IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: ‘ARNOLD LAYNE’ CONTEST WINNERS TO BE ANNOUNCED NEXT WEEK… HONEST

The competition winners will finally be announced on Friday 2 March (not Wednesday 28 February, as is stated on the contest page).

Good luck to all who entered and, again, please accept our apologies for the delay. We know that the wait hasn’t been much fun.

As you may have seen on our Latest News page, we’ve finally got a decent answer for all of you who sent in High Definition queries.

Just to clarify, there will be higher-resolution versions of ‘Remember That Night’ in both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray formats.

There will, of course, be a standard (double) DVD which will work on your usual DVD player, so you do not need to buy any additional equipment if you do not wish to do so.

Please be aware that the High Definition versions will not be released at the same time as the standard package – and please also bear in mind that the standard package will not be out before May.

We’ll have release dates for you as soon as possible, but there is still much work to be done, so please don’t expect to hear any official confirmation for quite a while yet.

Before anyone asks, sadly, we still have nothing to report on the ‘Arnold Layne’ contest. We guarantee to let you know what’s going on as soon as possible and would like to take this opportunity to apologise again for the unease caused by this delay.

The next chat is scheduled for Friday and doors will be open between 11AM and 2PM (UK). Everyone is very welcome.

  1. So happy to hear it’ll be available in HD! GREAT NEWS!! Sooooooooo looking forward to it.

  2. hi

finally, the decision is here : no Gdansk concert on a 3rd utopic dvd :((( . If the footage exists, it will never be edited, even in the future ?

    take care

  3. Is that a picture of Phil with a Black Beauty? I don`t recall him playing one of those during the tour. Then again my eyes were watching what David was playing throughout the show!

  4. Good news for the heavy-listeners…the hq disc will be surely amazing.

I’d like to remember here, for a little moment if I can,the cowboy Bill Carson, who passed away some day ago.He was one of the fathers of the Fender Stratocaster, our beloved instrument, and I think that all guitarist have to say ‘thank you’ to that man.

    Goodbye cowboy!

  5. I’ll bet real money that Erin and the Blogger crew’s meeting with guy is going to be on it….

Damn, I’m actually getting really psyched! I thought I got this out of my system already….

  6. Great news, FEd!

I am considering using the higher-resolution versions of “Remember That Night” to justify purchasing both a Blu-Ray and a HD-DVD player. Can anyone help me present that idea to my wife as absolutely essential? 🙂

[Is that a picture of Phil with a Black Beauty? I don`t recall him playing one of those during the tour.]

Adrian: I believe that guitar is the same one Phil played for David’s appearance on Later with Jools Holland.

  7. Good Luck to all, and I still believe there is no rush really. I’m enjoying the anticipation wholeheartedly.

And yes, Phil uses the black Gibson on a backing solo to? Can’t remember right at this moment. On the tip of my tongue, dang. Help!!

  8. I’ll definitely be buying both =)

In regards to the Making of OAI documentary…what is the EPK that is mentioned on the latest news page?

[It’s the Electronic Press Kit used to give the media a taste of the album. You can still see it on the On An Island page. Please click your name below for that. – Features Editor]

  9. Oh dearie me, I smell a technical debate coming on. Suppose “Remember That Night” will not be available in VHS? And Blu-Ray is OK but what about Sting-Ray?

    Ian Pearson

  10. Ciao

what to say? You could have not done better than that…(well, three DVDs? four DVDs? five DVDs?….:-))

  11. CAPTION:

As Phil gets a shot at a trademark solo Mark Brickman is debating what lighting to use.

” Should I use a high definition Strobe or a simple blue ray?????????”

That Nou Camp was nicely pitched young Craig, nicely pitched indeed.

  12. I guess after last night Fed will be feeling rather good and possibly even generous . . . now would be a good time to try to wangle things out of him folks!

  13. Hello,

First of all: HAPPY BIRTHDAY PETER. All the best for you

Good news about formats, I assume that standard DVD will be the first out, am I correct?

I decided to wait with investments in new equipment, because it is still too little to watch in High Definition at least in Poland, and I also do not like to formats and it is difficult to guess which will be better in longer term. So I’m currently interested in Standard version.

[You’re right: the first ‘Remember That Night’ will be the standard version and May is the most optimistic forecast. A May release is by no means a certainty, however. – Features Editor]

  14. [Is that a picture of Phil with a Black Beauty? I don`t recall him playing one of those during the tour.]

Phil played a beautiful black Gibson during the solos in the song “On an Island”, duetting with David.

