Anyone going to the Gibson?

14580004_blog.jpgIf you’re going to the concert at the Gibson Amphitheatre on Thursday 20 April – and if you’re a regular blog visitor (sorry, no first-time posters, please) – do let me know.

I know that many of you let me know yesterday, but this is different and you have to humour me.

Just write “Yes indeed, I shall be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Amphitheatre next week and I am looking forward to it tremendously!” and nothing else. It’s Easter, I’m supposed to be on holiday, so please keep it short and sweet if you want to keep me sweet.

And you will want to keep me sweet, believe me, because I’ve got a little surprise that I’d like to share with you.

Ask no questions, because there will be no answers. All will be revealed on Sunday.

And if you can guess what the surprise is, keep it to yourself or else you won’t be considered eligible. I do hold grudges, so don’t try me.

Remember, all I want to see is: “Yes indeed, I shall be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Amphitheatre next week and I am looking forward to it tremendously!”

Thanks.

  33. I would like to thank David, and the rest of the band for an unforgetable night in Chicago on Thursday. You have no idea what that meant to me. I would also like to wish David, Polly, the kids, the band, and FED a happy easter. Take some time to appreciate friends, family, and the good things in life. I know you all deserve a little break after all the hard work lately. I love you all.

This blog is corrupting me, because now you have turned me into a liar and I don’t even know why.. hehehe

  42. Dear Features Editor,

I am travelling all the way from a city in Mexico just to see David on April 19th. I’m a big fan of his and actually I’m impressed with his latest work OAI (BTW, in Mexico we HAD to wait 2 (TWO! can you believe it?) weeks to get David’s album in stores and actually be able to buy it).

As an everyday follower of the blog, which I am, I thought that probably you and your blog can help me with this huge issue I’m trying to solve. I got an extra ticket available for the Kodak Theatre’s concert. I don’t either want to put it on e-bay or give it back to Ticketmaster. I think that a real David’s fan should have the honour of going and having a great night in there. Therefore, I guess you can help me out with this one. Either you already have someone needing it or you can post a special meesage for the ticket. Please get back on me regarding this issue.

As a last favor, I’d love to get an autograph from David. Do you think there will be a chance to meet him backstage or somewhere before or after the concert?

And last but not least, please say thanks to Dave for his awesome music. I can’t wait until Wednesday to get on the plane and get to LA and finally be able to meet my favourite guitar player. It’s a dream come true to have the opportunity to see David live.

Well, time to say good bye and thanks for everything FED.

    Shine on guys!

[Hi Jorge. I’m afraid I can’t give out backstage passes, but you could be lucky if you find yourself in the right place at the right time. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you. How about if we let anyone who is interested in your spare ticket leave a message here for you, with their e-mail address, and you can e-mail them? That has worked in the past. Enjoy the Kodak concert and good luck to you in getting that autograph. – Features Editor]

  48. Hi all, Firstly Happy Easter,no unfortunately I wish I was though. But I’m Sure all you beautiful fans who are going will share with us who can’t get there what it was like (Thanx)Hey FED I noticed in one of David’s photo’s in the Gallery that he had swapped his ring on his other hand, (Is he and Polly ok or is it that maybe his ring was in the way of his guitaring)Bye 4 NOW I LUV U DAVID MWA

[Sorry to disappoint you, but David and Polly are just fine. Could the picture have been flipped? Would that make it appear as though David’s wearing his wedding ring on his right hand instead of his left? I’m feeling a bit dim today, so sorry if that made no sense whatsoever. (People familiar with Hendrix’s guitar playing style will get this one.)(Just guessing that it’s somewhere around an A. So please don’t curse me and give F.E. more work to do.

Don’t know if you are accepting captions for this one F.E. as your instructions may preclude so…feel free not to post. Can’t wait to find out what the surprise is though!

  78. Caption-

‘No siree, I shan’t be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Ampitheatre next week, or indeed anywhere else, because here in the UK I’m my wife’s at-home carer and I’m far too damn poor to even think about trying to buy tickets for live gigs, despite having Floyd/David’s music in my blood and rarely listening to music by anybody else….which I can at least enjoy tremendously.’

P.S. That’s not true. Happy Easter.

  83. Happy Easter everyone!

Looks like the tour is going great…keep it up fella’s!

