No 'Echoes'

ab14_blog.jpg

Following speculation that ‘Echoes’ could be shown as part of David’s ‘Live from Abbey Road’ set, we remind you that only three tracks will be broadcast and confirm that they will be ‘Take A Breath’, ‘Smile’ and ‘On An Island’.

The surprise ‘Echoes’ will definitely not be featured in the programme and will forever remain a special memory for those who were fortunate enough to be in the studio that day in August.

There will also be some chat about who is in the band, the making of the ‘On An Island’ album and how ‘Smile’ was written.

So, if you run a fansite, do feel free to lazily copy the following word-for-word (as you do so very often): ‘Echoes’ isn’t going to be included in David’s televised ‘Live from Abbey Road’ set.

The same applies to the US broadcast.

The running order of shows will be exactly the same in the US – as is set out on the Live from Abbey Road website – so the episode with David will be the eighth show, as in the UK.

When we can confirm the date of the US broadcast, we will let you know. The series begins in June.

We’ll also let you know just as soon as any announcements are made as to the series being broadcast elsewhere around the world.

The chatroom will be open from 4PM (UK) today if you want your final fix for another week. If you can’t make this one, dates of future chat sessions can be found, as always, on our calendar.

Have a good weekend, all.

  1. May I be the first to say im very disappointed that this song isn’t on the show, I was really looking forward to hearing it.

But at least we have the other songs, still can’t wait to see the show.

  2. that´s incredible. I will never fully understand the reasons behind such an omission. I feel utterly sad now.

I guess that seeing take a breath for the nth time will make it. or not?

[Let me help you understand. ‘Echoes’ was an impromptu jam, for fun, to close a long, repetitive studio session as the film crew were packing away their recording and lighting equipment (as was the case in Pompeii). The format for all artists is three songs per show – and that’s what you’ll get. We’re telling you right now that ‘Echoes’ is not going to be included before the rumour mill starts churning out speculation and your hopes are raised. David appeared on this show on the basis of ‘On An Island’, so surely it should be quite feasible that he would perform songs from ‘On An Island’ instead of simply regurgitating Floyd classics for anybody’s nostalgic approval. – Features Editor]

  3. I wish The Blue had been included, then again, I wouldn’t like to drop any of the three tracks that will be on the show. Can’t wait to see the show, 6 weeks and 12 hours to go and counting……

  4. So..erm…is Echoes going to be on the Abbey Road show? Only joking, I just thought it would be fun to wind you up, I couldn’t resist it! The programme looks as if it’s going to be a treat, not only David’s show but the others that are planned.

Anyways, gotta go play footie, oh the hard life of being a student

  5. I just got both US and UK vinyl versions of Arnold Layne in the mail yesterday. The first records I have bought in many a moon. I had forgotten what a nice sensation having a record in hand was. Plus it is great not to have to use a microscope to read the print on the back…for those aging eyes ;-)) Especially with the US version which is 10 in. Will give a spin later and let you know how it sounds.

    Cheers, Howard

  6. [Speaking of guitarists, has anyone heard of Tommy Emmanuel? This Aussie rocks to no end. Check him out. – frank par]

Well I can say yes, many many years ago, he used regular a certain beer garden in Newcastle, Australia and play a bit for us locals.

He also hails from the same area as me, the Hunter Valley in NSW, Australia.

He is so definitely worth a listen.

    Karen.

  7. Sorry, I just woke up and I was a little bit arrogant in the previous post.

I just wanted to say that maybe David should consider making the recording available by other means, if only because of the intrinsic historical values that such a version of echoes has.

  8. Tried to vote on the Norwegian website but just can’t seem to get past the language barrier – I think my brain is just fried from the long week at work. Will try again over the next few days. Matt’s translation document should help.

Sounds like both the US and UK are having some nasty weather – stay safe everyone and have a great weekend. Hope to catch some of you in chat next week.

  9. CAPTION :

As the closely guarded Echoes acoustic version is under 24hr protection we are delighted to bring you the 1st official changing of the guard parade live from abbey road.

  10. I echo most of the sentiments voiced so far (not all) and if it’s not aired so be it (though I must say I had been kinda looking forward to echoes).

However, I shall console myself with the fact that a full blown DVD is imminent 8)

  11. Shame that Echoes won’t be shown. Perhaps More 4/Channel 4 could consider showing the extra songs on their website immediately after the TV broadcast or as a ‘push your red button’ extended feature.

Over the year of the DG site & Blog, it is noticeable that, in general, you seem to slightly resent fan sites. I know some are occasionally over enthusiastic and carry unconfirmed news but rather this than nothing at all.

I don’t have a Neurological Disorder but avidly visit one most days for any latest news and I greatly appreciate their service and coverage of PF and related news.

Please don’t tar them all with the same brush.

Their aim and your aim is broadly the same.

[That may often be quite true, but plagiarism is still plagiarism and idle journalism confuses and disappoints its readership with little regard for the consequences. – Features Editor]

  12. Perhaps it could be included as an extra on the forthcoming Live from the Royal Albert Hall DVD…?

Out of interest, how long was the acoustic performance of Echoes?

[No more than… Ten minutes? – Features Editor]

  13. Well, I never thought I would be excited over television…….until THIS!!!

Thank you for posting these details of the show’s contents. I look forward to the behind the scenes material.

    Cheers,

  14. “Acoustic Echoes” would be a great add-on to the upcoming DVD. Don’t worry, F’Ed, I know this is a pipe dream.

I suspect that it will be released at some point, just not now. As “Echoes” is one of my favorite tracks from any band, I’ll be thrilled when that day does finally arrive.

  15. Dear FEd,

What no “The Blue”? What a beautiful song that is and was played on that day. David’s breathtaking guitar solo was so lovely.

As for that snippet of “Echoes” being played, even though it is consigned to the memory banks of all who were to witness, I hope I managed to convey the atmosphere in my rather detailed report.

    Best regards.

    Julie

  16. To those who are disappointed,

It was very brief…not even close to half the song by any stretch of the imagination. It was a great surprise/treat and that’s it. It may sound like sacrilege, but we may have hyped Echoes up too much. Sometimes you can get caught up in the excitement of the treat and forget the wonderful five course dinner that preceded it.

I’m sorry if I played a role I that. The expectation snowballed way out of control, and, in retrospect, our going on about it became more of a tease to those who won’t get to partake in the treat.

I don’t offer that as an empty condolence…it really was brief…

[Angelo, there’s really no need. All the reports made it quite clear that it was something spontaneous and fun (and incomplete, as you say) at the end of a very tiring day. There should never have been any assumption that it would be televised, although we fully understood the initial hopefulness, as we now understand the disappointment. It’s the hostility of some to the decision that sticks in the throat. So, please, just take it somewhere else. – Features Editor]

  17. May I be another very disappointed person as well!!!

I too was looking forward to hear it!!! I was also looking forward to The Blue as well as those three other songs have been played on the AOL sessions.

I am still looking forward to these versions of these songs don’t get me wrong but I was so looking forward to acoustic Echoes!!!!

    Never mind.

Hey FED it isn’t your fault and can I say that these songs might be included on the Live From Abbey Road DVD so maybe all is not lost!!!

  18. “No Echoes”

I figure that this is due to the unpolished nature of the song at the session…a pity since it is probably the most interesting one to hear.

