Blotto (#3)

May 18 & 19, 2006: Rehearsing at Bray. Thanks for letting us know which of the 11 remaining slots on the concert DVD, and therefore, on your Blotto card, intrigues you most.

If you’re still playing along, please reach for your Blotto card, because the 13th song to be revealed is ‘Time’, which will be the third track on the concert DVD.

No surprises there, then.

Please mark the ‘3’ space on your game card accordingly. If you guessed that ‘Time’ would be the third song, then you are correct. Anything else is, sadly, incorrect.

If you need reminding, the aim of the game is to complete a line, horizontally or vertically, on your card with correct guesses. If you manage to do this, please let us know by letting out a delirious squeal of “Blotto!” and your name will be entered into a prize draw.

Even if you don’t expect to complete a line, do keep tallying up your correct guesses. Whoever has guessed the most songs and has put them in the correct order will scoop the prize (which is as yet undecided, but there are some good ideas bouncing around).

There are 23 songs on the concert DVD of David’s forthcoming double-disc set, ‘Remember That Night’, which will be out in September. These songs are all from the Royal Albert Hall.

Thank you all for playing along. Good luck.

Last, but by no means least, the winners of our ‘Where We Start’ contest are Rob and Shannon.

Congratulations, both. Please let us know where we should send your prizes by leaving a message in the usual manner below.

The chatroom will be open tomorrow from 1PM (UK), so feel free to use it to celebrate, commiserate, speculate, ruminate, nauseate, etc.

  1. I am still running for the “Neither one” prize!

    (Congratulations to Rob and Shannon!)

  2. Dear F.Ed. and Bloggers,

Unfortunately I’ve shifted many of the songs one place more than the official list… but at least we can have a better idea of how will be “our” DVD!

Many congratulations to the two winners of the last competition that i’ve lost (it’s the first time in the whole last year, i’m so sad but i’m very busy in the last days and i can have a so little time for my leisure on the web.)

So i hope everything is OK for all of you
    Ciao/bye Elisabetta

  3. […so feel free to use it to celebrate, commiserate, speculate, ruminate, nauseate, etc. – FEd]

or (almost) anything else that rhymes with Nate 😉

Congratulations to (or should that be general concern for) Rob and Shannon in reading the FEd mind 🙂

  4. mediate too fed. thats weird, i was listening to that song this morning. congrats to shannon, rob.

  5. I prefer to nauseate…:-)

Congrats to rob (I’m assuming this is lowercaserob) LOL and Shannon!

I should remember to enter before time expires…as you warned…

Also – a BIG shout out to Wendy – it was great meeting you along with Robin and Angelo in NYC!!!
Mike, (the other) Angelo and I had a blast!

  6. Congrats to Shannon and Rob ! (Rob? which one ? there are two ‘Rob’ in the chatroom, I think…)

Time….Seul le temps effacera un jour ma douleur…peut-être…qui sait ? Don’t exaggerate, mate !

  7. Congratulations to Shannon and Rob! That’s terrific news!

Just over 100 days until the DVD is released! It’s nice to think about having a treat like this at the end of summer. Although my Blotto card is a far cry from actual reality, I’ll probably store it with the DVD, as a souvenir. I’m rather attached to it now.

  8. ciao everyone,

this one is wrong too,for me!

wow what a nice game the Blotto..aaarrrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhh!

  9. but Fat Old Sun, Wearing The Inside Out, Dominoes and The Great Gig In The Sky will be on one of these dvds??

If there is Find The Cost Of freedom (very inevitable) i hope that the 4 songs wrote up will be on this new dvd set!!

  10. Hi all… congrats to Rob and Shannon!

I missed another blotto… but I KNEW I was missing that one as I lumped breathe/time/breathe reprise together (dunno why… I saw someone else do it and followed suit).

Has ANYONE made it to 4 correct answers yet? I’m holding at 3.

    Have a great day all.

  11. Well done guys…

As for the Blotto unless a miracle happens I’m destined for just the two…

  12. Congrats to Shannon and Rob.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day.

  13. What is “Blotto” ?

    Congrats to Shannon and Rob.

