Florida shindig

Remember That Night DVD (2007)If you’re interested in meeting some fans in Florida next weekend, speak up. There’s a get-together arranged for Saturday 28 July – and everyone’s welcome.

The chatroom will be open today between 10AM and 12PM (UK).

If you’re new to the chatroom, don’t be shy. It’s easy to register and even easier to use.

The answer to yesterday’s Name That Tune teaser was… ‘Time’. Well done if you guessed correctly. Today’s screenshot is surely too easy, but there’ll be more Name That Tune next week. I know you love it almost as much as you loved Blotto.

If you’re in the UK, don’t forget that you can see ‘Three Men In A Boat’ tonight at 9PM (UK) on Discovery Real Time. That’s channel 250 on Sky and 271 on Virgin TV.

If you missed it the first time, it’s about three comedians (Dara O’Briain, Griff Rhys-Jones and Rory McGrath) journeying up the Thames in a rowing boat, as they seek to recreate the journey immortalised by Jerome K. Jerome in his 1889 comedy classic of the same name.

They drop in on David’s houseboat-studio, Astoria, for a chat.

Thanks to Roger for letting us know about the repeat broadcast, and do keep an eye on the calendar for more of the same.

What were your two favourite tracks to play on this tour (one from ‘On an Island’ and one from the Floyd back catalogue)? (Geoff Duffy)

‘Take a Breath’ and ‘Echoes’.

What is the most challenging ‘On an Island’ or Gilmour composition for you to play? (Andrew)

‘Where We Start’, because the chords require continually extending your fingers. Although, ironically, trying to play a simple tune like ‘Wish You Were Here’ EXACTLY as David plays it proved to be a challenge! After a few lessons in his kitchen, I’m almost there!

  1. [.. We know you love it almost as much as you loved Blotto..Posted by Features Editor at July 18, 2007 01:26 AM]

Aaahh F.E..At least you know at least one guy loves it as per this old post.

[About the photo..All the pics I see here,I always wonder what David is playing at the time.An idea for a future contest F.E.?..Posted by: John nff at November 17, 2006 11:36 PM]

You may be right about the skill level for this above photo F.E.,but you may be trying to pull one over on us so I won’t bite and get my “Hopes High”

  2. Florida Shindig??? Where and when? I would love to go if schedule permits.

[Raymond? Do we have any details, or can I pass your address on? – Features Editor]

  3. Wish I were in Florida! It’s a wonderful experience meeting bloggers…have fun to all attending!

I won’t make the chat either. Have fun to all in the virtual meet-up we’ve grown to love!

  4. oh…it was Time? Wow that’ s interesting…mostly everyone guessed “Take a Breath” or “Echoes”…

Hope everyone’s holding up in the UK! 🙂

    Cheers!
    K.C.

  5. Thanks FED and most of all to Mr. Gilmour for allowing this wonderful event to take place. Without ‘OAI’ in the first place this wouldn’t have been possible. Thanks David and to you as well, Polly ! Nothing in Life like havin a muse, eh ?

Thank you, FED for everything ! And everbody else ! Without you all, this community wouldn’t have the cohesiveness that it does. My heart and mind goes out to all of you that matter. You know who you are ! Well, if I am to make chat today I better get some sleep in, NOW.

BTW, it’s either ‘High Hopes’, which I have for everything coming up or ‘Smile’ which I am doing now. : )

Well, off to Dreamland for me ! Be seeing you !

Peace and Love To All ! Cazart !

  6. That’s High Hopes! Doubtless, hehe! And actually I would have said it was Comfortably Numb yesterday, weird thing!

    Hope everyone’s doing great!

    Shine on!

    Jorge.

  7. Name that tune: Smile

How is WYWH a simple tune? Every time I try and play it it sounds nothing like it’s supposed to – more a collection of noises. I guess that means I’ll just have to practice a bit more. Or…David could teach me in his Kitchen…I’m a very good chef so I’ll do the cooking if he does the teaching.

    Hope all’s well.
    Dom

  8. I was sure it is comfortably numb… never guessed it’s time.

And phil, you’re making me hate you… how I want some lessons from david in his kitchen :-).