I went to see the very enjoyable ‘Glastonbury – The Film’ last night and I would heartily recommend it to both those who have been to the music festival in the past and those who haven’t but like that ‘festival vibe’. There are various peformances shown from over the years including several from the early ‘hippy’ festivals. Surprisingly though the soundtrack features two songs from a band some of you from around this blog may have heard of. The two tracks were ‘Bike’ (although I actually missed this during the film and only saw it mentioned during the end credits) and ‘Set the controls’. Obviously there was no footage of these tracks being played at the festival because our ‘friends’ never performed there (well, Rog did in 2002 but he definitely didn’t perform those tracks). As far as I could tell these two tracks were the only ones on the film that were not from a festival performance (though I may well be proven wrong). Weird. Geeky too I suppose!

Anyway, have a good break those of you lucky enough to have one.

    Chris

  84. CONGRATULATION to all our friends who are going to receive David’s (or FEd) surprise! I’m a little envious, but I’m very happy for you! ENJOY!!! And let we know what this surprise will be!

To the other regular visitors to Fan Fare who shall not be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Ampitheatre…I hope our surprises into the chocolate eggs will be very beautiful! (Do you eat chocholate eggs in Easter?)

    HAVE A GREAT DAY!

    L!

[We certainly do in the UK, Lucia. – Features Editor]

  85. No indeed, I won’t be able to go see David Gilmour at the Gibson….

What’s the sweet surprise FeatEd..? Are you gonna show up distributing chocolate eggs to the audience?

    Happy Easter

[Dressed as a giant bunny? Maybe. – Features Editor]

  86. It appears that David moves his ring from one hand to the other. I’ve seen several photos were this looks to be the case. One photo showed a van with lettering on it so it couldn’t have been flipped.

On another topic, David, we’d love to see you and the gang in Atlanta this summer at The Fabulous Fox Theatre. (Actually, we’d love to see you anywhere….) Anyhow, Deborah graciously provided a link to a Fox photo on yesterday’s blog. I checked the schedule and it looks like there are plenty of open dates for a multi-date gig. (Is everyone thinking, “Dream on, crazy Becky!”? Well, see, I have to distract myself away from this Easter egg that the Gibson folks are gonna get.)

  87. Ha ha, Guy! You should be eligible too. Maybe you can get some sort of consolation prize…a DG beanie!

I read last night that David used to play the song “Ain’t No Sunshine” at soundchecks on the 1984 About Face tour. How moving it would be to hear that ringing out in an empty theatre.

    wow . . . . that’s just plain rubbing it in . . . . . . . !!! (although who wouldn’t ??!!)

  89. To Fed & All,

    Happy Easter!

Indeed, I shall be seeing David Gilmour at the Royal Albert Hall in late May and I am looking forward to it tremendously! but I have yet to receive my tickets.

[From whom did you order, Stephen? Let me know and I’ll see what we can do to help. – Features Editor]

  90. Happy Easter, everybody! Joyeuses Paques!

To you f.é. and your wife(si vous en avez une) and to your children (si vous en avez), ne mangez pas trop de chocolat, cela fait grossir!I am a little down because the show is already a souvenir…David est le meilleur guitariste au monde!

    Sylvie de montréal.

[No wife, no children, but plenty of chocolate for later. Happy Easter to you, too. – Features Editor]

  91. Although it’s probably wildly optimistic of me to expect some of you to read this (when you didn’t pay any attention to the bold text in the very first line, for goodness sake), I have to again stress that this ‘game’ is only open to regular posters. First-time posters will not be considered, sorry. I’m sorry to say that, as more and more replies come in, infrequent posters will no longer be considered either. Also, please don’t post the same cheery catchphrase using different aliases with different e-mail addresses. That’s just p*ssing me off, to be honest with you (it’s Easter, why are you making more work for me?), and seeing as selecting ‘winners’ is down to me, you really don’t want to p*ss me off. More on our little ‘game’ tonight (and that’s UK tonight). I thank you.

  92. Yes indeed, I shall be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Ampitheatre next week and I am looking forward to it tremendously!

    I really hate to lie

  93. Afraid I’ll have to let you down on this one, F’Ed.

Just had a long read going through all of the posts as we just got back from our ski holiday in Livigno, Italy.

Drove there overnight on April 7, got to our hotel at 07:30, all set for breakfast. As we went into the still quiet hotel, first thing I heard was music coming from the kitchen. Indeed, OAI. I thought that was quite a good welcome 🙂

Heard commercials for OAI all the time on the local radio, “Radio Millenium”.

