’s show after realizing that it was a three hours program. Guy sure is an excellent DJ, his voice came in fabulous over the air – a good choice for Guy as the DJ since he is also a fine vocalist.

The show had excellent and good choices of music (Bruce Springstein, Crosby, Nash …) I can’t resist but sent the message to Planet Rock about Guy – we want him back for more on a regular basis.

I will definitely stay tuned for this evening for more.

My husband and I had a wonderful time with Ulli and her husband last night. We strolled down the beautiful town center, talked for hours, reminiscing, sharing stories and concerts experiences, our favorites songs of David Gilmour and Pink Floyd …we had a fabulous evening…sorry for those who didn’t make it.

  37. **Happy Anniversary Polly & David!** 13 years is a long time! Here’s to the next 13!

**Happy Birthday, Rick!** Our favorite keyboard player.

And Rabid Soul… that really sucks about the gathering. Sorry to hear it. I know you’ll have fun with Ulli & Mario, please send my best.

  38. why did I have 8pm in my head? lol you can see how I miss most things

9pm, will catch it tonight whatever happens, do like radio through my tv (small irony that radio has infact killed the video star, for one night 🙂

    Happy Birthday Richard Wright!

“hic it’s me n’ you hic against the world hic. I hic love you hic honest-hic-ly really love you hic you”

  39. Happy belated Birthday to Richard, and cheers to David and Polly. Hope you had a great weekend.

  42. Happy Anniversary David and Polly and Happy Birthday Rick!!

I’m such a happy camper on this Monday morning. Went to see a right Pratt on Saturday night in Dublins Iveagh Gardens! ‘My Bass And Other Animals’ was terrific!!! It was really great to see that side of Guy live and only 5 feet in front of me. He put on a great show and I’d recommend anyone who can to go see it.

We also got treated to some great familiar riffing as part of his show – Money, One of These Days and some classic rock and funk as well!! The guy is a legend!! It was refreshing to hear him tell his exploits of working with the likes of Robert Palmer, Crosby Stills & Nash, Madonna etc as well as his Floyd days!

The malfunctioning guitar amp also added to the comedy, unplanned as it was, it only added to Guys comedic set.

After the show, Guy was good enough to hang around and SIGN MY COPY OF HIS BOOK!!! and HAVE HIS PICTURE TAKEN WITH ME AND MY WIFE!!!!!! Thanks so much to Linda ‘Island Lady’ for taking the shot. Big failte to Linda!!!!! It was an unplanned mini blogger get together!

So people, support Guy in his comedic adventure. It’s well worth it and you won’t be dissappointed. It’s probably the only chance you’ll have of getting up close to this rock legend playing in such intimate venues.

Guy, the biggest thanks to you for taking the time to play Dublin and an even bigger thanks for hanging back to meet both my wife and I and the rest of the fans. An evening I’ll never forget!

  43. Such a nice idea (once again), that chat session during Guy’s show ! Many thanks.

And a special thanks too to all those who helped me yesterday night to understand what Guy was talking about. Everyone is so kind and patient in the chatroom.

Sharing feelings of the music we were listning to has been a great moment for me.

  44. [After the show, Guy was good enough to hang around and SIGN MY COPY OF HIS BOOK!!! and HAVE HIS PICTURE TAKEN WITH ME AND MY WIFE!!!!!! Thanks so much to Linda ‘Island Lady’ for taking the shot. Big failte to Linda!!!!! It was an unplanned mini blogger get together!]

thank you . it was cool to meet you and your wife too . glad i could take the picture for you . it is nice to see what a fellow chatter looks like !

  45. Guy did really well on that radio. Especially his chat with Phil Manzanera was nice to listen to. A multi talented bloke.

I bet if he tried hard he would manage to paint his house anyway.

  46. To Raymond,

im gutted for you, i can only guess at the amount of time & effort you spent on trying to organize the get to-gether (I read some of the posts on here). You must be so disappointed to say the least. I think a lot of us here will have a lot of sympathy for you.

I hope your get together later on in the week is as much as you wish for & those that turn up for that make it a memorable occasion for you all, & you can turn around to those that couldn’t make the original date & tell them…..

    Wish you were here ..

(on second thoughts, maybe you dont wish that now)

  47. Hey, I was wondering if anyone could help me with this.

I woke this morning quite bewildered?!? I looked out the window and for some reason I could see blue where there is normally clouds. I felt warmth when normally it’s cold. There was this big bright yellow thing shining down on me when normally it’s lashing rain. I got quite frightened not knowing what was going on and ran back inside.

Can someone let me know what’s going on??

  48. Hey Fed

to be an irregular on the blog how many times do you need to appear, as I appear irregularly does this help???? HA HA HA.