    Cheers, Howard

  19. [So, if you run a fansite, do feel free to lazily copy the following word-for-word (as you do so very often): ‘Echoes’ isn’t going to be included in David’s televised ‘Live from Abbey Road’ set. – Features Editor]

Wow ! Well said !, so funny and so true, Bravo, Fed !

    Michèle

[Thank you very much. It’s nice to see that someone else has a keen eye for detail and respect for professional integrity. I was beginning to think that it was just me. – Features Editor]

  20. This is me not being terribly surprised.

The record industry in general, fueled by the radio stations of the past and present and now the music video stations (that oddly don’t seem to show many music videos anymore), have long since held the concept that if something is more than 3 minutes long, it’s not worth viewing, because OH NOES!, someone will change the station or channel.

There is little room for truly great songs if they’re not in that nice and neat little package. You’d never find Yes’ ‘Close to the Edge’ or ‘Ritual’ being aired either, if they’d done one of those sessions. (Remember Billy Joel’s ‘The Entertainer’ for a basic idea of what I’m talking about here, he sings about this time limit on music in terms of airplay.)

I think that many people can agree that music should not be limited by time or some mindless radio station listener’s attention span… and I’ve often wondered if this industry-set limit has since had an effect on people’s attention spans and their lack of patience for anything that takes more than a few minutes… just look at the abominable concept of ‘speed dating’… as if you’re gonna find someone you like in five minutes. Feh.

Me, I’ll go back to watching Lawrence of Arabia or 2001 with the long artsy shots (with no dialogue, gasp, horror!) and let the mainstream continue to be silly.

Queuing up ‘Echoes’ at the ‘Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite’ caption in 2001…

    ‘Nix.

[Three great songs will be broadcast, none of which last three minutes or less. Again, you’re missing the point. The point is that this is David Gilmour, not Pink Floyd. ‘On An Island’ is a solo album, the album has been a great success, David would probably not be appearing on the programme were it not for the success of this album and its songs are relevant to the here and now. It’s that simple. You may also like to consider that, at long last, David is finally getting the recognition he deserves as a solo artist, after so much success with Pink Floyd and as a hired hand. Why he should be expected – by either fans or television directors – to perform songs from his past, when the present is clearly of greater significance, is beyond me. – Features Editor]

  21. I think it’s great that we are finally getting to see some of these shows in the US. Thanks for the heads-up, and I’m looking forward to June (along with many other US bloggers!)

    ~Susan

  22. [Ten minutes? – Features Editor]

Not even close…more like five tops….at least that’s my memory of it.

I, too, can understand the disappointment, but hostility? Damn, it’s not worth getting so angry about.

Now Steve’s impromptu “Play That Funky Music White Boy” deserves play time somewhere for sure…. 😉

  23. yes, i’d have liked to have seen acoustic ‘echoes’. but we shouldn’t be moaning about not being able to see it here. how might david feel reading that?! it’s disrespectful to david and to his solo songs. that’s why we’re all here. there’d be no blog without ‘on an island’.

i’m disappointed by some of you yet again.

david, i’m sorry for some of these selfish comments. i can’t wait to see you on the 2nd of march.

  24. Well, maybe the live Echoes will show up on the OAI dvd from the recent tour, hopefully. And maybe the glass thingy from Shine On too. Crossing my fingers.Whatever happens, happens. Just gotta wait and see.

  25. Let not drink the all Kool~Aid kids, your opinions are justified.

The folks want “Echoes” in any incarnation for very valid reasons but shouldn’t expect it on the
    ‘Live from Abbey Road’ set.

If, legally permitting David is able to release this somewhere down the road he should answer the fan’s call and do so.

[Your opinions are justified and are almost always warmly welcomed, but nobody should use David’s blog to tell David what he should do. There is a distinct difference between expressing a personal opinion and making an unreasonable demand. – Features Editor]

  26. I can’t hang for the chat, but a great weekend to all….and Congrats to Par & Rudders on their A.L.!

I’ve registered but I’ll be hard pressed to get the time to get something uploaded in time….

    Aw, shucks…

  27. [Three great songs will be broadcast, none of which last three minutes or less. Again, you’re missing the point. The point is that this is David Gilmour, not Pink Floyd. – Features Editor]

Oh, the point is taken and completely understood, don’t worry. Please forgive me if I also suspect ‘time’ (no pun intended) may have played a part in that. I can still grumble about the mainstream’s lack of attention spans, can’t I? 😀

Awaiting the apartment inspector with looooooads of glee…

  28. OK a spanner in the works.

im not sure how an acoustic Echoes would sound so im not that disapointed.

I think may be it was David & crew just having fun which may happen when ever they get together in a studio, great for those lucky enough to have witnessed but not meant for general consumption & i am still jealous to have missed out going to Abbey Road. I suppose it would have been great to have seen the whole set, warts & all. David must have thought it was n’t up to his high standard for one reason or another.

i will say this David…please dont omit the full blown RAH echoes from the tour DVD what ever you do.

have a good week end every body

  29. Sure I would have like to heard Echoes…but for goodness sakes, did you (ones who are still expressing dismay) read FEd’s explaination? Did it sink in? Makes perfect sense to me.

Shall we go on that Leno should have let David do a whole hour?

Wow, I’m cranky…see you in chat!

  30. Fair enough FEd, and thanks for the answer.

To be honest, David fully deserves the recognition he is taking as a solo artist and should enjoy it to the maximum.

I hope it has been a wonderful year for him too, which i suspect has been.

  31. [You may also like to consider that, at long last, David is finally getting the recognition he deserves as a solo artist, after so much success with Pink Floyd and as a hired hand. Why he should be expected – by either fans or television directors – to perform songs from his past, when the present is clearly of greater significance, is beyond me. – Features Editor]

i love that. i wish he would have done some songs from his 1st 2 albums, especially ‘about face’, in lieu of some of the floyd tunes he did on tour. i really would have loved to see ‘murder especially or maybe ‘near the end’ or ‘out of the blue’ and was really surprised that nothing from’about face’ was played.

However, who really cares. That is David f*cking Gilmour right there in front of you playing and singing. I never ever got over that feeling when i saw him live. I would just be smiling from ear to ear for months before and then after the shows…as most of you are.

  32. what a cool memory for those fortunate few. saw the paul simon version last week, very good format and a great show.

ok to post a link to the blog? was thinking you’d get more readers.

my 40th this year, if Mr Gilmour wants to do an acoustic number for me and my memory it would be more than cool :)))

[It’s entirely up to you where you mention us. Thanks very much for the thought. – Features Editor]

  33. Happy Friday,

It would have been good, however……..

For those who have not already got it (and I guess not many) can I avert your attention to the Pompeii DVD. The most awesome version of Echoes I have ever heard/seen.

    Pete – Coventry

  34. Sad to hear that “Echoes” will not be on the list..it is such a beautiful piece, well they all are.

    Thanks for the update, FEd.

    Have a wonderful weekend all!

  35. Caption;

Guy to Phil, I wonder how may times does that poor Fed has to remind people that Echoes was done just for fun at the end of the show as reported months ago.

Fed I hope that you’re team wins this weekend.