    Best regards and Happy Easter,
    Ralph, back in Belgium

  94. Oh! Happy birthday FEd’s Grandad! Retail him the great greetings of all David Gilmour’s fans!

Uhmmm….no wife, no children, Grandad…HEY FRIENDS! A lot of information! Our FEd could be really young! Or his Grandad could be very old! How old is he? Dearest FEd, this time you said more than you did ’till this moment! I hope the surprise in your chocolate egg was more beautiful than mine!

    Italian greetings to your Grandad!

    Ciao

    L!

[Thank you, Lucia. – Features Editor]

  95. Unfortunately, I get to stay in beautiful, sunny Toronto.. Enjoy the show; from the piece about the theatre, it sounds quite spectacular.

  97. “Yes indeed, I shall be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Ampitheatre next week and I am looking forward to it tremendously!”…..

  98. No indeed, I shall not be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Ampitheatre next week and I have been saddened tremendously, ever since I saw him and his band play both nights at Massey Hall (the shows were incredible)

    Happy Easter to you ALL.

Oh by the way FED, I am having a problem attachimg my photos to my email. Will get those pictures I promised ASAP.

[No problem, Gerald. – Features Editor]

  99. ‘Yes, I would give my right arm…’ oops, sorry, wrong competition!(lol).

Of course I won’t be at the Gibson amphitheatre next week but bonne chance everybody!

Happy Easter et bon courage FEd!

  104. Yes indeed, I shall be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Ampitheatre next week and I am looking forward to it tremendously!

  105. Special Thanks to Guy Pratt at the Rosemont.. We all enjoyed itching our noses after a few enchanted bass notes. As far as your T-Shirt, I’m glad you enjoyed them @ Live8, and that you have a cool head about it!

  106. Dear F.Ed,

At the risk of being banned from posting on this site permanently and receiving nasty replies from a lot of the other posters, I have to say that your last post has upset me a little.

While I am not in the running for whatever the prize is at the LA show on Apr 20th, I am one of many who have found this site fairly recently and what I would consider to be an infrequent poster (I really don’t feel the need to comment every day on how much I love DG’s music, what it means to me or the tours, how I became a PF fan or anything else under the sun for that matter).

I’m sure that all the fans who know about this site have high hopes about seeing David on the 20th will probably be pretty disappointed to be informed via a post that they have no shot at winning whatever “IT” is, because they are new to the site or don’t post often enough.

I guess I just expected a little better and am disappointed in the direction that this went.

I’m sorry you had to work on Easter, but we all do things on our jobs that we don’t like. It goes with the territory.

Still a DG fan, just not sure I want to be told where I stand in the pecking order because there obviously is one here.

    Regards,
    Nisha

[Well, you certainly won’t be banned for that, and I hope no one posts a nasty reply. I’m sorry if you don’t approve of the way this blog is run, but the blog would be nothing without contributions from fans and, when we have something to give away, we like to show our appreciation to the fans who have made the blog what it is. It’s all very well finding out that we have something on offer and making an effort to post just to be in with a chance of winning (as has proved to be the case, yet again). Personally, I find that more offensive and would imagine that the majority of people reading feel the same. Still, it takes all sorts to make the world go around and I take your point. – Features Editor]

  107. yes inded I will be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Ampetheatre next week and I am looking forward to it tremendously.

    Dave in Ft. Wayne

  108. Guy’s post, hillarious! I cant say Ill be there, but I can always head down south from Toronto! Im excited for you guys Wish we had had a contest up here(the best part is I dont even know what the prize is, although I have a clue). But I still have Guys pick and Stevies drumstick!

  109. Just want to add, for your peace of mind FEd, I DID read your post!

[Thanks, Paul. The first-time posters aren’t reading it, though! – Features Editor]

  110. Sorry to repeat… but wondering if Bloggers are meeting somewhere before the Universal show?? (I thought this might be a more appropriate spot for the comment, seeing as it’s titled “Anyone Going To Gibson?”)…. The butterflies in my stomach are wreaking havoc as the show gets closer!! I’ll be thinking about you lucky folks in Oakland tonight!!! Counting down the days til the 20th….

