'Smile'

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: COMPETITION WINNER ANNOUNCED (05/02/07)

The winner is… Sylvie.

Well done, Sylvie. Please let us know where we should send your prize.

‘Smile’ is the next track waiting to fill your head with random words, so have a good listen to the eighth track from David’s ‘On An Island’ album and jot down whatever springs to mind.

We want to know five words this time (words only, no sentences) and we’d like them presented as follows:

Smooth
Moon
Idle
Light
Emotion

As always, you’re only allowed one attempt at this and the prize will go to the one person whose name is selected at random from a list, raffle-style.

If you guess any of my five words, you will be entered into the draw. If you guess two, three, four or all five of my words, then you will be entered two, three, four or five times and will, therefore, obviously have a greater chance of winning the prize.

The best of luck to you all. We’ll announce the winner on Monday, so you have all weekend to come up with some good words.

We’ll also be announcing the winner of EMI’s ‘Arnold Layne’ competition on Wednesday.

That’s all for another week. The next chat will be on Tuesday from 11AM (UK). Please see our calendar for details of future chatroom opening times.

So, Classic 21 will be broadcasting the Making of “The Division Bell” on Tuesday, February 13 at 3PM (CET) ! That will work in the same way as the Making of “About Face” Wow ! they love David Gilmour on Classic 21 !

– Features Editor]

    The best weekend to all

  11. I suspect as a result of the AL competition and an article I read recently about “Rock Star” camps I am driven to wonder if DG might do something similar? A long weekend with him and Guy just pootling about with guitars, learning some songs, sharing some anecdotes and experiences and getting some tips. I suspect DG may be too private for that kind of thing but I went to a similar two-day songwriting event with a guy called Martyn Joseph who I know quite well and it had a really good vibe to it with no-one getting too unneccessary.

It’s bound to be massively over-subscribed and very expensive but nonetheless could be fun.

Frank Par…. I agree… a compilation of all Davids’ collaborations would be amazing- though I’m sure the logistics would be a nightmare… and there would always be trouble cuz SOMETHING would be left off… i.e. “Where is Davids’ impromptu drunken blues performance of ‘Echos’ with Elvis at the 1974 after-party for an Arsenal match?”

    Have a great weekend all!
    Tim

  19. Thanks Paul,

  30. I just want to share what happen last nite while listening to smile.

I just bought a new bed yesterday. The bed I bought is to high for my wife and this is no joke. My wife has to use a small step ladder to climb in.

So as we were laying in bed last nite I asked my wife what 5 words would come to mind while listening to the song Smile. So as the song was playing I fell asleep. I woke up with this terrible sound of scream.

My wife got up to turn off the stereo and forgot how high she was and landed on her head. I heard more than 5 words from her that I will not share. But the bed is going back today so I can smile again..

    Take Care
    Thomas

[I hope your wife’s words fitted into our acrostic theme, Thomas… – Features Editor]

  31. Tim, I agree wholeheartedly. If David could perhaps, and Only, he would select the songs he wishes that be released to the public to be his favourites. PERIOD. End of discussion. I think?

    [Without doubt – Features Editor]

  32. I hope this is the right way,

    Shine,Mellow,Incredible,Love and Enjoyable……

    Motionless
    Insight
    Loving
    Endless

    Happy leisure
    ciao Elisabetta

  36. David has done so much work with so many music artists that it could not all fit into one CD package(either in terms of the amount of music you can put on a CD, or in terms of presenting a unified package with a mood running throughout). But a nice sampler series would be welcome!

    Disk One: Gilmour ROCKS!
    Disk Two: Gilmour gets mellow
Disk Three: Crosby, Gills and Nash (just joking)

You get the idea. Now, THAT idea has me drooling at the mouth. So, when’s it gonna hit the record stores?

    You get the idea.

  37. Hmmm, as my first entry is ineligible because I was too stupid to read the rules, here is a second attempt which I hope the nice Fed will allow.

    Soothing
    Mellifluous
    Intimate
    Lingering
    Empathetic

  38. FED, out ot topic I want to tell U and Bloggers what I am dreamed (I am not joking!) this night:

There was a blond very beautiful girl (the real copy of Paris Hilton) that told me; “Claudio, I am sorry but this year the DVD of on an island will not come out”

My answer: “But how can U say that?” and the copy of Paris Hilton: “Simply, I am the Fed”

So, I want only to say that normally my dreams come true, have you got something to say, FED (Paris)?

Thanks a lot for the answer.

    Claudio Ravenna Italy.

[That was more of a nightmare, wasn’t it? The DVD will be out this year, just not as early as you’d like it to be. It will be worth the wait, though. – Features Editor]

LOL! Thanks for making me smile today, John! Of course, I think your entry was the best! ha!

Thomas — I sure hope your wife is okay! That’s disconcerting to take a tumble like that.

    Happy Weekend, everyone!

  49. To date F’Ed, I have yet to guess one of your words for any of these On An Island tracks, but I refuse to give up. So here goes again:

    Thank You.

  51. Soooo…

Between now and next Wednesday DG will listen to the top three Arnold Layne interpretations… Wow.

Fingers crossed that at least one of the submissions from contributors of this blog is in the top three…

Whatever happens it was a fantastic competition which gave some of us an experience we’d never had before and for me, meet some very nice people I would call friends… 🙂

    Thanks again EMI and DG…

  52. David Gilmour

the greatest ever guitar solos composer in the history of music. And great humble musician and the wonderful person. And first and best guitar solo ever is ‘comfortably numb’.

Thank you David for everything, please contunue playing and writing beautiful music, and god bless you.

Hey F.Ed, that was a bit of an anti-climax yesterday – I thought your lot would bury them! At least today’s match made up for it but I was surprised how poor Spurs were at times though, and equally surprised how much they had spent in the last 2 years on players! I think they are 2nd behind Chelsea!! Only 1 place in the that trophy is going come May now me thinks (hope).

My real hope though is whether H’pool can win league 2!!! Come on the REAL Pool!! lol

    Take care,
    Dave

If you want, you can just hum along. You do know how to hum don’t you? You just put your lips together and Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

  56. The competition is now closed. Thank you all for entering.

    We’ll announce the winner tomorrow.

  57. Congratulations to Sylvie de Montréal. You are our latest winner.

Not only was your name selected at random from a very long list, but you actually guessed three of my five words.

Please let us know where we should send your prize by leaving your full name and address at the latest blog entry (don’t worry, it will not be published for all to see).

For the record, my words were: Smile, Mellow, Ideal, Love and Endless.