    Take Care,
    Thomas

[Thanks very much, Thomas. I’m going up to Liverpool this weekend, so I really hope we win. It’ll be a very long journey home if we don’t. – Features Editor]

  36. [Why David should be expected – by either fans or television directors – to perform songs from his past, when the present is clearly of greater significance, is beyond me. – Features Editor]

    Thaaaank youuuuuuuu….

How many times have I heard Gilmour express throughout his lifetime: “A true artist must firstly and fore mostly do his work to please himself, according to his personal conviction of standards; otherwise he is not being true to himself, but only placating to a stagnant society.”??? (He would consequentially be committing the disservice of straight out lying to the world.)

Let the Artist-Persona carry out his God-appointed service to his society as the herald of new visions and evolutions of truths intended.

In other words, society needs to allow artists to render forward –for Heaven’s sake and for its own.

May sound too philosophically high-minded for some, but simply quoting your claimed archetypal idol, people.

So there…..get over it quickly, please.

  37. Im just glad we are getting to see it at all in the US. thats amazing to me so i will be happy with whatever they play.

I agree Fed. he is trying to promote the solo thing and yes he does deserve the recognition of his solo work and it is great, So is the David Gilmour album from earlier, but you have to remember we all love him in Pink Floyd as well and those songs have been with us for a long time

now you know they’re favorites by now but im sure the same will come of these new songs as well. they are already off to a great start. Just one person’s opinion.

Well have a great weekend everyone and hope to see you in chatroom today.

    Respectifully Clarice

  38. Whichever tracks would have been chosen someone would have complained, we’re just never satisfied.

Even an entire show of just David and there would be somebody still bloody moaning, such is the way if the world.

I am sorry that Echoes isn’t going to be shown but it does make it all the more special to have been there, terribly selfish I know but in this case I think it’s allowed.

    Have a nice weekend folks.

  39. [Your opinions are justified and are almost always warmly welcomed, but nobody should use David’s blog to tell David what he should do. There is a distinct difference between expressing a personal opinion and making an unreasonable demand. – Features Editor]

F*Ed ~ My apologies if I have offended as that was not my intention. I could express these opinions elsewhere but what good would that do if David couldn’t read them?

I threw out what the majority was thinking and what some were saying to try and help sway any future decision that was on the fence as it were.

My unfortunate choice of the words “David should” was wrong and for that I have apologized.

  40. David, come play Echoes in Brazil!!!!! (sorry, couldn´t resist)

May you all have a great weekend!

    Adriano

  41. Do we have a chance to see this ‘live at Abbey Road’ (and echoes, the blue etc.) as a bonus in the future DVD of David’s tour?

    It could be very good!

  42. [There is a distinct difference between expressing a personal opinion and making an unreasonable demand. – Features Editor]

Overhead, the albatross of shame just pooped on my head…

  43. Hi Fed, everyone

On the topic of David getting the recognition as a solo artist, I had listened to PULSE the last few days and now realize how much more OAI is David in his best element compared with PF stuff.

I am so glad that David is getting the recognition he deserves. Even though David put so much into PF, with and without Roger, he didn’t make it a point to grab the limelight like he could have. After so many years of being in Roger’s shadow, and buried in the PF machine, it’s so nice to see David in his own element, with the honestly earned and overdue recognition he deserves. All with keeping that humbleness and class that is uniquely David.

So Echoes isn’t in Abbey Road- Neither is Brick 2 and Money and Shine On. I can live quite well with that.

    Have a good weekend, all.

    Mike

  44. Wow,

This caused quite a stir didn’t it???

Well I am just glad we get to see it here in the States.

Won’t be in chat today, My new job is keeping me busy. Hope you all have a great weekend.

    Renee B.
    Fontana, Ca USA

  45. I didn’t ever think Echoes would be included as it was reported as an impromptu jam. I’m just glad we got Astronomy Domine on the bonus DVD.

    Have a good weekend everyone.

  46. hi fed.

there are a lot of excellent floyd fansites out there. i hope that you dont think we webmasters are all crazy freaks who just are interested in Floyd Reunion Rumours.

There was not a lot Information about Floyd from 1996 to 2005 available, no http://www.davidgilmour.com, no Blog. There was not a lot official infos at all.

Yes i will mention that echoes will not be shown on my fansite.

  50. It comes as no surprise that Echoes will not be broadcast, but it would be nice if footage surfaces sometime, somewhere. The website for the show lists it among the songs that were recorded, suggesting that it does exist. We can hope can’t we?

Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing these shows – other artists plus David Gilmour. Glad to hear it will be shown in the US so I can enjoy it in better quality than a web stream. 🙂

  51. ciao FED and Bloggers,

first of all congratulations to Simon.

FED, could you tell to the italian fans if will be possible to see in Italy the Live from Abbey Road?

Thanks and good weekend to all.

[Sorry, Claudio. As yet, there are no plans to broadcast the series in any other countries. If that changes, we’ll let you know. – Features Editor]

  52. I understand about Echoes. I understand about David wanting to show himself as a solo artist rather then always being attached to the Floyd. Which brings me to agree with Blake (and that NEVER happens 😉

I love everything David played on tour, but I was really hoping for some stuff from DG or AF. If David’s hope really was to show himself more as a solo artist, I would think, he would have done some of his other solo work. I think David just did what he wanted to do at the time. He has certainly earned that right.

Not looking for an argument, I’m just saying . .

Have a good weekend all. Thanks for another chat FEd.

    ~Erin

  53. [So, if you run a fansite, do feel free to lazily copy the following word-for-word (as you do so very often): ‘Echoes’ isn’t going to be included in David’s televised ‘Live from Abbey Road’ set.]

    Two comments.

    1. Your comment above is absolutely brilliant. Possibly worthy of knighthood.

    2. I kinda stopped reading the posts in this entry after the third post that voiced their displeasure that Echoes was not part of the broadcast (of course you did ask for it by naming the entry No ‘Echoes’).

I fully understand why but I guess it is something that David has to live with as well. That is the legacy of his work with PF. But I do find it somewhat inexcusable the griping everyone makes (or at least many make).

I think David and the management have been doing a fine job in giving to us (of course our Latin American & Australian friends may have a gripe they can make about the tour stops – surprised that we don’t also hear from Japan).

And I presume that Echoes will be part of the upcoming DVD release (afterall, David needs to sell the DVDs and should be allowed to profiteer from his work).

Bottom line is that no matter how disappointed you may be that Echoes is not part of the broadcast it really doesn’t matter.

Think of it this way: David is the daddy and all of you are his children. Respect the decision that daddy has made and when you grow up and have your own family (read band) then you can have a say in what to do. Until then, “stand still laddie and eat your pudding.” (Sorry to all you purists, I used a little poetic license in rearranging the sentences.)

    Thanks.

    Andrew

[So that’s three people who ‘got’ the remark about fansites. Thanks, Andrew. – Features Editor]

  54. “no echoes” again

I think the main disappointment in not hearing it at least for me is that it shows a “fun” side of the band we normally don’t see. Most concerts by anyone vary little from city to city with even the same in-between song banter. Very little of the personalities come out and nothing is usually spontaneous. This is a general observation not directed at David specifically. Perhaps others were feeling the same way about echoes.