Hope all is well and I am looking forward to leicester square, the gilmour train is rolling and picking up pace.

P.S I belive in my heart of hearts that the mighty reds of europe will win the league this year. We’ll win it 19 times we’ll win it 19 times now rafa’s here our team is sublime. my own i know its crap but what the hell.

    peace to all
    5 times

[I think it’s good. It certainly works for me. 19 times… – Features Editor]

  49. happy anniversary to david and polly. 🙂

i thought guy’s show on saturday was good on the whole. i’m glad he played three syd songs from ‘the madcap laughs’.

i still think david is very cool for playing ‘dark globe’ last year (plus ‘dominoes’ in 2002 and 2006).

[And ‘Terrapin’ (in 1996). – Features Editor]

  50. [13 years ago at 11,30am, on 29.07.1994 you were married. That was your day, your moment.]

To know the anniversary date is OK but to actually know and quote the time is just a little too personal and potentially obsessive. This of course is my opinion.

I certainly couldn’t tell you what time other than daytime I got married.

  51. [Can someone let me know what’s going on??]

  52. By the way, will there be more marketing and promotion of these theatre dates? Other than on this site and blog, I hear absolutely nothing about it. No mention on radio, newspapers, magazines or other media.

Is that possibly why the Leicester Square performance is not sold out yet?

    [Yes. Twice. – Features Editor]

  53. I know David played ‘Terrapin’ in 2001, but ‘Terrapin’ in 1996 ? What is that ? Never heard of that…, please, where did he play that ? and why ?

[At a benefit concert for Tibet when the Dalai Lama visited London in July 1996. At Alexandra Palace, I think it was. – Features Editor]

  54. Woohoo!! Thanks for that Graham!! How will I explain this to my wife…? Had cheese sandwich, went to bed, WOKE UP IN MIAMI!

But on a serious note, what is going on with the weather! All the Irish Weather stations are saying it’s quite normal weather… yeah right! Maybe if I lived in the Amazon but this is Dublin, Ireland!! Dryest April in recorded history and wettest July in recorded history!!!

My sympathies to anyone in the UK or anywhere for that matter who are feeling or suffering the diverse effects of the weather. My small issue with having to remember a brolly is insignificant when compared to those who are literally drowning and losing their homes.

    Thoughts are with you guys…

  55. Happy belated birthday to, as David sometimes says it, Mr. Richard Wright!

  56. Hullo FED and All !!!!

    Rabidsoul is back. Grrrr…

First off, to David and Polly. Hope your day yesterday was filled with warmth and laughter and that you two , have maybe had a moonlit stroll…From me to you two, Happy Anniversary !!!

Richard, hope your day was filled with the same and keep those fingers of yours healthy. We love what you can do with those magnificent digits of yours !!!!

To Angelo, hoping yours was a special day too.

Thank God for my Gemini duality ! Yesterday found me down and out. Today is finding me “feisty”. Hmmm…must be contagious, eh, FED ?

I’ll be checking back in later to make announcement for this weeks’ meet up. I’m figuring maybe a late dinner perhaps with Veronica and Randy, perhaps we’ll catch up with Ulli and Mario. I know you mentioned, Veronica that your week is to be pretty busy, but I believe we are all meant to meet each other. Courtesy of this wonderful site and community I believe it is destiny. Ah, cautious optimism, but optimism at all is better than none.

Well, FED and all I am off to run errands and even though I was suppose to begin working as of today I was bumped to Monday the 13th, don’t ask me why.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great day.

BTW, Frank and Graham and FED and the all of you, thank you for your kind words and all. We
“Gilmourites” are a tough bunch and I’ve noticed that when the going gets tough we tend to circle the bandwagons tighter when the s*** hits the fan. When one of us is wounded, there is somebody to help us up. With an outstretched hand we help pick up our compatriots in their time of need. Well I believe I’ve said my piece…well I’m off to run to the market andI will check back later.

Ulli and Mario, if you are able to check from a computer that’s one thing, I’ll call you guys later…we will meet….some sunny day……

    Cazart !

  57. Just a quick one to say was in London at weekend and took chance to collect my ticket for the Odeon, Leicester Square and the booking office did confirm tickets are still available. Strange considering the rush when they first went on sale.

I was told that it is wise to collect them in plenty of time.

    Ian Pearson

PS Seems loads of places to meet up there.

  58. [Hey, I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. I woke this morning quite bewildered?!? I looked out the window and for some reason I could see blue where there is normally clouds. 59. [Seven US cinemas have a delayed on-sale date, due to ticket system changes.]

Boy FEd, what would you do if something ran absolutely smoothly with no SNAFUs?? You’d probably have to pinch yourself to make sure you were still alive.

I feel for you my friend.