  113. dear feature editors and fans and of course Mr. and Mrs. Gilmour i hope you are all having a wonderful holiday and Happy Easter to all. Feature editor i did what you asked of me and wrote what you said to write in an earlier blog and post. I do want to let people know that the truth is i am not really going that i am aware of. I wish i was. I had to add this in because one, “I am not good at games or LUCK” & secondly,” I had to tell the truth”. HAPPY EASTER TO EVERYONE AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

  114. Is it not disturbing that , even some of your Gilmourians see a chance to capatalize on the chance of a “free gift” by duplicating the “Gibson post”. It is truly a selfish state of affairs!

[Not that I know of, George. That’s news to me. – Features Editor]

Yes the famous Robin Williams attended the Radio City Music Hall show on 4-5-06

  128. For anyone in the Washington, DC area, I heard on the radio this morning that classic rock station 94.7 is giving away a trip to see Gilmour in London (they don’t say which day).

Fed, while you’re reading our posts, I’ll be studying for 2 exams and eagerly awaitng the surprise (Shouldn’t I be spending time with my family? Darn professors!) By the way, I think you should dress up as a bunny!

    See people at Luka’s!

Peace and have a GREAT SHOW tonight. My BEST EASTER EVER! Not bad for a Jewish guy!

    BigAl

  137. FEd,

Actually in the original post, you said regular visitors, not regular posters. Of course, what makes a regular poster in the first place? I imagine we’d all have to be a tad bit irregular to being posting in the first place, right? 😉

And on a random tangent, just posting again, I still have one extra ticket for sale for the KODAK THEATER show on Wednesday night (not the Gibson show.)

Email me at […] if you are interested.

[Well spotted, Evan. “Regular contributors” is a far better term. With respect, anyone can say that they read everyday, even if they don’t. When we had the Mermaid Theatre competition, people who had never posted a message before got tickets – and they haven’t posted a message here since. There has been one complaint about the Leno tickets being available to those who post often at the expense of those who have only posted a handful of times, but I think it’s fairer to all the people who contribute regularly – and therefore show loyalty to the site – that they get priority when we have something to give away. This is our way of showing our loyalty in return and, to be frank, I don’t care if anyone has a problem with that. – Features Editor]

  138. “Yes indeed, I shall be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Ampitheatre next week and I am looking forward to it tremendously!”

  139. “Although it’s probably wildly optimistic of me to expect some of you to read this (when you didn’t pay any attention to the bold text in the very first line, for goodness sake), I have to again stress that this ‘game’ is only open to regular posters. I thank you.”

…you know that wall you’re banging your head against? I’d give up if I were you – you’ll just end up with severe bruising! 😉

…and I should have listened to my own warning to you the other day – I feel decidely queezy having overdone it on the chocolate front but I’m sure you’ve been much more sensible….haven’t you F’Ed?

[Oh yes, I’ve been very good today. – Features Editor]

  140. Hi FEd, Band, fellow regular -and not so regular- bloggers,

“Yes indeed, I shall be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Ampitheatre next week and I am looking forward to it tremendously! But then again, I will be standing next to him…

    xx
    Guy

[Then you can’t play along, so there! – Features Editor]”

Guy, you just made my day. FEd, don’t be too hard on him. He’s a nice and friendly bass player who enjoys being on stage very much. And he’s probably just as curious to what new extra assignment you’ll be giving to him as we are 😉

Besides, when you fininally can go to bed he’s just starting up for the gig (9 hours time difference, isn’t it ?)

Unfortunately I won’t be there as I’m ‘trapped’ in Holland. On the other hand, we had a beautiful sunny Easter sunday and we had our second son baptised this morning, so I’m not complaining (neither did he 🙂

Anyway, after 2 days of travelling and hopefully enjoying some time off at the west coast you’ve settled in San Fransisco (remember the 1968 movie with Floyd music ?) for the 3-but-last gig across the Atlantic. Enjoy the shows you’l be playing and hopefully enjoy the captivated audience, absorbing your music (and dancing).

Are you dimmly aware of a certain surprise in the aaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrr…
    Piet

  141. No I won’t be but I saw both RCMH. God you lucky few are in for a treat!!!

Your killing me Fed, it’s Sunday already…

    WHAT’S THE SUPRISE????!!!!!

  142. No indeed, I shall not be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Ampitheatre next week, but if I was, I would be looking forward to it tremendously!

  143. Hello Everyone

I asked this the other day and perhaps missed any responses. I do try to read as many posts as I can each day.

Are folks planing on getting together prior to the Kodak and Gibson shows? I know there was some mention of the Pig & Whistle on the 19th is that still a go?