    Cheers, Howard

  55. [Sorry fed off topic but i just wanted to let anyone who wanted to know that my baby has arrived all is well 7 pound 1 – Posted by: simonemery at January 19, 2007 05:38 PM]

That is wonderful news, Simon. There is nothing better than parenthood. What is his name?

Cherish every moment, babies are not babies for long.

  56. Congrats Simon and ? And the boy, what’s his name? LOL.

In retrospect, whatever David decides is fine by me. I’ve had a blast going on 2 yrs. now with this site. Imagine, trying to find any info in my days, waiting 3-4 yrs. for any tidbits. They didn’t need media, they had true fans riding the wave all along.

    Nice comment LG, impressive indeed.

  57. I wish I could muster enough energy to have as sharp an opinion as everyone else here.

I love Echoes. I can put on Meddle any time, and listen to it.

  58. Well, I spent 35 years wondering if I would ever see Echoes performed live, and last year I finally did. I will probably own a DVD someday, with a live version from that tour to watch over and over again. I can also go back to the Pompeii film as well……I really don’t think there should be a problem.

Stay on m’Fed…..they will understand David has a life outside of Pink Floyd someday.

  59. [For those who have not already got it (and I guess not many) can I avert your attention to the Pompeii DVD. The most awesome version of Echoes I have ever heard/seen. – Pete]

Hey Pete, I am with you on that one. Live at Pompeii is incredible, most enjoyable with a puff and a cold beer, or in your case a warm beer.

    George.

  60. Hi FEd,

Even though I am a tad sad about “Echoes” I do agree with you.

Do you remember Rick Nelson’s song “Garden Party”? (“If memories are all I sang, I’d rather drive a truck”)

David Gilmour has been far too underrated as a solo performer. Let’s everyone give him his due!
He is such a superb artist.

    Penny

  61. YOU MUST BE KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s not fair man!!! The world is waiting to see that song how can you do that???

    I’m terribly sad….

  62. Hello FED and guys.

Ok, ok, I too understand the reason why Echoes is not gonna be broadcast in that situation even though I’m extremely disappointed.

Do you think there might be a chance to have that version as a bonus track in the forthcoming DVD?

    Thanks

    Ciao
    Matteo

  63. While marvelling at the performance of Take a Breath at the RAH and the rest of that amazing DVD, I was struck by a thought – yes, David’s guitaring is awesome to the point of leaving you speechless, but so is his song writing. It takes more than just guitaring to capture our hearts.

I reckon he’s also the greatest song writer on the planet. And what about his vocals and his harmonies? My goodness, he’s much more than simply the best guitarist on the planet! Let’s not sell him short eh.

  64. Here’s how I look at it:

David was at Abbey Road to promote/celebrate his album, and with only three tracks permitted the choices were limited to those that would achieve that end.

David is an artist. He owes us absolutely nothing. Those who say he should give us this or do that, really are being disrespectful of him. He is playing the music that he wants to play, and we are lucky that he is choosing to share it with us.

Yes, I would have liked to hear this track because it sounds like fun. But I do not feel disappointed. David never promised to release it, and he owes us nothing.

David does not seem to be the kind of artist who releases the scraps from his cutting room floor. Would we want him to be that kind of artist? If he chooses not to release Acoustic Echoes, for whatever reason, then we need to respect that decision and move on.

And what is the value in getting angry over this? If you want something to really get angry about, read about Darfur. See Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth.” Go to Guatemala. David not releasing a track that was never meant to be released? Not even worth mentioning.

Essentially, what I am saying is that if David feels this track is worthy of his reputation and meets his high standards, he will find a way to get it out there. If he does not want to release it, who are we to tell him that he HAS to reconsider? We need to respect his choices and move on with our lives.

[Very well said, Dan. Thanks for that. – Features Editor]

  65. Off topic, hope all of you out there in Europe are safe and sound from the terrible storm that is currently hitting Europe. I heard bits and pieces about the storm and the damages incurred because of that. I can relay to this since we have to deal with Hurricane every year from May to end of November in South Florida.

Best regards and wish all is well.

    Later…

  66. Just spun the 7in version of AL on the turntable and it sounds awesome. Vinyl is still better than CD.

    Cheers, Howard

  67. I’ve had a chance to listen to the AL contestants. George and Mike, kudos on your versions. It’s interesting to hear different facets of the song.

    Good Luck All.

  68. Goooooooooo FED! I am following online the match! Liverpool 2 Chelsea 0!

(The next big victim will be Barcelona)!

    Claudio.

    [Thanks, mate. – Features Editor]

  69. [I understand about Echoes. I understand about David wanting to show himself as a solo artist rather then always being attached to the Floyd. Which brings me to agree with Blake (and that NEVER happens ;)]

Never???? that doesn’t speak very highly of you Erin.

  70. One of my mates was hit by an IED in Iraq 2 days ago. He has a number of serious injuries and is in a critical condition.

The world is not worthy of such men.

[I’m very sorry to hear that, George. – Features Editor]

  71. I sense there will be much singing in the chat on Monday… 😀

Don’t party too hard, FEd. 🙂

    ‘Nix.

  72. [So that’s three people who ‘got’ the remark about fansites. Thanks, Andrew. – Features Editor]

    As you’re counting F’ed, make that 4.

As I have been quick to twist the knife on occasion, I would like to selfishly congratulate you and yours on a splendid result. Any mixed feelings ?

The “Sage of Govern” was saying how he knew lots of Liverpool fans who are rooting for United over Chelsea.

    a) Do you suspect he’s fibbing?
    b) Is it true in your case ?
    c) Are you deluded into thinking Liverpool can catch both ?

[Tim, to be honest, this has troubled me all weekend. On Friday, I thought I’d have to swallow my pride and hope for a United win just to keep Arsenal a few points behind Liverpool. That didn’t sit well on my conscience. Hoping for an Arsenal defeat is easy enough, considering recent events (my therapist is confident that the nightmares will stop if I can just see that it is possible not to concede soft goals each time Arsenal attack), but I would rather eat worms than wish United anything more than a goalless draw with several injuries to their key players. Yet after that sweet win over Chelsea, remembering that both United and Arsenal still have to visit Anfield (and forcing myself to forget that Arsenal have been there quite a lot recently and rather enjoyed themselves), I realised that an Arsenal win would be best. For the sake of the Premiership, it’s good that the gap at the top has been closed. It helps prove that it’s the best league in the world. Sadly, I don’t think Liverpool can win the league, but I do think second place is there for the taking (Arsenal’s taking, too). It’s a funny old game and it does funny things to you, doesn’t it? – Features Editor]

  73. Hey Fed,

I just heard that you team won. Congrats!! It’s always nice when you go see your team live and they win.

    Hope it made your weekend

    ~Erin

[Bless you. I had a fantastic weekend, thanks. Hope you did, too. – Features Editor]

  74. to you all moaning about echoes

david gilmour has more money than the isle of man, a gorgeous wife, he’s not getting any younger but he still comes along, tours with a new album, releases a dvd, abbey road, plays all the pink floyd you can shake a stick at when he is supposed to be promoting his solo album. it is true what they say.

i say go and annoy roger waters but he would tell you all where to go.

  75. hi

It’s very ok for the NO Echoes, but is it possible to make a new webcast on AOL or somewhere else, and show all the tracks of the Abbey Road session ? I remember the OAL session was a real great thing, even before the mini dvd.