Sorry Nate, how could this happen? 🙂

[It’s what you get if you put Bingo and Lotto in a blender. And if you’re trying to drag out details of David’s DVD for as long as possible, using as cheesy a method as possible (whilst all the while being sadly amused by, yet very grateful for, the fact that you can’t spell ‘Blog’ without ‘B’, ‘L’ and ‘O’). Or you could just say that it’s a really bad ‘game’ that some people find very boring. – Features Editor]

  14. Hi Fed

my thoughts are with england and Steve McLaren. one consolation is if we lose the manager goes and we get Rafa Benitez. how cool would that be Fed? a straight swap, u get Steve M we get Rafa. im assuming you would be ok with this mate

anyway baby is screaming, teeth are coming through

see you all soon and best wishes to all out there

[No deal. I know too many songs about Rafa to give him up now. – Features Editor]

  15. Hi FEd,

How’s it going? It was very nice chatting with you guys yesterday.

    Congrats to Rob & Shannon!

Well, at least I’m consistent……Still not a single correct answer! I am just so proud of me!

Hopefully I will catch you guys again on the next chat.

  16. Fed – If you’re there!!!

I’m on the “official merchandise store for North America” and I (please don’t be mad) have not upgraded to the remastered CD’s of both of David’s earlier solo CD’s…yet.

My question: are the CD’s being sold there the remastered versions? I called them and the lady I spoke to said that she didn’t think so because it didn’t say. I thought I would go to the source aka you. I wanted to add this to my order of “Live and In Session”.

I don’t want to wait too long and risk all of the “Live and In Session” DVD’s to be gone.

Lastly, is there a “preferred” place that I should buy my David Gilmour things? For example, is this better than the record store or iTunes, etc…? Who should I make my check out to..Fed? 🙂

Thanks again for all that you do!!! It is much appreciated!!!

[Rob, they sure are the remastered CDs – and darn fine they are, too. As for your question, then I’d always recommend supporting your local independent retailers wherever possible (or just get the items you want wherever they’re cheapest). That said, I think you’ll find that ordering from our official webstore is very easy and can vouch for a quality service. – Features Editor]

  17. [Even if you don’t expect to complete a line, do keep tallying up your correct guesses. – FEd]

You are evilly sarcastic FEd. My score so far : nil 😉

    Congratulations to Rob and Shannon.

    Best regards,

  18. Oh well, I sat down and wrote the best words I could write. *Turn, turn, turn again…* 🙂

    Congrats Rob and Shannon.

I heard Time on the radio this morning and all was just plain good. Where would this world be without David Gilmour? They’d be in a similar place, probably, but it would be much less interesting.

  19. Not been able to participate much lately like some others. Shorthanded at work.

Congratulations to Shannon and Rob. Good job.
    Enjoy those prizes.

Susan: I hope that your health continues to improve. Keep in good spirits. I hear that attitude can help. Enjoy each day. Music and laughter are good medicine as well. This wonderful community has expressed it better. Great place this.

I see I have missed birthdays and new grand children. Congratulations to you all.

    Have a great evening.

  20. My 3 words are:

Thanks mate…I hope I win this time

(I purposely left adulterate out for fear of inappropriate content)

  21. Our local Public Broadcast Station was doing a pledge drive yesterday and they were showing ‘The Colours of Infinity’ documentary narrated by Arthur C. Clarke. The donation-gifts for larger contributions included the DVD & book of the documentary, along with a DG CD.

I’ve had this wonderful documentary on DVD for several years, but it’s been awhile since I’ve had a chance to watch it. After a long days’ work, it was relaxing to hear David’s excellent guitar accompaniment while the “psychedelic” fractals formed from the progressing Mandelbrot Set – check it out if you haven’t already.

  22. Hello! I’m so very excited now that I found out that I’ve won a prize!! Anything Gilmour just makes my day! Anyways, here’s my mailing address: […]

[Congratulations once again, Shannon. – Features Editor]

  23. Congrats, Rob and Shannon, I am very happy for both of you.

I know FEd is a nice guy; but not to the extent that he actually listed his own three words as the examples for us. Very clever; but tricky!

    No win for me!

With only 10 songs left, my hope is that “Echoes”, “Dominoes”, “Fat Old Son”, “Wearing the Inside Out” and “Arnold Layne” will all make it to the “Remember That Night” double-disc set DVD. Well, it would be too late to request that, wouldn’t it?

Good luck all! September is approx. 14 – 16 weeks away!

  24. [Or you could just say that it’s a really bad ‘game’ that some people find very boring. – Features Editor]

    Hey now….

My action word that rhymes with ‘Nate’ for the chat, if I can make it, is ‘inculcate’…which is what I and many others have become here on this site…indoctrinated through repetition.

I’ve grown accustomed to our Blotto revelations. And now that I see its over, I’m going to miss the ‘Three Words’ thingy (congrats to Shannon & Rob).