  15. Hello,

Wow time flies been a longtime since I ever posted something here, least I think I have posted before 🙂

Now to convince my wonderfoul wife that buying a new High D or Blue Ray layer is justified, any suggestions greatly appreciated.

  16. I’m glad to hear it will be available in both HD formats. I’ll see if I can avoid purchasing the standard DVD and wait until I can experience the full ‘HD’ effect. I don’t mind waiting, I’m sure I’ve got the willpower!

  17. LG makes a dual format player (is there anything that gal can’t do? 😉 that plays both HD-DVD and Blueray. It’s called the ‘Super Multi Blue Player (Model No. BH100)’.

Very handy… if like me you are undecided on which format to go for.

  18. I must say I’m looking forward to the release of Remember that Night more than Pulse & everytime I read about what’s going to be on it the more I can’t wait. But of course I will wait just like the good little boy I am!!!

Note: I chose Shawshank Redemption because not only is it one of the most underrated films ever made, it also shows that no matter what shite we go through in our lives there is always hope.

Sometimes you have to crawl out of the deepest, sh*ttiest hole to find it; but there is always HOPE!!!

Also loved the cinematography in it, the soundtrack & the acting of Tim Robbins & the 2nd God after David Gilmour, Morgan Freeman.

Right, I’ll get off my soapbox now!!

    All the best to everyone.

  19. Thank you FED for your kind answer, I’m easy with release date of DVD. But I like to read more info about it. Keep them coming, if you can of course.

    Tomasz

  20. Do you think it is inevitable that someone will purchase the blu-ray or HD version, try to put it in their standard DVD player and then come on the blog to complain that they didn’t know???

    Andrew

  21. FED, please include subtitles in Spanish, for all fans here in Latin America.

    greetins from Peru

    Bye

  22. ciao,

no one asked my opinion this time (as any other time, hehehe) but I have this strong urge…Well, titles are titles and it is the content that counts (not always: “the dark side of the moon” and the cover are fundamental to its success).

“Rememeber that night” is a title I don’t like much, well I don’t like at all…but I am slowly getting used to it. Even if I don’t like I understand I am not in any marketing department of any company so I think it is probably a good choice (but no one, I presume, mentioned that title in one of our previous posts about that, “rememeber that post”?). In fact when I think to it I “sing” it as these are the very first words of on an island (and as words of that sing together with the melody I “love” them, as you english people say).

Moreover it makes totally sense for a live dvd. But I obviously preferred my suggestion even if a bit cheesy (a pocketful of songs). If you don’t know “remember that night” are words of a song it is quite flat indeed. who knows if it will be a winning title?

And my question to other bloggers is: do you like it as a title? I am interested in your opinions

    Ciao

  23. [And Blu-Ray is OK but what about Sting-Ray? -Ian]

After last night’s art exhibit, I was thinking, Man Ray.

  24. Good! Even if I don’t understand the difference between a normal dvd and an HD. So, I think i’ll do better to choose the normal one, before discover the HD can’t run on my Dvd player!

Will you inform us also about the setlist and the shows the tracks are taken from?

    L!

    [Maybe. – Features Editor]

  25. Nate is absolutely correct about LG releasing the Model No. BH100, but I don’t think it will be available for another couple of months yet. My opinion is to wait until the second and third generation of these players are out and available for a reasonable price. I believe the BH100 will be listing for around $1000.

About a year ago at this time the first HD-DVD players had made their way to market. I had the distinct displeasure of working with Toshiba’s first model (The AD1000A, or something). Because of the large buffer size and mass of data, the HD-DVD player is more of a CPU that a mere ‘player’. The bootup of the player, I kid you not, takes about two minutes. The launching of the disc takes another minute. The original HD-DVD single-layer disc output was 720p, quite a bit less than the standard 1080p, which can be found on Blu-Ray players (and discs). I believe DVD-9 (as Fed told us) now allows for 1080p from HD-DVD discs.

Another caveat is the only way to see 1080p in true digital HD is through an HDMI cable. Thus, your monitor must be 1080p capable and have an HDMI input to properly view true 1080 content. I haven’t seen anything on the market yet that does 1080p reproduction that costs less than $1000. By the 2007 holiday season, new players will be out and will, hopefully, be far less expensive than they are today.

Yet, if HD video follows the same route as HD audio (DVD-A, and SACD) we have more than a year to go before any of this ‘new’ technology will even figure itself out before a new, better, higher-definition, format comes along. I’m not holding my breath.