  76. I think it is very understandable why Echoes has not been included in this show, as F’ED has explained that each artist is only given 3 songs. So enough with the guff! I will just pray that Echoes is included in the upcoming RAH DVD.

I saw the show live in Toronto, and when those first few notes hit, my friends and I looked at each other with grins wider than the Atlantic.

I’ve followed the blog here at davidgilmour.com, but this is my first post. Does anyone know if there’s any chance “Wearing the Inside Out” could be on the DVD? I know he only played it in a few cities, so I wasn’t sure if it was one that had been recorded or not.

Thanks, and keep up the great work here at davidgilmour.com!

  77. I have no idea what’s going on…is the concert dvd going to have any Floyd songs on it or just On An Island stuff?

[The tour DVD seeks to accurately represent the tour, which included Pink Floyd songs. So yes, there will be Pink Floyd songs included on the DVD. The point I’m so bored of trying to put across to certain people is that the tour, and everything else we enjoyed courtesy of David in 2006, was an off-shoot of ‘On An Island’. Had David wanted to play nothing but Pink Floyd songs, he’d have done so. He didn’t, so let’s all respect that – and the album that continues to give us so much enjoyment. – Features Editor]

  78. I’m too saddened that we’re not going to see Echoes.

I don’t blame anyone for this. I understand that it was an impromptu thing. I would love to see Jon Carin playing the little bit of Astronomy Domine on that old keyboard at the back of the room too. That did make me chuckle! Everything played that day at Abbey Road was excellent … of course I want to see it all again. I’m greedy!

However, I hope and pray that it all might be included on a DVD in the future.

I guess if us fans could choose a signature tune, it would be Echoes (although I would have died and gone to heaven if they’d played SOYCD parts 6 to 9 … what more could you ask for than David’s lapsteel and Richard’s jazzy synths harmonizing together *winks*).

Echoes showcases David and Richard at their most brilliant. Their coming together as one musically is something I’ve never seen rivalled by any other musicians. They bounce off each other perfectly and it’s clear that they know each other so well. In songs such as Echoes and Cluster One, it’s almost as if their instruments are talking to each other.

It was an honour and privilege to see and hear Echoes played three times at the Royal Albert Hall and again at Abbey Road. At the RAH, you could clearly see and hear that Richard was in his element (and particularly when he and David jam a bit in the early parts – that’s the magical bit for me). When the lasers shone over David’s head during the “bird cry” sppoky parts near the end … my hair stood on end and I had goosebumps. It was the most utterly amazing experience! Of course, I want to relive it!

    Thank you!

  79. Totally off topic but if david or polly reads this, then on behalf of millions of fans worldwide please get a PF tour up and running. You are and always will be the best band on the planet and simply awsome live. So come on guys do the right thing.

[On behalf of millions of other (reasonable) fans who aren’t stuck in the past, do the right thing and f*ck off, Kev. You can waste all the time you like sending these pointless messages elsewhere, but don’t waste my time by sending them here. They’re most unwelcome. – Features Editor]

  80. Liverpool wins, Indy wins, and off to play Chicago in the Super Bowl. What a fantastic match tonight, should be a great finale.

Nerves of steel awaiting for the AL competition. Crossing fingers. Good Luck to all.

I saw Steve Irwin’s final show also tonight. Crickey, he was, and is still is amazing. To Terri and Bindi, and Bob? Keep the dream alive.

  81. [Overhead, the albatross of shame just pooped on my head…]

Matt, go easy on yourself, its no problem. Not nearly as bad as choosing a photo not taken by Polly & then saying it your fave photograph. I know how you feel, im sure you haven’t upset any one too much.

look forward to more of your posts,
    regards
    Graham

[Actually, I have to say that the seemingly demanding and ungrateful comments of fans who want nostalgia rather than new art are deemed far more offensive, Graham. – Features Editor]

  82. I like the way; I am learning about English football here, the guys I work with are very impressed with my knowledge of the teams etc.

They all have teams they support, I’ve joined in and picked a team, I’ve decided on Arsenal.

    Ta, Karen.

  83. [Actually, I have to say that the seemingly demanding and ungrateful comments of fans who want nostalgia rather than new art are deemed far more offensive, Graham. – Features Editor]

If this is the case & IF David feels the same way why did he sanction the release of the P.U.L.S.E DVD? I know i relished & enjoyed watching the concert I also appreciate David’s new work, it does not now deem the old stuff to be unlistenable or irrelavant does it?.

Some of us fans dehumanise our idols, just stand in the terraces on any football ground hear the abuse when a pass goes astray, then the same fan will will puch his fist in the air with delight when the same player scores a minute later. Any one in the public eye has the unfortunate task of putting up with this. Musicians/Politician/sportsmen/women/Jade Goody (ive gone too far now, sorry)

Im sure David will never be swayed from what he wants to do. On the other hand his fans have this site to air there views, maybe being demanding & ungrateful of David is not the best way to achieve what they want what else can they do.

You seem a bit grouchy (not Crouchy) this morning, Fed, i dread to think how you would be if Liverpool lost!

[I’m not at all grouchy, Graham. I’m simply doing my job in trying to set people straight and, as a fan, I’m giving ‘On An Island’ the respect I feel it deserves. ‘P.U.L.S.E’ is a Pink Floyd release and, therefore, is a different issue entirely. – Features Editor]

  84. I listened for the millionth time to on an island today, what a magnificent album it still is.

This time i was looking through the booklet and i saw 2 names as dedication (?) to castellorizon, being Michael and Tony, here ever after.

I assume Michael is Michael Kamen? any idea which Tony is referred to?

[That would be Pink Floyd agent, Tony Howard. – Features Editor]

Thanks, Fed, my thoughts exactly, very well put indeed!! Go, Fed!!

  86. A contribution from some well known musician to the ongoing Echoes-debate.

I think that speaks for itself…

“As you look around this room tonight
Settle in your seat and dim the lights
Do you want my blood, do you want my tears
    What do you want
What do you want from me

Should I sing until I can’t sing any more
Play these strings until my fingers are raw
    You’re so hard to please
What do you want from me

Do you think that I know something you don’t know
What do you want from me
If I don’t promise you the answers would you go
What do you want from me
Should I stand out in the rain
Do you want me to make a daisy chain for you
I’m not the one you need
What do you want from me

You can have anything you want
You can drift, you can dream, even walk on water
    Anything you want

You can own everything you see
Sell your soul for complete control
Is that really what you need

You can lose yourself this night
See inside there is nothing to hide
    Turn and face the light

What do you want from me”

  87. Happy Monday,

Apologies to everyone who was on Fridays chat. I had to leave quick as my lift had turned up.

Plus Pheonix, thanks for the help. I can now move rooms. Aint no stopping me now !

    Pete – Coventry

PS: Fed – forgetting the footy but surely the highlight of your weekend was passing Cov. Whatever journey you took, I guess, must have took you close.

  88. i cant believe this echoes business is still going on.they didnt play it..they kinda jammed over it and in a spontaneous manner for a few minutes. this abbey road is a serious release. bands f*ck around from time to time and that is all it was according to who was there. again, they didnt play it!!! jeez!

– Features Editor]

    saw that coming!