  60. Happy Anniversary David and Polly. Happy Birthday Richard Wright. Best wishes and many happy returns to you all!

I just purchased my ticket for Emeryville, CA.

This is going to be an awesome event, thanks for adding the US/Canada showing. I look forward to meeting some bloggers too 🙂

    Have a great week everyone.

  61. [Needless to say I am disappointed, disgruntled and even a little disenfranchised. A lot of effort goes into these things. Just because you build it does not mean they will come. Obviously.]

Raymond, I feel your pain. I found the same disappointment in organising a Mid-Atlantic get together. Luckily, everyone bailed on it a few days before I signed a contract for the hall I was to rent.

Water under the bridge, and a learning experience. I would have been on the warpath if I had lost my shirt…I hope no money was lost in your case.

It is a bit sad that the few who are motivated enough and passionate enough to get organised and try to get something together get disappointed in the end. I certainly hope you don’t lose your motivation as I did!

  62. A belated Happy Anniversary wish to David and Polly. Hope you had a lovely celebration and have many many more happy years together.

And Happy Belated Birthday to Rick Wright.

Ray McAteer..sorry to hear about the get-together falling thru. Keep trying tho.

    Later all,

  63. its not so easy to be *irrregular* when theres a 5 hour time difference, trust me. life is hectic round bout these parts.

  64. I wanted to wish the Gilmour’s a happy anniversary and Richard Wright a Happy Birthday.

    Take Care,

  65. Hullo FED and All !!!

First off, I want to clear the air about something.

When Saturday afternoon rolled around I had checked my balance and found that I had hit the proverbial financial brick wall. I would’ve loved to meet Ulli and Mario and Veronica and Randy, but with less than two gallons of gasoline and three dollars to my name and with none of my so-called “friends” who initially expressed enthusiastic interest in attending going to be able to make it, well, I do apologize for letting myself and the other four honorees (Ulli, Mario, Veronica & Randy) down.

The really ironic part was the weather did hold out. As it turned out, Lisa and I did re-connect on Saturday night at least. God, it made me realise how much I have truly missed her. We hung out together and watched PULSE then she “took me out” and plied me with drink, on her dime, and cheered me up, to say the least.

Anyway, I AM VERY HAPPY that Ulli and Veronica and Mario and Randy got to meet up and have a wonderful night. WISH I HAD BEEN THERE. However, I could not meet them and expect them to “foot the bill” entirely. That is not in the McAteer Dictionary. We are a humble family and when given the right enviroment we are very gregarious hosts when it comes to even simple dinners.

When it comes to events, such as the one I had planned, it doesn’t bode well for the host to run out of money. I do not expect for anybody to “pay my way” and what with my “Sad Sack” position as of Saturday and none of my so-called “boosters”, if you will, coming through, there was no one way in hell I would let, or take advantage of Veronica’s, Randy’s, Ulli’s or Mario’s good fortune. I am a working class slob who takes the high road instead of the low road or even the half assed road in between. That is me.

Instead, there will be, a meet up, albeit a small intimate affair at an area restaurant later this week. I attempted to contact Ulli and Mario this eve, but to no avail.

Ulli, Mario, let’s do lunch sometime this week. Call me. Veronica, I’ll try to call you in a.m., but if I can’t get a hold of you I will leave a message. Same thing with Ulli and Mario, however I can’t leave a message with you two. Can you help with that Ulli ? I mean it would be great if all five (or six, Lisa, hopefully will come with) of us can get together.

Anyway, I am really knackered and my back is f’ing with me so need to lay down. I’ll check back tomorrow/today on here.

Again, FED, thank you for everything. Thank You Everyone !!!!!

Peace and Love To All !!! Cazart !

  66. Happy Anniversary Polly and David. Many Happy Returns.

Hello Blue Sky, Hello Blue Sky, Hello, Hello. Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo.

  67. Whew! I finally caught up reading all the posts and as usual, I am amused by some…

I enjoyed the chat during Guy’s Planet Rock broadcast, excellent idea, thank you FEd.

It was certainly a double bonus for us listening to both Guy Pratt and Phil Manzanera on the show. What a nice treat!

A fabulous picture of David Gilmour on the DVD page, was this picture taken by Polly?

[I believe so. – Features Editor]

  68. [geoff duffy, if you knew about this and didn’t tell me, you and i will have words at the next chat]

I did indeed know Linda but alas I was in Limerick last saturday and could not attend.

That really did ruin my weekend but Guy, if you are reading “Encore, Encore ”

  69. [was in London at weekend and took chance to collect my ticket for the Odeon, Leicester Square… I was told that it is wise to collect them in plenty of time.]

Should I be concerned FEd? Probably a silly question to ask you, but I’m sure I’m not alone in that I’ll only be arriving there on the day!