  9. Oh and something I forgot… Fed, can you please tell me if this my space is official or if it has any connection to David?

    Thank you!

[It is official. It’s still being worked on, but is the latest addition to David’s site. – Features Editor]

  10. Thanks for those Phil!! Well done Geoff! Is that a 1st for an Irish man to get his question up there?

Did anyone guess yesterdays tune was ‘Time” FEd? I didn’t see any…

I reckon todays is either ‘Take a Breath’ or ‘High Hopes’.

  11. WEISENBORN guitar, it has to be smile 🙂

A fellow blogger noticed his credit card will be out of date by 6th September when he goes to collect his tickets. I will be in the same situation.

NOT your problem Fed, i will call the bank to see what they advise. They must have had this situation before. I guess take everything regarding proof of purchase to the Odeon.

    have a good day all.

[I wouldn’t even bother calling the bank, Graham. Take both old, and new, credit card with you when you collect your tickets. It never hurts to have some other form of ID with you, either (preferably something with your photo on it, if possible). As long as Odeon staff can see that you possess the card that was used to buy the tickets, plus something else to prove that you are the person named on the card, you should be fine. Only a complete and utter jobsworth would quibble over such an issue, I’m sure. Odeon staff will be used to these things. – Features Editor]

  12. Oh mates, allow me this silly comment, but I am thinking about that since Guy answered our questions, Steve confirmed my astonishment and now Phil is doing the same:

HOW CAN YOU BE SO SHORT ANSWERING TO THESE QUESTIONS? You are great!!! I would have talk for hours and hours! I love the gift of being short! I simply don’t say a word if I am not interesting in something but then I am a river of words when something excites me.

I am very envious about your english ability to write so good things in a so short way! I am really envious…and this post is too long, to say a so silly comment!

    L!

  13. hmm i would say smile,

reason being he seems to be standing to play this instrument which isnt the usual slide guitar he plays during high hopes at which he usually sits.

i also note he seems to be much closer to rick than the high hopes slide guitar which if memory serves was much close to mr steve.

having giving you all my carefully considered evidence its probably something ridiculous like castellorizon 😉

  14. Raymond? can email me at […] if and when details become available for the Florida shindig.

I hope it’s nearby as I would really enjoy meeting some of the fine folks from the Blog.

[Consider your address passed on, mate. Hope you can make it. – Features Editor]

  15. NTT is Smile. It’s the Weissenborn Lapsteel Guitar, on High Hopes David uses AFAIR his Jedson Lapsteel with EMG Pickup.

  16. Hi FEd,

Thanks for the namecheck (not needed but V.nice all the same).

28th July in Florida. Nope, can’t make that one either.

Firstly I won’t be in the USA, let alone Florida.

Secondly it’s my Daughter’s Wedding Day, so I guess I’ll be a bit busy!

I’m trying to get her to have SOYCD as the arrival music – (Fat Chance!!)

    Roger (Not that one)

[All the best to your daughter on her big day, Roger. Enjoy the occasion. – Features Editor]

  17. I think FEd has run off to Castellorizon after last Fridays events!!

    [I wish! – Features Editor]

  18. In the infamous words of Homer Simpson…”Wooo Hooo.”

I got my question answered and a very interesting response as well. Hmmmm….guess Polly and the kids were in the den so David and Phil were relegated to the kitchen.

In any case, thanks for all the responses, it is always interesting to read the answers to all blogger questions.

As for the Name That Tune, everyone seems to be going with High Hopes. I going to say Shine On just to be different.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

  19. Without a doubt…it’s HIGH HOPES..

    Will check back later..

    Have a good day.

  20. p.s. Thanks FEd for making the announcement of the South Floridian Gathering. Either Raymond or myself will provide more details on that.

[My pleasure. I hope it goes well. – Features Editor]

  21. Phil thank you so much for answering my question.

Rgds Geoff Duffy ( Dublin )

  22. it has to be ‘high hopes’ for me.

nice questions today. i like them. thanks to all involved. 🙂

to roger: thanks for the heads up. i will be watching ‘three men in a boat’ later. i’ve seen it before, but it’s worth watching again. the astoria looks fab.