  89. [Actually, I have to say that the seemingly demanding and ungrateful comments of fans who want nostalgia rather than new art are deemed far more offensive, Graham. – Features Editor]

A new version of Echoes would be considered nostalgia?

[If, like me (and any dictionary), you define “nostalgia” as a longing for things of the past, then yes. On a TV programme intended as a means for David to perform his new songs, an incomplete jam of a 30-odd year-old Pink Floyd song would be out-of-place, never mind nostalgic. – Features Editor]

  90. You would think by now some people would drop that crap about david getting floyd back together! Kevin get a life, move on.You cant live in the past.

Sorry if i was so blunt, but its never going to happen.Just be thankful you have this website to keep up with what new projects david has, I am.

  91. My dear irregulars…

It’s sad we don’t get the chance to see Echoes, however; I do understand David’s decision. I would certainly think he’s looking to provide us with the best of his performances and probably Echoes, due to its improvisation nature according to what I’ve been able to read, was not what David would want us to listen.

I would think we should all be happy with what David has given us throughout the last year and that we should still be looking forward for OAI’s DVD.

It’s a pleasure to say hi to everyone!

    How’s everything doing Fed?!

    Shine on you crazy bloggers!

  92. Karen you Beaut!

what an excellent choice of football team you have become a gooner (an Arsenal supporter) Arsenal’s nick name is the Gunners. Also David supports them too which i suspect is your real reason for you supporting a great team.

    Sorry Fed

  93. F*Ed, I can appreciate your delicate position but not your anger. We are all just fans voicing our opinions. It’s a bit too “Emperor’s New Clothes”-ish here at times. If your opinion doesn’t fall within the strictly enforced guidelines of the management then you are considered an outcast.

David’s new work will never compare with the classic Floyd material just as any artist newer material can never compete with their “salad days” material. Its not a bad thing to like one over another just because it’s simply a better song.

I think that the public (with the exception of a few meatheads) have been very patient and respectful to David regarding the newer material. That being said and done I don’t think its right to make someone feel “wrong” for choosing to want to hear “Short and Sweet” over “Take a Breath” because they like that song better. In my opinion it has very little to do with nostalgia and more to do with just fullfilling ones taste.

[I disagree completely, Matt (because the issue isn’t about liking one solo song over another), but your opinion is once again published for other people to make up their own minds. Hardly the thing to do if we really wanted to suppress all contrasting viewpoints, but still… – Features Editor]

There have been many other points made by others here in this blog episode today (to mention just a few for example: Dan, Penny, and other comment’s by Fed) which I would like to cut and paste here for heightened pointedness, but I will rest with this one above so as not to take up too much space.

I would like to extend and refine my point made earlier in this blog’s episode:

It is one that does not rest soley upon the issue of “old and new art”; nostalgic or visionary/revolutionary. It rests more upon whatever the artist-persona’s convictions/choices may be at hand, in his moment of decision. His art’s message may be a reminiscent/repeated one; or it may be an entirely new or even revolutionary one (to himself; or even possibly to civilization in general).

The ultimate point being: he must be true to his present set of convictions at hand, and he must be ready for the ensuing choice’s consequences, no matter they be beneficial or detrimental. He must be true to himself first.

I will presume that, concerning the Abbey Road show, Mr. Gilmour & Co. was free (within legal rights) to contractually choose whatever pieces he deemed desireable for whatever convictions. There are other artists on the Abbey Road Show who deemed fitting to present older reminiscent pieces from their “portfolio”. Fine. Not a sin, if that artist felt it true to his convictions to repeat something from the past (for whatever reasons).

Society needs to LET artists move forward with their convictions…..if they feel society needs a repeat listen/reminder of a work’s ‘message’, fine. If they feel convicted unto a new vision/inspiration, then society needs to LET that visionary speak it aright and true, because it’s evidently ‘Time’ to birth it and LET it mature into a life of its own to whatever degree.

Bottomline: The artist must choose; firstly and fore mostly according to his inner voice of convictions at hand. He MUST take himself into full consideration and into account fully through unto the end where his consequences lie waiting. And whether society is aware or not, in the long run it needs that artist’s utmost self-honesty, not his mediocrity/self-compromise.

    May Heaven help him.

  95. david, again i want to apologise for some of these selfish comments.

ffs, some of you really need to grow up.

  96. [I disagree completely ~ Matt,]

This could be on my tombstone, F*Ed. 🙂

Thanks for hearing and airing me out.

  97. I was going to stay out of this, but given my screen name, I guess I’m obligated.

I understand completely why Echoes would not be included in the BBC broadcast. I think perhaps the disappointment stems from the BCC site that listed David’s set and included Echoes. Many may have misinterpreted the setlist as the songs that would be broadcast. In no way would I recommend dropping any of the OAI songs for Echoes on the broadcast.

I would very much like to hear the acoustic Echoes. I understand that producing another video track for the RAH DVD may be overly timeconsuming. Perhaps the audio could be made available as a ‘B side’ download the next time David has a single to release?

I do understand the dismay many have expressed here. Echoes has been my favorite song since I first heard it at the age of 13. The spontaneity and acoustic nature of Abbey Road Echoes make it historically significant. I agree that David’s focus should be on his new music, but I also believe that it would be a shame for such a treasure as this to be lost forever.

That being said, I count myself as extremely fortunate to have seen David play Echoes live this year. Having the forthcoming RAH dvd to document the tour makes this year exciting. A release of any kind of the Abbey Road Echoes would be icing on an already large and delicious cake.

  98. LG,

Here is hoping that yours is the last word on this topic. It certainly is closest to the truth.

    Regards,
    Michael

  99. If David doesn’t want to do something, what f**king business is it of ours? Just be thankful for what you get. There is a full blown RAH DVD coming out soon so how about chatting about that instead of griping about not getting to listen to David taking a leak in his bathroom?

  100. F’ed,

On the basis that almost any topic is better than the thoroughly dead Echoes horse that continues to be flogged mercilessly …

Well I was expecting something a bit more pointed from you re. the weekend’s football – so thanks for an honest and balanced take on things.

I can tell you there are a few Liverpool fans in our office who have not given up hope yet at all …

For me, a pleasant afternoon decorating was punctuated only by a solitary and heart- felt “Arse!” as that last one went in….

[It was a shock, wasn’t it? – Features Editor]

  101. Alright Fed. No Acoustic Echoes and I’ve already said that it’s ok even though I was just asking (without reply) if we can hope to think about having a chance to listen at it someday… Even “Sorry, we don’t know…” would be appreciated. Thanks.

I agree with Dan when he says that David owes us nothing, but let me tell you this: I think David and Pink Floyd (like any other artist) must thank their own music skills and capacity if they are in that position; but in the same time I think they should be thankful to their fans who share their works and make them rich, famous, etc, etc…

I’m not saying that he “must” release that song somehow. Not at all. I’m just saying that maybe he may think to take in consideration to release that song someday just because his fans are asking so.

    Cheers.

    Matteo

  102. [There is a full blown RAH DVD coming out soon so how about chatting about that]

Yeah, Echoes! *sorry, that just slipped*

  103. Hello everyone. Im Heather, Im 15 years old. My mommy is Clarice, she’s a regular poster on here on she kinda..brought me to it. I love Pink Floyd and David Gilmour’s music. So I decided to join in…Nice to meet everyone!