Looking forward to the LA shows!
    Happy Easter Everybody.

    Best
    John

[Well, there’s a get-together before the Gibson show for a select few, John… – Features Editor]

  144. I bought tickets for the RAH show from the box office and have not yet received tickets. Should I be worried?

    fantastic album by the way…

[No, I don’t think so. They were only sent out towards the end of last week – and you know what the postal service can be like when there’s a public holiday. Give it until the end of this week and, if you still haven’t received them, feel free to send me your full name and address and I can check with the Royal Albert Hall for you. – Features Editor]

  145. Yes indeed, I shall be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Ampitheatre next week and I am looking forward to it tremendously!

  146. Happy Easter to all you good people out there reading and contributing to the blog, and especially to the marvellous – neverseemingtosleeportakeabreakoradayoff
    andneverrunnigoutofgoodideasandcommentsfortheweirdestposts – Fedmaster!

Good luck to all you in the US, I hope there’s a beautiful surprise waiting for you on the 20th!

[Thanks for that, Georg! Happy Easter to you. – Features Editor]

  147. What’s the news….I can’t wait anymore…Ok…I can wait…but I am so excited…!!!

  148. Yes indeed, I shall be seeing David Gilmour at the Gibson Ampitheatre next week and I am looking forward to it tremendously! I will be flying out from Atlanta, Ga Wednesday morning to catch the gibson show on Wednesday and the Kodak show on Thursday.

  149. I have to disagree with Andrew and his discription of Roger Waters as a musician. Lyricist, yes, but musician, I think not. David Gilmour played bass on numerous recordings that Roger received awards for. I understood that Roger could not even tune his own guitar because he has a certain amount of tone deafness. His style of singing is for me painful and lacking any shading or soul. Wherease David and Rick are both musicians par excellance and David has one of the most beautiful and versitile voices. These are not just my words, but critics views.

I really do not want to be part of wasting this web site on arguments of who is best and here I am. It’s not really a case of who is best, but who you like.

My husband and I went to the Rosemont on April 13. It was the first time either of us had seen any member of The Floyd. No drugs or alcohol for us. I wanted to be 100 percent there. After all of the wonderful descriptions from all the bloggers I thought I would have a pretty good idea what to expect. But, It was as some have said ‘BEYOND EXPECTATIONS’. For all of you mentioning ages, I’m a few years older than David (yes, loved Linda argument about his age and how it is irrelevant…besides as we all know he is beyond gorgeous) and a new fan, but my husband has been a fan since the start. On An Island was even more beautiful live. I love that entire cd. My husband (who thought he knew all about Pink Floyd, is learning from me) It was so much fun to see the big smile on my husbands face while he watched and listened to this concert. In spite of some people, we had such great seats that we were able to ignore and enjoy. It was wonderful to see so many people nodding heads and taping feets in unison to the music. The musicians that David had with him were all superb. It was just wonderful to see Rick Wright and hear his superb keyboards and to hear him harmonize with David. The laser show was fantastic and beautiful.

I am so greatful for the chance to have seen these artists in concert. I hope that David will consider making more music for us to experience. I am looking forward to buying the dvd when it comes out and the Pulse dvd.

I wonder if someone can tell me one of the songs names from the second set. It was unfamiliar to me.

Again, I can’t wait to hear what this man does next.

Davids’ eloquent voice, expressive quitar, song creations and lyrics touch us all.

To Polly Samson, thank you for your lyrics and photos, and the inspiration and love you give to your husband and family. Clearly this has enhanced his life. Thank you for sharing him with us. I can’t wait to read your books.

  150. Hi fed & All,

Eclipse here just wondering about my last post if the photos were flipped wouldnt (oh never mind I’m confused too now, Well I hope you got your choc fix.) Fed I have put a site in for all who missed Davids interview (click my name) I hope this is ok,LUV U ALL MWA X

[That’s great, thanks. – Features Editor]

  151. Yes indeed, I shall be seeing Debbie Gibson at the Gilmour Ampitheatre next week and I am looking forward to it tremendously!

    Oops, wrong blog!

[Ah, the truth comes out! And I thought you had such good taste, too. – Features Editor]

  152. Hi Fed,

[From whom did you order, Stephen? Let me know and I’ll see what we can do to help. – Features Editor]

Thanks for responding. I purchased my tickets from David Gilmour at trinity street direct.