  23. Hey Roger,

I just got married a month ago in Spain and had SOYCD as our 1st song played by a great PF tribute band with sax and all! We finished with Run Like Hell!! So there is hope!

Best of luck to you and your daughter.

    [Congratulations, Brian. – Features Editor]

  24. High Hopes? If memory serves, he used his regular acoustic for the first solo and lap steel for the rapturous second solo…

    My vote is for Smile….

  25. i am sure David uses a different lap steel guitar for High Hopes, aka the one he used on the last PF tour, so that leads me to think this isnt Breathe either as i think David didnt play that part on the latest tour with the exception of Live 8. So smile? at a good guess.

please correct me if i am wrong on any details?!?

  26. [I just got married a month ago in Spain and had SOYCD as our 1st song played by a great PF tribute band with sax and all! We finished with Run Like Hell!! So there is hope! – Posted by: brian_Kildare at July 18, 2007 03:05 PM]

Congratulations to you, Brian! Your post got me all teary-eyed as “Run Like Hell” was indeed our wedding song! Fun! Very best wishes to you.

And congratulations to Roger’s (Not That One’s) daughter. Have a wonderful day!

I know the Florida bloggers will have lots of fun! I’ll be there in spirit.

July 18…62 days to go for us Yanks! Oh, and my guess is that those are David’s shoes….oh wait…wrong game? Has to be “High Hopes,” which of course, should have been Blotto entry #17, but isn’t.

[Oh yes, I know how much you loved ‘Whose Shoes?’. Mustn’t forget that. – Features Editor]

  27. FEd – hope all is well with you today.

Time! i was sure it was echoes lol

This one I’m going with Smile, i think High hopes is a trap, carefully laid.

    SK

  28. FED, thank you for the advice regarding the Odeon.

[No problem, Graham. I hope it’s good advice. If in doubt, you could always send the Odeon an e-mail by clicking your name below. – Features Editor]

  29. Happy Birthday Frank!

Guys… it’s Frank Par’s 97th birthday today so let’s all wish him a very happy birthday but shout it out as he’s a bit Mutt and Jeff… (Deaf)

    Happy Birthday Frank 🙂

    P.S. He’s not really 97…

[Have a good one, Frank. – Features Editor]

  30. I’ll be in and out today as I have an extremely busy day.

Stockman, rest assured either I, myself, will get to you, but, FED, if you have received my earlier e-mail to you and could forward to Stockman and anyone else expressing interest please by all means, go ahead and forward e-invitation on my behalf.

God, I feel like the proverbial chicken with it’s head cut off. Hey, at least I’m not running around in circles !!! : )

    Thanks a million, FED !! You’re the BEST !!!!!!

Peace and Love To All !!! Cazart !

  31. i don’t think i will be attending the flordia meet, although i’d love to.

i don’t mind having this email address passed along for such events. i’d like to set something up for a canada meet open for everyone as well, may i display my email on the blog? or how is the best way to go about this?

    -cemet

[I’d rather pass on your address directly, Cemet, if that’s alright. I’m not comfortable with people putting personal details on show here, because people have done that of their own free will in the past, and then grumbled about it later. For the record, I will never give out anyone’s e-mail address on demand. You need to let me know who you want your address sent to, and it will be done. That’s the best I can do. If anyone is interested in a Canada get-together, let us know and we can work something out. Maybe wait until we have the list of Canadian cinemas? – Features Editor]

  32. my guess would be the end of High Hopes.

Send my correct guess prize to the following address:

    hahaha

    Darren

  33. Hi all.

Just got back from vacation. Hiked up Mt Langley and Mt Whitney (14,027 and 14,497 feet respectively).

Have to tell you, on Saturday morning I waited for the sunrise to come over Mt Whitney while listening to OAI. We were camped at the edge of… get this… Guitar Lake! How cool is that? The lake actually is shaped like a guitar! Fed if I knew how I’d send you a picture.