I will say that the best video reproduction I’ve ever seen has come from a 1080p Blu-Ray player. As good as 35mm film, and dare I say, could be compared with IMAX, though I’ve never seen the two side by side (with the same content) so really. . .I’m just theorizing here. . .

  26. HD, Blu-Ray…..I hate all this mumbo jumbo, to confusing and to expensive LOL…I am happy with just the standard DVD coming out.

    Renee B.
    Fontana, Ca USA

  27. HD…Blu Ray…

for those of you thinking of buying one/both of the above don’t you also need to ensure your television is HD capable as well?

I’ll wait a year or so and wait for the prices to drop before I sally forth and negotiate the vending of some high tech equipment me thinks.. 🙂

  28. In my searches for vast amounts of information that I’m not sure what to do with, I thought I’d provide a link for those willing to be more geeky (geekie?) than I.

[You can search for HD-DVD there, too (over on the left-hand side of the page). Thanks, Marcus. I’m good, but I can only create one link, I’m afraid. – Features Editor]

PM fails miserably at the “I wanna look like Gilmour competition.” Points were deducted for wrong hair color, long-sleeve black t-shirt and last but not least David has a goldtop LP not a black beauty.

  30. rumour has it this could be a good time to wrangle things out of you re last night’s result. can you put me an order in for a free hot off the press serial no oooooooo1 signed copy before it is released……? wats the chance Fed, only joking mate. it was a great result last night and bellemy and J A riise worked together. a good result mate. still alot of work to do though back at home eh…?

thanks for the detailed update mate. hope you are doing ok mate. thanks again for all you do for us. its above and beyond my friend. see ya later.

    [Rumours, rumours… – Features Editor]

  31. Thank God I don’t have to buy a new DVD player. My hubby has been grumpy about all the Gilmour stuff I’ve bought over the past year. I tell him, it’s just money and that when David only comes out with stuff once in 12 yrs, I gotta stock up while I can. Of course, we all know that this last tour got David so excited, that we won’t have to wait 12 more years 😉 But my hubby doesn’t know that.

I told him last night about the custom Strat, he says he’ll buy it for me, as long as I’m in a band by then. Not even a good band, just a band.

I’m going to be in Connecticut the weekend of March 10th. I wanted to see if any Irregulars want to get together for a brew. C’mon Mike, Angelo, it’s just right next door. =) Let me know!

Sorry to be so off topic FEd, I’m in a funk today. Maybe it’s the rain.

    ~Erin

  32. FED I came back to home this morning after 3 days of work out of Ravenna.

Great news about the DVD (both the formats…unbelievable!) now the problem is to know what may be the best format!

and now FED, U have to be honest…I was the first one that told U: “The reds are better than Barcelona……!”. The problem may be that the next opposing team could be Milan…..

  33. Since I’m an unabashed geek, I’ll likely be acquiring all three versions of Remember That Night.

I used to have a Laser Disk of Delicate Sound, and I wish now that I kept it since DSoT never made it to DVD.

  34. Lovely photo of Phil and the Les Paul. Seems that most guitars look great in black!

Those HIWATT heads in the background reminded me that Guitar Player recently published a positive review of the David’s signature amp, the DG103.

Apparently they are very loud, but clean. There is a lower power (50W) version available as well.

As for the HD version of the DVD, I don’t mind waiting for it. I’m hoping that the price of players will drop a lot within the next year (they already have – they were bloody expensive before Christmas).

    Cheers!

  35. Phil: “Well, if I keep on rehearsing I’m sure Bryan will call to discuss the Roxy tour”.

    Jeremy

  36. Phil, thinking vigorously: “Concentrate, you oaf. Don’t muck it up in front of all these people! Think! Think! Ninth fret, D string, drone B, twenty to go, or is it nineteen?”

  37. I have to correct something I wrote earlier:

[The original HD-DVD single-layer disc output was 720p, quite a bit less than the standard 1080p, which can be found on Blu-Ray players (and discs). I believe DVD-9 (as Fed told us) now allows for 1080p from HD-DVD discs.]

The original source material I used was 720p.

DVD-9 is the second of four storage descriptions for the DVD-Video format. Yes, these are the regular DVD’s we use everyday. DVD-9 is a single sided, dual layer DVD. Let me explain: there are four categories of storage for the DVD consortiums’ Digital Versatile Disc format; DVD-4, -9, -15, & -18. Each number corresponds to the number of GB (Gigabytes) of storage on each format. DVD-4 is single side, single layer. DVD-9 is single side, double layer. DVD-18 is double side, double layer.