    Best Regards,
    Stephen

I don’t have a problem with what you are doing. All I’m suggesting is that you don’t lump one time contest responders with those who are truly interested in David’s music and what this site has to offer, without having something to say regularly.

Thank you Evan, for clarifying terminology. I think it sums up where I stand, nicely.

Thank you F.Ed and fellow bloggers, for letting me clarify my position. No more on this, I promise.

Enjoy the 20th and bring the house down on Leno !

  154. My wife and I are going to tomorrow nights show in Oakland on the 17th. We can not hardly believe the time has come for the show and are excited beyond belief. I was at the Oakland stop in 94 and went to two shows and it was the most amazing time of my life. I know that the show will no doubt be epic (on a smaller scale which is going to be incredible). I have waited soooooo long for this day to come, so has my wife who has never seen Gilmour (the man himself) in concert so this is going to be ever more special to me for her to enjoy this. Since I was 7 years old and first heard Dark side of the Moon I have been a Floyd and more so a Gilmour fan for ever. You Mr. Gilmour have inspired me in so many ways it is impossible to begin. I live on the Northern Cali coast and Your new album is so peaceful to listen to along the ocean watching the waves come crashing in on the bluffs. Anyway thank you for allowing me to express this on the site. I would love a reply but understand if there is none. Looking forward to the show and will reply after we get back…..

Thanks again and Shine on for ever and ever DG

  156. I don’t want to get too excited – in case I’m already too late, and not regular enough, but here goes with all the required info for 4 well behaved, well groomed, but “over the top” Gilmour lovers who all have tickets for 4/20 Gibson Amphitheatre…

I’m so ready for this show!! Hope your Easter & birthday party celebrations were wonderful!

  157. Yes I will be attending the Gibson show and I will be attending the Leno taping as well. But if I win the contest I will supply my tickets to deserving people (I know, I’m DQ’d already). Dave Hollingsed, my wife is from Ft Wayne (and as a result I’ve seen a few shows at Piere’s). Are you like Elmhurst High circa class of ’82?

  159. Does anyone know if Crosby and Nash are going to be at the Gibson (4/20) show? I hope so. I know they played Radio City but I wasn’t sure if that was just a one-time deal or if they are on the whole U.S. tour.

[That was for the New York shows only. – Features Editor]

  160. Well, let me be the first to report that David Gilmour’s stop in the Bay Area (Oakland’s Paramount Theatre) was greeted by one of the most well behaved crowds that I have ever witnessed at a rock concert..thank you San Francisco fans!

I’ve just had four hours sleep since the show, so a bit fuzzy still. Just when I thought that I had the show all figured out, (thanks to the many detailed posts here), he went and threw me a curve ball by opening (8:10 pm) with Breathe, Time, and Breathe Reprise. I guess he figured he wanted to get something out of the way and let the crowd scream and yell a bit before he politely asked us to sit down and relax and listen to his entire new album, (which we did obediently).

The new material sounded fine and muscular in the intimate setting of the Paramount Theatre. Unfortunately the sound was bit boomy and really took away from some of the pleasure of some of the more rocking songs of the evening. Only suggestion would have been to end the first set with “Take A Deep Breath”. It was so loud and hard sounding that the two quieter songs afterward seemed overlooked and out of place, even though they were in themselves enjoyable.

The 2nd half started with a altered version of Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Judging from the lack of comments throughout the blog on this one, I might assume that most everyone felt as I did, that this arrangement didn’t really work. I’m all for trying different things, when they improve a song or make it seem more intimate, all this arrangement did was to confuse the audience, it kept me from ever really getting into the song. Sorry David. Dick Parry did admirabley with his double sax solo.

I have to say I was terrified that I wouldn’t get to see “Wots..uh the deal,” but my fears were not realized. As soon as the first pluck of the acoustic guitar chord hit, I was in heaven, and so was the crowd. You would have thought that this was a hit song from a recent album rather than the “obscure” little tune from an album most people have never heard of.

Thank you again San Francisco fans, and David & Co. Although they rearranged the song a bit, this time I didn’t mind as it put the break at the end of the song where it could extend itself and climax nicely.

Next came Dominoes, which I have to say I don’t think really needs to be played in this setting. We all payed dearly to here DG and the band. If you wanted to tip your hat to Syd a little “Interstellar Overdrive” or “Astronomy Domine” would have done fine. No point in playing an unmelodic ditty that doesn’t speak to the genius or creativity that started the Pink Floyd (sorry Syd).