    Have a great day all.
    Tim

[If you can upload it and send me the URL, I’d be happy to share. Sounds nice. – Features Editor]

  34. Happy Birthday, indeed, Frank Par! Hope your day is wonderful and fun in every way! Passing glasses of virtual champagne around the blog….

  35. You’ll never guess what happened to me today Gilmour Fans!!!!!

I changed my 1st Guitar string!!!!!!!

I changed it from ‘broken’ to ‘Fender Plain Steel!’ Apparently its the .010 string!

I feel like such a man, I feel like getting drunk…..I’m Off to Celebrate!!!!!

  36. Fed

I was reading the blog when I noticed something about “my space”.

Please tell me that this web site will be here for a while longer. I have grown to love David’s web site and the friends I have made here. Plus as David’s Editor you have made this place feel like home.

I’m just worried and sorry to bother you but just needed to know.

    Take Care, Thomas

[Nothing to worry about. It’s just something extra for the site. – Features Editor]

  37. [Guitar Lake! How cool is that? The lake actually is shaped like a guitar! – tim taylor]

Bet there’s a lot of bass in there 🙂

  38. I do believe That Tune would be Smile:-))

Only two months to go until we can Remember That Night … can hardly wait, I tell you! But, of course, with our new cinematic treat on September 6, the Time will pass quickly, put a big Smile on all our faces and give us a chance to Take a Breath while we wait with High Hopes until we hear Echoes from The Blue once again!

Many thanks to David for all the wonderful memories, whether they be from back in the day or more recent additions to my soundtrack. You’ve given me so much through your music, I can’t thank you enough and I mean that most sincerely!!

Thanks to Polly as well for her inspiration and sharing so many beautiful photographic memories with us as well!

And thank you FEd for keeping us up-to-date on all the goings on! Man, what a journey this has been and continues to be … definitely a special time for us all I’d say!

Last, but not least, thanks to all the Irregulars out there! Can’t imagine a better community of people to hang out with:)

Wishing you all peace and love!
    Gabrielle
    Washington State

  39. Fed- tell me how to do that and I’d be glad to…. it is on my hard-drive. Where do I go from there?

    Tim

[You need to get it on the net somehow. There are websites (such as PhotoBucket, Flickr, ImageShack, Fotki) which will host your photos and videos for you. It’s free to sign up and you get 1GB of storage, or something like that. Certainly enough to share a few pictures with the world. Once you’ve uploaded it, let me know the URL/link that will take visitors directly to the picture (we won’t link to entire galleries) and we can all see it. – Features Editor]

  40. It has to be Smile!

On High Hopes David uses an electric lapsteel, not the acoustic one shown in the photo. 🙂

  41. From me to you, Frank…a big hearty, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!!” and many more happy returns. Wish I could actually return a few years myself : ) back to Father Time !!! I sincerely hope that yours is a blessedly grand day spent with family and friends, us included !!

Well, FED, I guess I’ll be handling this matter of the e-invitations myself, but if I happen to need an extra assist, I guess I’ll defer to my lovely Co-Chair Woman On The Scene, Veronica. But thanks so much for lending a hand and for letting us share the platfrom to announce this wonderful upcoming soiree. Man, I am practically giddy with anticipation ! If I need a helping hand I will gladly defer to The Grand FED !!

I’ll keep checking back from time to time for others who desire to attend our quaint little gathering ! Well, I am off to pick up m’ Ma from work. I’ll see you all later ! Shine On You Crazy Diamonds !

Peace and Love To All !!! Cazart !

  42. Happy Birthday Frank!

My guess for NTT is `Smile`. although I`m pretty sure David used that slide guitar on another song as well, but I can`t remember which one.

And with talk of `guitar lake` and `castellorizon` it reminds me I must book a holiday!

    Cheers all.
    Adrian.

  43. Don’t know if it’s been asked before, but will the DVD see a CD release?

[It’s been asked many times, but I’m afraid it’s still the same answer for now. There is to be no CD echoing the material on the DVD. I’m sorry to disappoint you. – Features Editor]

  44. Miss you guys…

Just wanted to say that. Been busy with soccer and some other David over here, Beckham I think 😉

Well I can’t wait to see Live from Abbey Road tomorrow.