Single side, single layer HD-DVD’s (15GB capacity) can store 5.4 hrs of HD video content @1080p.

    I’m sorry for any confusion.

Anyways, click my name for the new, advanced, format that is going to take over in a couple of years anyways.

  38. What matters the most is that there is a new DVD of David Gilmour to be released some time this year.

    Hooray!!!

  39. Shame on the AFP for printing an article about Roger’s tour and mispelling David’s name /every single time/. While one might be mildly forgiving regarding whole Dave/David thing because the direct quote of RW in the article uses the former (actually, he used both), spellchecking is an important journalistic tool, same as fact-checking.

    Shaaaaaaame.

    ‘Nix.

  40. Higher fi plus more stuff, nice. Choices too.

Okay the custom strat with signature amp-great gift set for either parent. Effects units optional, sure to please.

  41. Lots of Techno stuff Marcus, good job. The music industry changes all the time and as I recall, David has rolled along beforehand to lead the way. My guess is Fed, if the newest technological discs are coming out 6 months later, does that mean we are sticking around here and innitiating the newest Irregulars too? You’ll have to put up with us some more.”Sounds good to me”.

P.S. I’m sending you a pencil sharpener for your next birthday to hone up those pointy sticks.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

  42. [After last night’s art exhibit, I was thinking, Man Ray.- Marcus]

X RAY is best. How could I have forgotten that. Every home should have radiograph reader. And I still think smelly vision is underrated. Sorry Fed for being silly but celebrating kitchen completeness and you know what thats like!

    Ian Pearson

  43. I’m happy that there will be a standard DVD Set.

For my part I believe both HD Formats are some kind of dead birth…

Nice Pic of Phil and some really nice equipment… I want to play with that too 😉

  44. Happy Friday,

Firstly, thanx for all the good wishes for yesterday. They were very much appreciated.

I think I am now on what is known as the ‘downhill slope’.

But I do have enough vouchers put aside now for David’s forthcoming DVD and Porcupine Tree’s next album due in April.

    Pete – Coventry

PS: I see Bellamy got a hole in one the other night Fed.

  45. FEd! Yes, you beat me … but we´ll get you guys back at Anfield!

Now, about all the spanish speaking fans out there. I just wanted to offer my translating services should they ever be required. Im 100% fluent in both spanish and english and can also work in portuguese and french. If theres ever a proposal to go multilingual I´d be more than glad to help out. Heck I´ll even help for the spanish subtitles for the DVD (yes yes I know its a long shot, but for credentials Ive done it quite a few times with books and International Film Festivals!)

See you in the chat, and hopefully we´ll have news about the contest soon!

    All the best,
    PB

  46. ….no great work can be created in an instant….

and I’m sure that “Remember that night” will be great and perfect in all the aspects.

have a very nice weekend to F.Ed.and friends

    bye bye/ciao

  47. It seems there is a second person using the name ‘Dan’ in yesterday’s blog. Just to clarify, I’m the one who “diss-ed” the Stanley Kubrick movie for its length and pacing. Those other comments are from another Dan. Not that I’m complaining, mind you, just clarifying.

  54. Hi mates,

I read the italian article yestarday and in Italy it was the “slowness-day” against stress,hard-work….I don’t think PF and DG music is just relaxing it’s always envolving it’s a breath of the soul. Some Beatles music is for relax or Mozart but…if I can, I choose the lesser evil the full sound track of Zabriskie Point.

    A kiss from Rome

  55. “Angelo, what have I ever done to make you treat me so disrespectfully?”

Very funny, Angelo, you’re quite the comedian. I got a good laugh out of that — not exactly sure why, but I did. I needed that. Fed, you’re a bad, bad man…

We had to put our dog to sleep today. Monty was a 10 year old Terrier. He was found to have terminal bone cancer in his right hind leg — it was all very sudden. There were no real options for treatment because of the aggressive nature of the cancer — it was best to end his pain. It’s all been a terrible shock. It hasn’t been a very good day.

    Regards,
    Hysteron proteron

  56. Thanks for the advice Ronny. I do try to enjoy each day as it comes. I try not to take life for granted. And I try not to think to much about the future. I love the idea of ‘slowness day’ though. Maybe ‘slowness year’ would be better.

  57. Hysteron,

My deepest condolences, hope this can help in some way…

    The Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together…

  58. I was in a video shop the other day and looked at the HD DVD selection. It looked like all the HD DVDs were also labeled that they could play in a regular DVD player as well. Is this correct? Marcus Buick will probably be able to help answer this one.