Speaking of Blotto, I thought I’d reach out to a ‘higher power’ to devine the order for this DVD to no avail…

…security guards stopped me on my way to an unscheduled consultation with Pope Benedict…

  25. Congratulations to Baby Rob and Shannon!

FEd, feeling, feisty? Yeah, I know, that’ll never happen again …

    Blotto is like a long, drawn-out drinking game isn’t it? And treating it as such is the only way that one will actually find oneself ‘blottoed'[;=}

Hey Christine T, when this book/dvd subject was brought up (by Michele I believe) I actually bought two copies, one for my son who is an analytical, mathematical sort, and one for myself … ah, I really like the music and the pretty pictures! And I think that fact may have been the back-story to a question included in a past poll, or are there more like me, eh FEd?

Simon Emery there are fussy babies all around right now — lots of drooling from babies and moms/grandmas alike, but for different reasons! smile …

    Washington State (as usual)

[I’m sure you’re not alone, Gabrielle. – Features Editor]

  26. Congrats Shannon and Rob. I still have none right but have my Unofficial Unblotto now.

Fed the music today is eerily different. Something new perhaps, just wondering.

For Nate, I don’t know what it’s about, I’ll just say Insubordinate.

  27. just got back & catching up slowly with the blog.

[How did it go, Graham? – Features Editor]

  28. I guess this may have already been posted, but its that cool i thought i’d post it again!!

Tuesday 5th June: Floyd Lays Plans For Piper

To mark the 40th anniversary of the original release of Pink Floyd’s first album ‘The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’, a special edition is planned for release via EMI Records on Tues 28th August in North America, and Monday September 3rd in Europe.

The packaging, designed by Storm Thorgerson, resembles a cloth-covered book, and holds 3 CD discs, along with a 12-page reproduction Syd Barrett notebook.

Discs 1 and 2 will contain the full ‘Piper’ album, represented in both stereo and mono versions. Both have been newly remastered by James Guthrie. Disc 3 includes bonus tracks, including the following: all the Pink Floyd singles from 1967, (‘Arnold Layne’, ‘See Emily Play’, and ‘Apples And Oranges’), plus the B sides ‘Candy And A Current Bun’ and ‘Paintbox’.

Other tracks are a version of ‘Interstellar Overdrive’ – Take 2 of the original recording sessions, previously only available on an EP in France – and the 1967 stereo version of ‘Apples And Oranges’.

Other activities surrounding the 40th anniversary celebrations will be announced in due course.

    source: no less!!

  29. Congratulations to Rob and Shannon.

So does this mean that you two think like Fed?

    Have a good day everyone.

[Worrying, isn’t it? – Features Editor]

  30. to rob and shannon: congrats!

to fed: i loved your description of blotto, but it’s not boring.

  32. Congrats to Rob and Shannon. You deserve it for thinking of one of Fed’s words. They can be difficult.

    Good Day.

  33. [Glad you don’t think so. However, Blotto will be taking a new twist next week. – Features Editor]

Can’t wait to see how it could possibly become any more twisted 😉

  34. *Off Topic #1: Great news for Lucia!

On June, 11 (3PM CET), Classic 21 will be broadcasting the Making of ‘The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan’ (Bob Dylan, of course).

    Don’t miss it, Lucia !

*Off Topic #2: Great news for Fed !

  35. Twisted is goooood! But naked twisted is better – no wait, that’s naked Twister I mean… right Charlotte? 😉

Ok, so I went back to the original Blotto post and dug out my (late) entry to see how I’d have fared. It looks like I could have selected a set list from the Meltdown DVD and probably have got more correct!!

Just as long as I get that amazing Fat Old Sun (with extended groovy bit) and a Wots then my toys stay in the pram and no-one gets hurt 🙂

  36. Hi all… I’m new here (tho I have sold a good number of ‘DG in Concert’ on behalf of David and his good causes!).

Reading the earlier post about the other David Gilmour records (see now how old I am) available at ‘The Store’ prompted me to think, why are none of these songs performed in a live setting? (at least I haven’t run across them on all of my DG DVD library, yet).

I, for one, would love to hear ‘There’s No Way Out of Here’ or ‘Raise My Rent,’ or, fittingly these days it seems, ‘Cruise’ in concert.

I hope Mr. Gilmour still feels some affection for these songs. (And, I have bought these discs from the store, and thank you for that).

  37. Hi Xapm,

I’m also a huge lover of “There’s No Way Out Of Here” and also hope that one day David picks this song back up again (and “No Way” as well).