    Keep it up Heather!!!!!

OK. Take note. If there is a plan to do another competion at the end of 2007 like we did at the end of 2006. This comment from FE’d needs to be among the finalists for some category. Of course, let’s hope this blog survives another year.

    Thanks.

    Andrew

  110. It’s by far the nicest and the most positive post of the day, Heather ! Thank you…

    Michèle

  111. Why wait till the end of the year, i would post my prize to Fed tonight.

Brilliant response! makes for great reading.

  112. Welcome, Heather! We’re not as scary as your mom says we are!

Okay, maybe I am, but I can’t speak for the others. 😀

    ‘Nix.

  113. Heather, welcome!

Bloggers: Don´t you think everything that should be said about Echoes being/not being broadcasted has been said?

Maybe I´m wrong here, and FEd, if you wish, you just delete it all, but it´s so simple:

    – They played a number, incomplete, an improvisation.
    – The show is aimed to broadcast only 3 songs.
    – The show is about David’s new and solo album.
    – They´ll broadcast 3 songs from David’s solo album.

    That´s all.

May you all have a good week.

  114. Welcome, Heather. Nice to know that young people listen to something other than Jay-Z and 50 Cent (that’s all I ever hear about from my students).

David Gilmour may be in his 60s now, and Floyd’s best work may be thirty-plus years behind them, but good music is timeless. You are smart enough not to shun things simply for preceeding your generation.

God bless you, and good luck.

  115. Thanks for the welcomes, Everyone =]

I look forward to posting with everyone and I’ll most likely be online — a lot. Lol.

  116. if I had the choice of ONE new David song, or an album of old songs performed years ago… I know I’d choose the former, everytime.

  117. Congratulations Simon, and welcome to Heather!

After reading through the posts, I`ve decided that I don`t care about the accoustic `Echoes` as I have the song on `Meddle` and `live at pompeii` and I love both versions! plus I don`t ever want Fed to tell me to F.Off!

  118. Hi Heather and welcome!

Good to have a new blogger and very good to have a young one!

It’s always a big pleasure know young people are still able to recognize and love so high level of music! I am sure Clarice gave a big contribution to educate you in this good tastes!

I wish you to find here so many interesting arguments and so much fun as we have had in all these months. And don’t worry if we, older people, sometimes behave and stretch our hair like kids! We are naughty, but not bad, after all. But if we do, you can join Fed to reproach us!

Good luck and welcome again!hmmm… maybe, just to start, you could say us which are your favourite David and Pink Floyd’s songs? Come on! Tell us!

    L!

  119. Simon! Congratulations on the birth of your son! What a blessing.

Second….about ‘Echoes’….may I say ‘GOOD GRIEF!!!!!’… please get past this folks. You must learn to handle disappointments. Life sometimes holds many and this certainly won’t be your last. (sorry, hope I did not offend)

I’d be happy to just watch David BREATHE…much less play music and sing.

Frankly, much as I love his Pink Floyd music, On An Island is the one I always come back to. I think it is the most beautiful of his music.

Although I certainly understand the excitement, emotions, etc that all of his music causes. I can’t pick a favorite piece of any of it because I truly love it all.

    Lastly, welcome Heather.

    A good evening to all,
    jan

  120. Echoes shmecoes!…great song, but it’s not as if we haven’t heard it before.

I know seeing is something different, but from what I understand, the version in question is just an unrehearsed spur of the moment garage band type jam session and probably not refined enough for mass public release. As Angelo has noted..5 minutes tops..

If all of you complainers really wanted to experience it in all it’s full glory, then you should have bought tickets for last year’s concert tour..or wait for the DVD proper.

I’m happy for you F.E. that your boys came through. There is a full blown pic of the winning goal in one of today’s Toronto local newspapers and I thought of how good a time you must have had…and please watch your language..young adults in our midst..

Hello Heather..really glad to see you join us.The Fed will wash his mouth out with soap!..Just kidding,I’m sure you’ve heard worse and your Mom has briefed you properly about what goes on here.

  121. Matt: normally, I don’t like to disagree using a bloggers name, but I feel you are missing the point of an artist trying to grow and evolve.

If we all try to stiffle the artists change and growth how hard is that for the artist.

It is fine for you to enjoy the old music, but please don’t say alot of people are just being “patient and respectful to David regarding the newer material” along with your view “David’s work will never compare with the classis Floyd material.” Your view would certainly tell any artist that he can just hang it up now. His/her day is over. Do you have an age cut off as well? Is your opinion that nothing can get better?

Good thing that artist keep on creating and evolving. I would hate to think of things that we might miss if artists feel stiffled but views such as yours.

I am certainly glad that people like Helen Mirren are still given great roles as she continues to get better with age (just one example)

  122. I just received the Arnold Layne/Dark Globe CD and Globe is absolutely stunning and haunting.

Both tracks of Arnold are also hugely amusing, and I´m glad I could see both last year.

Thanks for that Mr. Gilmour, and God bless Syd.

By the way, I think EchoesBob’s post mirrors my own feelings perfectly.

    Cheers!

  123. [I can’t hold my tongue any longer!!!! This crap has me all up in knots!!!! – Posted by: Angelo Ortiz]

Oh No!!..has someome peeved you more than I have Angelo?..Agony, Despair and Depression over this has motivated me to toss out radioactive waste from my nuclear powered furnace into my regular garbage for a day, rather than send it to the recycling depot..How’s that?!!..

All kidding aside, I’ve enjoyed your anecdotes about your experience at Abbey Road, and if the complaining people would have paid more attention to your posts,it would have saved the Fed A.D.and D. for he would not have to read such stuff ..and plus..I’d still be way ahead..Lol

  124. I’d really like the lyrics (& the music without question) to TDB

there’s this guitar work that just makes me jump up everytime I hear it

I’d really like to post the lyrics to one of the floyd’s songs from ’72 but they were written by someone else

    quite apt now

it’s the guitaring that makes the song

  125. [although I would have died and gone to heaven if they’d played SOYCD parts 6 to 9 … what more could you ask for than David’s lapsteel and Richard’s jazzy synths harmonizing together *winks* – Sue_N]

I couldn’t agree more Sue! SOYCD 6-9 is the best! It was so great on the Meltdown DVD too. I was hoping David would play it on this tour, but it didn’t happen. So David, maybe next time eh?

Georg Kunz, regarding Echoes debate: David couldn’t have put it any better, could he?

Welcome Heather, it’s good to see teenagers can still appreciate good music. I was starting to worry.

I was disappointed I couldn’t make chat today, but a mother’s work is never done. Hope it went well, without problems for you, FEd.

[any topic is better than the thoroughly dead Echoes horse that continues to be flogged mercilessly … – Tim C]

Yes please, dear FEd, put up a new topic!

    ~Erin

  126. Hi FEd and Irregular friends!

I’ve been perusing the comments that have been accumulating since Friday and find myself feeling somewhat responsible for opening the floodgates that have you, FEd, up to your eyeballs in, ah, opinions.

On January 16 the news was that the Abbey Road sessions were going to be shown in the US which was fabulous news indeed. When I (and I assume others) clicked on the ‘Live From Abbey Road’ website, then went to David Gilmour as artist, I found the access to ‘Session Info.’ Under the heading ‘Songs Recorded’ it lists Echoes, Astronomy Domine and The Blue along with On An Island, Take A Breath and Smile which, as we all now know, are the only songs to be shown on that particular show.