    Renee B

  45. OMG. Just to share for a moment.

Some of you may have seen there was a huge steam pipe explosion in New York City. Well that happened right by the building I work in. I heard it and it was one of the scariest sounds I ever heard, especially since no one knew what the heck was going on. We evacuated into the street and only saw smoke coming out from behind our building. Well we got away from there as fast as possible.

It was good to hear that this was nothing more than a pipe that burst due to age. But it was still a scary experience and I am just pleased that I am still here with all of you.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

[Sounds nasty, Andrew. Glad you’re alright. – Features Editor]

  46. I enjoyed reading the Q&A of Mr. Manzanera, Umm… that “green pea soup” …

Insightful answers from Mr. Manzanera and excellent questions from the bloggers.

    Thank you.

  47. ** HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRANK PAR!!! **

Hope your day was great, and the new year brings only the BEST!!!

    ~Susan

  48. [Oh yes, I know how much you loved ‘Whose Shoes?’. Mustn’t forget that. – Features Editor]

Could we have another “rainy day” quiz please, since its mid summer?? Other items of clothing, “Whose gloves, string vest or even whose hand?

    Ian Pearson

  49. Happy Thursday,

I heard that the said 3 comedians are making a new series of 3 men in a boat.

This time they start at Oxford and row towards London.

Anybody else got any info on this.

    Pete – Coventry

  50. How can the same man say “where would rock & roll be without feedback” some years later extoll the virtures of an edwardian “lavatory”

three men & a boat, very entertaining.

“that was in 3/4 time wasn’t it?”

  51. It cannot be High Hopes, because he played the red lap steel then. It has to be Smile I think.

  52. Don’t know why, but I found it hilarious that people have had “Run Like Hell” played at their wedding. It actually made me laugh aloud.

I just wish I’d thought of that several years ago, when I was getting married. “RLH” would have been a good balance for all those sappy Celine Dion love songs that my wife selected.

  53. Hi FEd, and fellow bloggers.

Many thanks for your best wishes for my Daughters wedding on 28th July.

I think it’s also the 40th Anniversary of the release in to the wild of “Piper” in the UK.

Anyone care to correct me on that?

    Roger

  54. Wedding music…

I suggested Land of Confusion by Genesis but I was usurped and we ended up with a Chris de Burgh ditty…

    Sorry…

  55. Hi FEd,

I see people asking for another competition.

How about “Where were you when”. Pick some significant DG/PF dates & give us a chance to reminisce.

No Prizes just wallow in Nostalgia!

Nostalgia isn’t what it was, is it?

[Just as long as nobody takes it as an invitation to write at great length for each date. Maybe next week or the week after, as the blog is fully booked for the time being. – Features Editor]

  56. [Wedding music…I suggested Land of Confusion by Genesis but I was usurped and we ended up with a Chris de Burgh ditty…]

Rudders, which song was that? Don’t Pay the Ferryman? ;O)

    Darren

  57. [After a few lessons in his kitchen, I’m almost there! – Phil]

I think everyone here is imaging how cool would have been to be a piece of furniture in that kitchen and see the men working!

I want to be the clock above the fridge. I think clocks in the kitchen always have great positions to see all from the top. I could be a fork, but I would risk to be closed into a drawer and don’t see anything…too bad.

    L!

  58. [I think it’s also the 40th Anniversary of the release in to the wild of “Piper” in the UK. Anyone care to correct me on that?]

    Roger,

Piper at the Gates of Dawn is certainly being given the gold star treatment this year. The expanded version will include 3-cds and a 12 page reproduction of Syd Barret’s notebook.

Amazon.com shows it as being released late August 28th in North America and September 3rd in Europe.

Good luck on your daughters wedding on July 28th. You’ve got to be one proud father. :O)

    All the best,
    Darren

  59. Best wishes for your daughter’s wedding on 28th July, Roger !

    And 28th July, isn’t it Rick’s birthday, too ?