/me waves his DG eponymous album flag again o/

  38. hello how are you?

well id like to thank the academy…. lol.

    address: […]

[Thanks, Rob, and congratulations once again. Hope you like your prize. – Features Editor]

  39. Fat old sun has become one of my favorite plays and I find this to be a quite evocative and touching song – I first paid attention to it on the Meltdown dvd and that prompted me to go after (finally) the whole of Atom Heart Mom. It worked so well for me in that ‘acoustic’ setting.

You know, my own mom (80 just a few days ago) sat and watched that video with me; she now owns it! David’s performance resonated with her, tho I am sure Ms. Dale and the rest have a whole lot to do with how accessible that became for her. I thank David for that as well.

  40. The Important Stuff:

Disgusting. I hate to bring this up again but I needed to vent how disgusted I am at how my Nation derailed a more substantial G8 resolution on Global Climate Change. We can probably all agree that the fix was in….these large corporations would never allow their pockets to be effected…

But it makes me want to throw-up everytime I see a headline like today’s.

Its as if we need to hit the reset button, start-up in safe mode, uninstall corporate and corrupt government drivers, and reboot the machine…

Or maybe just wipe the hard drive and do a clean install…

Oh Crap! My analogies have been peverted by the corporate machine too!

    We’re doomed….

Pedal your bike Ang, the cliff is ahead and to the right…

  41. XAPM… Welcome!

DG has released a VHS Tape of his 1984 solo tour which is well worth watching. It coincides with the release of his About Face album so contains a lot of solo material and some classics from his days with that old beat combo, Pink Floyd…

  42. Angelo…

You reminded me of a t’shirt I saw recently aimed at George W Bush.

    21st January 2009
    The End of an Error

    Love it…

  43. I know its taken me a long time to say this on the blog, but here goes:

    Regarding the 5-Minute teaser…

I’ve never heard the band play High Hopes like that. A lot of pizzicato going on, which I think makes the song ten times better.

And also, I know its only two lines but the way David Bowie sings C Numb an octave higher, is possibly the best way I’ve ever heard. But as I say, its only two lines!

I’m off to the pub. Just finished a Business Plan, for a business thats set to fly in Britain, possible Millionnaire stuff!! (And I’m Marketing them!!!!!)

    Loves ya all,
    Simon J

    Happy Days!

  44. bush is such an idiot. 🙁

[Angelo, some people might be thinking – although not me, obviously, for legal reasons – how great it would be if you could just tie Bush to your bike and push it towards that cliff. Even if you didn’t tie him to it, some people – again, I’m obviously not included among them – might be so brazen to suggest that he’d probably have some difficulty keeping balance on a cliff top, even if you didn’t give him that push. I wonder, does your bike have stabilisers or dodgy brakes? – Features Editor]

  45. Hey Angelo –

Loved your publicity stunt with the pope-mobile 😉

In the style of Yoda…Careful or excommunicate will you become.

…or is that in the style of Nate…

  46. [Angelo, some people might be thinking – although not me, obviously, for legal reasons – how great it would be if you could just tie Bush to your bike and push it towards that cliff. FEd, dear, did you use some drugs?!!! Although, fascinating reasoning!

  47. Hi Fed how are you? I hope everything is right for you!

This site is really amazing, people just share a passion and post a comment.Nevertheless, the most amazing thing is that every message is published. This is real freedom of speech, even if I’ve never met you I’m sure you’re a nice person, just reading your comments under our messages.

Say my idol David that Piero says hello to him and obviously I say hello to you Fed!

    Have a nice evening

[Thank you, Piero. I have to say that not all comments are published, but very few are deleted or edited (and certainly not as many as some people would have you believe when they start whining about “censorship”). The blog works because most of the people who contribute to it are respectful of David, his art and the common-sense rules that, we like to think, keep his website running smoothly. We can’t please everyone, of course, but we try to do what’s right for the good guys. Thanks again for your kind message. It’s much appreciated. – Features Editor]

  48. Gotta get me that shirt, Rudders….that might just save me on my bike with shoddy brakes.

Bush ride off a cliff? I imagine some may assume he’d just walk off the cliff on his own while absentmindedly reading picture books?

A big “shout back” to Rob, Wendy, and the Strawberry Field-BBQ contingent… 🙂

  49. CAPTION:

“You’ve got me girl on the run around run around you’ve got….oops, sorry…”

  50. bush falling off a cliff? that’s a nice thought, fed.

i want one of those t-shirts!