From there we went into “Coming Back To Life” and “High Hopes”, both from the Division Bell album. Both of these songs suffered from the bad acoustic experience that I was having with the bass guitar and kick drum,it was just to heavy at times to enjoy. Ordinary Pink Floyd stuff done well if not thrilling.

Oh yes, but then there was “Echoes”, a 23 minute tour de force. I last saw PF do this number back in 1975 on the WYWH tour complete with Dick Parry on sax. I must say that this version was equal to anything they’veever done with it. It showed just who these guys really are and the sound was unmistakable. Judging from the crowd reaction, I wasn’t the only one that appreciated this long overdue return to form. It made me ache for the days of my youth when PF was truly a creative force, a band on par with no other and when their shows were the stuff of legends. Thank you Richard Wright for making this possible, I am forever grateful. The lasers, the fog, the sound, I was in heaven. A tip of the hat to the drummer (sorry don’t know his name) who played echoes like he’d done it forever, including the one little triplet fill in the first verse that I was sure he’d miss, (he didn’t).

The enore of “Wish You Were Here” and “Comfortably NUmb”, was predictably over the top. While WYWH is a welcomed sonic diversion in it’s acoustic simplicity, Comfortably Numb delivered the knock out punch that David Gilmour and Company were capable of, and the crowd was ready for. I’ve never heard it sound better. Again how ironic that Richard Wright proved himself to be the best replacement for Roger on the vocal bits. I wish they would have figured this out long ago on the MLOR, and Division Bell tours. Again thank you Richard Wright.

All in all a great if uneven night, for anyone associated with the band and all the fans who still refuse to let go of a time and a place in our minds where David Gilmour’s guitar, voice and PF’s wonderful legacy lives on.

Enjoy the show, and yes, the DVD!

  161. In answer to W1P Question:

No I did not attend Elmhurst H.S. I grew up in a Chicago suburb and moved to L.A. where I saw all of PF tours since 1975. I love Fort Wayne though!

  162. *** IMPORTANT ***

This is a last-minute reminder to those of you who will be attending the Gibson Amphitheatre show on Thursday.

Many of the people who said they were going when I asked on Saturday (please see this blog entry) have yet to send in their addresses. You only have until Tuesday lunchtime (LA time) before the final list is confirmed, so do hurry if you want to go to the recording of David’s performance on ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’.

And to all blog regulars (again, that means no first-time posters) who are going to the Kodak show on the Wednesday and could attend the Leno recording without too much trouble, let us know your full names and addresses and those of up to three friends. If you can get the details in quickly enough (and to the 16 April blog entry entitled ‘Tonight Show with Jay Leno’), you can be on our back-up list should we have any spare tickets.

No first-time posters. Sorry, but you will not be considered no matter how often you claim to read the blog. Please read the following (16 April) entry very carefully for full terms and conditions before sending in your details.

    Thank you.

  163. I just need to know how to find a fan who didn’t get a ticket to this sold out show. I am a fan who bought two separate sets and is now stuck with one extra set since my wife and I both bought on the on-sale not knowing we each bought!

I have to sell two (without marking them up, mind you), so is this the kind of fan site which hooks people up who want to get tickets?

If not, sorry to post this. I was hoping someone who is a REAL fan would want to buy them. I am not making any profit – just selling two tickets.

[If anyone’s interested, leave a message (including e-mail), so that Gary can contact you. – Features Editor]

  164. I’m guessing that many of the people who said they’ll be at the Gibson on Thursday don’t want to see David live on ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’ after all, because they haven’t sent in their home addresses. That’s a shame, as there are still some tickets left, but not much time…

  165. I will disagree with Jan because to me critics mean nothing. I can care less what critics think. To me, all that matters is if I enjoy it and like. For the most part, critics are failed musicians in the music industry. And there are many musicians who gained incredible popularity without the support of critics such as Frank Zappa. Lyricist, composer, musician are all synonymous and at the end are all intertwined. Both contributed to the success of PF and you cannot deny that – end of story.

  166. Hi FEd, David, Polly, family, band members, friends and all…

Sorry I have been away for a week or so on business with no internet access of time to do so if I had.

It is taking some time to catch up on the blog but there is a ton of great stuff here.

Hi Tim Taylor!…I will be wearing my button (tonight).

Thanks to all for the smiles and the hope for a great show.