Also, how limited in quantity will the DG Fender guitar be? I noticed that Fender is releasing an Andy Summers Telecaster in the 3rd quarter of 2007 with a limited production of only 250. The Fender website stated that the product is totally sold out. It hasn’t even been made yet and totally sold out already. Apparently Andy himself has been using the prototype for their current performances.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

[I’d have thought that HD-DVD players will also play regular DVDs, Andrew. We can’t say anything about the custom Strat yet, however. We’ll share the details as soon as we can. – Features Editor]

  59. [I was in a video shop the other day and looked at the HD DVD selection. It looked like all the HD DVDs were also labeled that they could play in a regular DVD player as well. Is this correct? Marcus Buick will probably be able to help answer this one.]

Most HD-DVDs are manufactured with one side of the disk in HD and one side of the disk in standard DVD format. So a regular DVD player can play the standard side of the disk, but not the HD side.

All currently available HD-DVD players will also play your current standard DVDs. Some do a pretty decent job of upconverting a standard DVD to HD resolution on HDMI capable displays.

  60. Hi FEd,

    How was your week?

I missed the chats this week, what a drag. Maybe I’ll catch it next week with the later hours.

I hope your weekend is a blissful one.

  61. Sir Pete of Coventry and Adrian Kavanagh !

Myself and fellow bloggers Matty and Andy are meeting up for a drink next Friday (2nd) and wondered if you wanted to join us. Any other Midlands based bloggers are also welcome.

We are meeting in Birmingham, at the Wellington, on Bennett’s Hill at 8:30. It’s five minutes walk from New Street Station.

Hope to see you there !

    Martin.

  62. [And my question to other bloggers is: do you like it as a title? I am interested in your opinions]

    Piergiorgio,

As I am officially hogging the credit for suggesting the title, I think it is a marvellous one !

  63. Hey Hysteron, you know you always bring out the best in me…. 😉

Sorry about your loss my friend. I’m glad to have brought you some comfort on an otherwise lousy day…

  64. Yes, Tom B, he wrote that one and The Man with Two Brains, among other things. I always love to hear when someone finds that underrated movie as funny as I do.

…and just remember Tom…”All dames are alike: they reach down your throat and they can grab your heart, pull it out and they throw it on the floor, step on it with their high heels, spit on it, shove it in the oven and cook the sh*t out of it. Then they slice it into little pieces, slam it on a hunk of toast, and serve it to you and then expect you to say, “Thanks, honey, it was delicious.”

That’s just a quote, not the actual opinion of the poster or anyone associated with this blog (at least that we know of)

  65. Hi Fed,

HP, I am sorry to hear about Monty. Pets are just as much family as kin, and in some cases more so. Those kinds of decisions are never easy, and you did the right thing. I just watched my in-laws go through the same process with their black lab that had suffered a stroke. They had to put her down, and it hit all of my wife’s family hard, including me. Please accept my condolances and a cyber hug.

I really enjoyed chatting today. I don’t get to make as many of them as I would like, but such is life. I am still thinking about fruit and french words. I always enjoy chat every time I make it. Thanks to the irregulars and other visitors for making it so enjoyable.

    Have a good weekend, all

The DVD sounds like it’s coming along nicely. Good good. Can’t wait to own it.

  67. [I’d have thought that HD-DVD players will also play regular DVDs, Andrew. We can’t say anything about the custom Strat yet, however. We’ll share the details as soon as we can. – Features Editor]

Actually what I was saying that it looked like the discs that were labeled HD-DVD stated that they could also be played in a regular DVD player. Which means they’ll play but you just can’t get the HD features without an HD player. That’s what I’m trying to confirm. HD players should be backward compatible.

Looking forward to hearing more on the strat.

    Thanks.

  68. [It looked like all the HD DVDs were also labeled that they could play in a regular DVD player as well. Is this correct? – Andrew]

I can help on this one Andrew.

Now, I don’t know about all HD DVD’s but, there is a double-sided HD DVD hybrid format that stores standard DVD-Video (480p) on one side, for regular DVD players, and HD DVD video (1080p) on the other side for HD DVD players.

The HD DVD format can also use current, red laser, DVD-5, -9, -15 and -18 GB capacity discs as storage media, but you can’t view the HD content in a standard DVD player.

Of the three current HD DVD players on the market, RCA’s HDV5000, and both Toshiba models, the HDXA1, and the HDA2, all play standard (420p) DVD-Videos.