  51. Hi group, Features Editor.

G8+5 is a joke. The G8 summit is a disgusting display of indulgence, greed, power and ignorance. Civil rights take a dive every time the event is hosted; with disobedience being greeted with an iron fist; people taking second place to the culture of power/money. It’s false economy.

Many of the public protestors are only trying to relive some sixties protester fantasy – they don’t understand the real issues. You cant beat the system with brute force. If you want to know if the government will hurt you in the name of ‘the greater public’s interest’, then, the answer is an unresounding, yes.

I’m sure it will only be a mater of time before the leaders and followers of the anti globalisation/establishment movement are chemically restrained by the copious amounts of mind altering substances freely and cheaply available, sadly. The prevalence and availability of drugs of dependance – both legal and illegal – in society is no mistake.

The power class/corporations have been destroying protestors for generations with the system/courts, drugs etc. Many good people have been destroyed for trying to do the right thing. You can got to prison for doing right as easily as wrong.

Solutions and recriminations. Heads will roll and people go to prison, but the initial wrongs will always transpire. The damage is done little by little and for the most parts puppets shoulder the resposibility.

You have and will see it repeated time and time again. Flaw of human nature or greed and delusion perpetrated by the ruling class/system/establishment? It’s obvious. Wake up from their dream.

Don’t hate the game, hate the player is a great diversionary tactic used by the ruling class.

Go out and find the documentary and book about Robert Strange McNamara called ‘The Fog of War’ – gives you an insight into the world of the ruling class. Robert Mcnamara: I think the human race needs to think about killing. How much evil must we do in order to do good.

  52. Robert Mcnamara: I was on the island of Guam in his – General Curtis LeMays’ – command in March 1945. In that single night, we burned to death one hundred thousand Japanese civilians in Tokyo. Men, women and children.
Interviever: Were you aware this was going to happen?
Robert Mcnamara: Well, I was part of a mechanism that, in a sense, recommended it.

The world establishment has much to answer for – time shows these people for the criminals they are.

I don’t think that murdering people like George Bush or Mac The Knife would solve a thing – they are only puppets of the establishment/power/ruling class. Anyone who truly believes that elected officials make the decisions that run our world is truly deluding themselves; they may do at the macro level, but not globaly. Plans for global social order and control are instigated decades in adavance.

Social manipulation takes generations. Manipulating and stupifying the minds of the masses has been a tool of the ruling class for generation upon generation. They utilise tools like the education, religion etc. It’s even easier to create and reinforce psychological constructs today with the internet and media. The culture of faith breeds ignorance – ignorance they bank on. The inherent good in humanity is being erroded by the greed of the few.

I’m surprised that George knows the wheel exists. He is a follower of a religion that tells him that the earth is only ten thousand years old, and probably flat at that. He’s a gambler on a losing streak.

I’m not against progress, but our irresponsible attitude toward it is leading to our premature destruction; it will ultimately destroy the biology that has evolved thus far. Much is already lost, never known.

On a much happier note – I was given a magnificent Wirehaired Fox Terrier pup the other day; we named him> Lively; he tears around and gets under your feet – he’s a real happy little chap. He’s trying to get friendly with the cat, but the cat won’t have any part of it for the time being.

If you know the breed, he looks like he’s smiling most of the time – great dogs.

    Wishing you all the best,
    Hysteron proteron

  53. just want to say that i agree with hysteron proteron.

as much as i hate the guy, bush is only a puppet. it’s the whole system that’s corrupt and although i try to do my bit in protest, i often feel it’s for nothing.

    sad. 🙁

[Just out of interest, Victor (as I know you’re in the UK): do you see him as more a Muffin the Mule-type character, or as one of the Flowerpot Men? – Features Editor]

  54. [Just out of interest, Victor (as I know you’re in the UK): do you see him as more a Muffin the Mule-type character, or as one of the Flowerpot Men? – Features Editor]

    Absolute classic, FEd!

  55. Hysteron proteron,

Beginning with “the last first”, congrats on the addition to your family. I remember your loss a few months back and have seen our own dog, Ginger, is showing signs of wear at 12 and we’re acutely aware there are fewer days ahead than behind.

Thanks for the book suggestion, I’ll check it out. Still doing good things here…but I tell you watching/reading the news makes me sick. As much as we see what is going on and as much as we are powerless to stop the corporate machine, I love laughing in spite of it all…. Sick and laughing…nice combination.

Remarkable likeness of George….but I beg to differ with you. The clown puppet has more personality…..

  56. Hey ! Do you see a half empty bottle or a half filled bottle ??? Let’s be positive, please, not always moaning…