    Michèle

[I believe so. – Features Editor]

  60. [Guitar Lake! How cool is that? The lake actually is shaped like a guitar! – tim taylor]

[Bet there’s a lot of bass in there 🙂 – Matt]

What a funny (cute actually) remark you made about the “Bass” in the lake that shaped like a “guitar” Matt!

My belated “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” to Frank Par – hope it was a blast!!

Not to forget Brian Kildare, belated “Congrats and Best wishes” and of course, to Roger, my best wishes to your daughter and we’ll be cheering for her on July 28th at the Floridian Shindig.

    Later…

  61. A belated Happy Birthday to ol’ man Frank;-)) Oh, and if you’re having trouble walking today check your legs as I believe Rudders and Angelo are tugging furiously at them!!

Andrew, I’m so glad that you are safe … what a scary experience. I don’t mean to make light of a frightening situation but I kind of chuckled at the comment “pipe burst due to age.” I think I’ve had similar events in my head with steam coming out my ears but you’d have to ask my husband about that!

ripper, are you sure that isn’t Stand-Up Bass Lake? I could be wrong but …

[… Maybe next week or the week after, as the blog is fully booked for the time being. – Features Editor]

FEd, so much to look forward to from the sound of it. We’re certainly an insatiable lot aren’t we? But we appreciate it so damn much and I hope you know that!

    Peace!
    Gabrielle

[Oh, I know it. – Features Editor]

  62. Nice picture of Guitar Lake Ripper! Did you take it yourself? Looks like it was taken close to Trail Crest on the way up Whitney.

Fed- I don’t think I could improve on Rippers photo, so I’ll just leave it at that.

No Bass in Guitar Lake… no fish that I could see (or catch) at all. A lot of beautiful Golden Trout in other lakes lower in altitude- in fact the Golden Trout is one of the prettiest fish I think I’ve seen!

We slept on the lower right edge of the body of the guitar in the rocky patch. Quite amazing!

    Tim

  63. to fed: nice work on david’s myspace.

to all fans in the usa: enjoy ‘live from abbey road’ tonight! it’s ace.

  64. Andrew, that must be some frightening moments, I am glad you are ok.

Heading out to friend’s house to watch “LIVE FROM ABBEY ROAD” … can’t wait – 35 mins to go.

  65. More wedding music..

“The Thrill Is Gone”(B.B.King)..could you imagine?..especially during the 1st dance!..Yikes!!

  66. Thank You Gang, this topped my day.

I’m 52 if you are wondering and I still play baseball with some aches and pains. Without crutches I may add.

    Nice photo too Ripper.

  67. I am a little late but a very Happy Birthday to you Frank, from a neighbor in Montréal!!!

Hope everybody has a wonderful summer (here it is so,so; rain, a little sun, rain, rain…)
    Sylvie de Montréal xxx

  68. If you were trying to guess the song being performed in the image above, then it’s ‘Smile’.

If you’re interested in the Florida meet-up, scheduled for Saturday, please click the link below to leave a message at the most recent entry, where it is more likely to be read.

    Thank you.

  69. Hi David, ‹^^›_ ‹(•¿•)›_

do you remember the friendly taxi driver from Hamburg (March 2006), who brought you back to SAS in the night? It’s me. 🙂

Since a long time your music is a very important part of my life and my heart and then I met you in my taxi, couldn´t believe it, couldn´t talk anything! Shocked so much.

Unfortunately I couldn´t see your concert in Hamburg Live.

Tell me, is there plan for a new concert in Germany in the future?

All what I wanted to say directly to you is: THANK YOU FOR YOUR MUSIC and all the best for you

    Thanks a lot,
    Andreas from Hamburg

Maybe meet again. We have only 3600 taxis in Hamburg 😉

[Great post, Andreas. Thank you for writing. I’m sorry, but there are no live shows planned for Germany… or anywhere. However, you will be able to see David’s DVD (of last year’s ‘On An Island’ tour) in several German cinemas in September. We’ll have all the details soon. – Features Editor]