Just one other thing, maybe it’s been asked before, maybe it’s a question for the Leicester Square Q&A, maybe it’s a stupid question, but is there a reason David doesn’t play any material from his first 2 solo albums at recent concerts – ‘About Face’ and ‘David Gilmour’. I’d have loved to hear ‘Until it Sleeps’, ‘Raise My Rent’ or Guy playing the fretless bass of ‘Murder’. When did he last perorm from these albums? I know he has such a vast back catalogue of PF favourites as well as OAI to fill a setlist. As far as I know there is no official live recording of any material from these 1st 2 albums.

Sorry for such an early morning heckle!! It was bugging me on the way to work this morning.

Those of you effected by the delayed release of tickets in the US, keep strong, I can only imagine the level of anticipation.

Waiting for someone or something to show you the way”

[You can collect your tickets from the Odeon on the night, don’t worry. The answer to your question, one would presume, is that ‘On An Island’ is the present (which is of interest to David) whereas David’s other solo albums are the past (and are, therefore, considerably less interesting). Yes, some readers will be falling over their fingers right about now, trying to be the first to smugly point out that Pink Floyd is also the past. Yet the tour was always about ‘On An Island’ first, with some of David’s favourite Floyd numbers, thrown in for good measure, second. Considering that more than half of the band know the Pink Floyd material very well, it’s not that surprising. David did take ‘About Face’ on the road. A concert video was released by CBS Fox – in NTSC format only – in 1984, documenting the Hammersmith Odeon show of that April. There was also a documentary and some promo videos. Worth looking for, if you think you can find it. – Features Editor]

  70. [Thats the fat old sun Brian, Don’t get too used to it, its Ireland so goodbye blue sky is probably more apt or any colour you like as long as it’s black. – Rgds Geoff Duffy ( Atlantis… I mean Dublin )]

    hi geoff and brian .

i can’t belive it . i was out doing some shopping and i needed to put on my sun glasses . the fat old sun is certainly shining out here by the coast in dublin .

my uncle arrives from new york in a while so i hope it lasts for him and his friend todd !

  71. Thanks for that FEd. My mind is at ease now.

I think I came across something along the Hammersmith Odeon show on Amazon, but as far as I can tell it’s a bootleg – DVD/CD package in PAL format. Aint supposting that malarky!!

[I’m sure Odeon staff don’t want to be dealing with a queue of people ten minutes before the show starts, that’s all. It’s always wise to get there early, but it doesn’t have to be this early. The item you mention is a bootleg. The concert was never released on DVD or CD. – Features Editor]

  72. I want to remember here a genius.

Michelangelo Antonioni passed away last night.

    Thanks for all, Michelangelo.

  73. ciao a tutti,

off topic. Two big names of cinema died in the last few hours. Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni.

All of you Pink Floyd fans know that one of the most famous films of Michelangelo Antonioni is “Zabriskie Point” (1970). Pink Floyd were part of the soundtrack. At the beginning they were hired to write all the soundtrack but Antonioni was a very difficult man and saved only three pieces of all those written by the band. One of these pieces is a country piece that comes out of a car radio for few seconds. the other two are the opening of the movie, and the exceptional ending (a reworked “careful with that axe eugene”).

The film itself is nice and tells a lot of the culture of the time.

Bootleg versions of the whole sessions are available for years now. I think Antonioni gave a hard time to Pink Floyd and David. 🙂

  74. Regarding Brian Kildare’s post above:

David was really in a no win situation, damned if you do and damned if you don’t. It certainly would have been nice to hear some of the other solo material, then again it would have been nice to hear something from Animals as well.

Imagine if he decided to just to solo material. Then you would have a group grumbling that no PF material was done.

I remember when Robert Plant went on his first solo tour. He was harshly criticized for not doing any Led Zeppelin material. In fact it wasn’t until some of his later tours that he actually felt comfortable in introducing some Zep to the set.

But I think Mick Jagger handled it the best when the Stones went out on their Steel Wheels tour. That was basically the reunion of the Stones after they all did a few solo projects. At the press conference in Grand Central Station a reporter asked what the set will be and if any solo material will be in the set. Mick answered and firmly said at the end, “No solo material.” Done, case closed.

Maybe some day David may get the bug to do a nostalgic tour like several other performers have done without promoting any new material, such as the David Bowie Sound and Vision tour. Then again maybe not. But I’m sure that all will agree when I say that I hope David will continue to record, perform and provide us with music to our ears.

  75. really enjoyed the radio show on sunday. well some of the music was questionable 😉 but the chat was 1st class

and f7 sounded great, a definite purchase if the rest of the album is of the same standard, a very full sound

and just ordered the 3cd boxset of patgod, first time I’ll have bought it so the boxset was a no brainer

    and hope everyone is ok?