We’ve all been very pleasantly surprised with the gift of Astronomy Domine being included on the special edition dvd and I don’t think anyone can complain about that. And I have a faint recollection that you had discussed earlier on which songs were to be included in the show.

My point here is that all of this discussion back and forth is really a waste of time (yours) and energy (everyone’s). It’s a shame that the ‘Live From Abbey Road’ website didn’t list the songs that were actually to be shown thereby side-stepping this entire argument!

Everyone who read about and kept up on the actual Abbey Road Studio event knew from the lucky special guests’ reviews (which I’ve just re-read to be clear on the matter) that Astronomy Domine had been performed, some acoustic Echoes, a little Stones’ Play With Fire, and even some Play That Funky Music White Boy! I’d really like to see and hear that by the way!

I can understand those who would really love to have Echoes included in this show, but when the tour dvd comes out we WILL have Echoes, right?? So that makes me happy. We’ve already been treated with Astronomy Domine, so that’s a good thing. And, finally, the show is ‘David Gilmour’ and he does have his newest material that he wants to showcase and share, so who in the hell are we to make demands of him?

In closing (and my eyes are just about to), I’d like to say that I wish I’d given a little more thought to the matter before I brought it up in my post, although I think this must have already been foreseen as being a possible point of contention.

Now, to the gentle sounds of ‘Then I Close My Eyes’, I bid you goodnight.

    Peace, Love and Understanding everyone!

  127. Even after reading all of this, I still love Echoes, and would love to have heard the acoustic. I am lucky to have heard it live, for my first time, this summer. As Bob pointed out, it was and is, significant.

I just can’t talk myself into feeling different about it..

    Melissa(*_*)

  128. So much still going on with the ping thing. Let’s hope the new RAH DVD gives all of us somethin to keep everyone happy.

To Paul B: Your rendition of Arnold Dominoes Layne is great. The vocals are spot on.

To Heather: Welcome Aboard, we don’t bite, just rant one way or another.

  129. Hi all and welcome Heather – it’s good to have you on board with us and I am glad you enjoy the music from both David Gilmour and Pink Floyd.

I finally finished reading all the comments after working for 7 days straight with almost 13 hours day … my stress level is very high as a result of long-hour work and the anguish I sensed in some of these comments didn’t help at all and I am really saddened by it.

My 2-cents, I would like to thank David Gilmour for continuing showering us with his beautiful music, his live sessions, with or without “Echoes” – I am forever grateful.

Congratulations Simon for your new addition to the family. A belated congrats to Geoff – for your new addition also.

  130. Ciao,

sometimes I stay aside of childish debates on this blog. It is quite sad to see people pour shit on each other as they have nothing better to do. I come here to relax…to see people saying something light but not stupid and what do I find? a “debate” about whether or not publish Another “new” version of Echoes and verbal violence out of that.

Everyone, get a life. Is everybody 12 years old here?? Now insult me.

Fed, you can use the language you want but you set a standard. You say f*ck? I say f*ck then!!! you can edit stuff….better than to say f*ck off to a Fan that spent his life spending money (what a bad word, hu?? who says that “artists” play to make money?? who is that mad man?) in PF and hopes in a dream. he is not the first and will not be the last. But I frankly laugh when you try to close up pink floyd out of the door…they get in from the window. Just edit those PF requests!!!!

sometimes I miss which is the spirit of this place….apart from promotion.

[Freedom of expression is a wonderful thing. It would be very easy for me to simply delete everything I disagree with, but what is the point in that? If you give an opinion, be prepared to take some criticism for it. Let David see what you have to say. I’m not covering up the fact that many fans are ungrateful, whiney, grasping little shits. It’s up to you, as the people who take the time to submit a view, to take responsibility for your words. I have supreme confidence in my own. The point is: if we could think before we ‘speak’, the world would be a better place. – Features Editor]

  131. [I disagree completely, Matt (because the issue isn’t about liking one solo song over another), but your opinion is once again published for other people to make up their own minds. Hardly the thing to do if we really wanted to suppress all contrasting viewpoints, but still… – Features Editor]

Actualy i agree with Matt, yes you do publish even the most vitriolic posts but i dont think Matts falls into that category,

i also agree that if one was to post a view that did not agree with the majority it would be posted but then ridiculed exactly “like the kings new clothes” as Matt says.

There is nothing wrong with opposing views or a bit of banter, how boring if we all sat & posted the same comments. im sure David has his favorite songs that he would prefer to play more than others. give & take …

[As above, whose fault is that? Who posts these messages? I have a job to do and, if a post is considered controversial or plainly incorrect, I merely re-address the balance with a comment. It’s not an open invite to debate the issue further. There’s certainly no need for ridicule. Yet the whole point of this is that many people can’t express an opinion without getting their knickers in a twist. Just as many people can’t read a few lines thoroughly, stay out of an issue that they have little to contribute to, or stop bellyaching long enough to pause to consider that, possibly, everything in life wasn’t laid out on a plate just for them to gobble up as fast as they can, without leaving a few paltry crumbs for the birds. The convenient excuse when some of you prove that you’re incapable of reason is that certain comments should never have been published in the first place. I have to ask, do you want a Big Brother society, or do you want to think more and say less? It’s a simple answer to my mind. The blog is made up of your words, after all. – Features Editor]

  132. Think about it. If artists never moved on to new things after a big hit, then The Who would never have done “Who’s Next” (following Tommy), The Beatles would never have done the “White Album” (after Sgt. Pepper), R.E.M. would have stopped after “Out Of Time,” and Floyd themselves would never have done “Wish You Were Here” (following Dark Side).

An artist has to move on to new things, and we are always blessed to have what comes next.

  133. Happy Tuesday,

Just got back from Branscome Beach. No more booty left from the shipwreck but I now have a Pocketful of Stones………..and some shells and some sand.

    Pete – Coventry

  134. I have to admit to secretly enjoying the *millions* of fans who are members of the “let’s post a question about the bleeding obvious” union.

It’s a guilty pleasure really but I also get quite a giggle from the more letter “E”s in the word “PLEEEEEEEEEEEAAAASSSSSSSE” as in reform PF/release the Abbey Road Echoes track/come round my house for tea* (*delete as applicable – not more than one option in any 24 hour period.)

It’s so clear to me now that if only we’d said “pleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaassssseeeeeee don’t split the atom” then Robert Oppenheimer would have stepped back from the abyss and our world could have been very different.

I hadn’t realised that changing history was so easy. I blame Neville Chamberlain for leaving two “E”s out of his appeasement plea to Hitler. If he’d said “pleeeeaaaaaaaaaaasssseeee don’t invade Poland” then everything would have been fine.

Anyhow – may I take this oppostunity to say “pleeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaassssssseeee” vote for me in a certain PF cover song competition which incredibly is still accepting votes when in fact it apparently closed yesterday! Go figure. Anyway, if I win I will be releasing my 37 minute version of Echoes recorded on spoons and Dyson vacuum cleaner for all of you completists out there.

(First one to post pleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaasssssssseeeeeeee don’t gets a Blog forfeit!)

Thanks for the entertainment Kev and co. You’re priceless.
